 Editor's Note
STAR WARS, George Lucas's stunning sci-fi masterpiece, is arguably one of the most inventive and entertaining films ever made, garnering generations of loyal fans who are forever imprinted with the memory of its characters and dialogue. As the adventure begins, Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), an impulsive but goodhearted young man who lives on the dusty planet of Tatooine with his aunt and uncle, longs for the exciting life of a Rebel soldier. The Rebels, led by the headstrong Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher), are fighting against the evil Empire, which has set about destroying planets inhabited by innocent citizens with the Death Star, a fearsome planetlike craft commanded by Grand Moff Tarkin (Peter Cushing) and the eternally frightful Darth Vader (David Prowse, with the voice of James Earl Jones). When Luke's aunt and uncle are murdered by the Empire's imperial stormtroopers and he mysteriously finds a distress message from Princess Leia in one of his androids, R2-D2 (Kenny Baker), he must set out to find Obi-Wan Kenobi (Alec Guinness), a mysterious old hermit with incredible powers. On his journey, Luke is aided by the roguish, sarcastic mercenary Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and his towering furry sidekick Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew) as they run into a host of perilous situations while trying to rescue the princess--and the entire galaxy. Magnificently referencing everything from Akira Kurosawa's SEVEN SAMURAI and THE HIDDEN FORTRESS to THE WIZARD OF OZ to John Ford Westerns and Joseph Campbell philosophies, STAR WARS revolutionized the cinematic world with its epic storytelling and amazing special effects. In addition to film veterans Guinness and Cushing, the movie also features an unforgettable performance from the young Ford, who would, of course, go on to become one of the biggest stars of the silver screen. Even today, Lucas's astonishing film leaves viewers wanting to see it again and again.

One minute into it and it's, like, a no-brainer -- the thing is undeniably awesome, a visual splendor with scuffed-up intergalactic realism. That's the way audiences originally saw it, and the way most critics (except for a few eggheads who don't even like Disneyland) saw it, too...Star Wars'' looks so new in its oldness that it prompts a double Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford as Luke, Leia and Han Solo cope with the Death Star in ""Star Wars, Special Edition"" take." - Peter Stack Chicago Sun-Times 10 of 10 "The most fascinating single scene, for me, was the one set in the bizarre saloon on the planet Tatooine. As that incredible collection of extraterrestrial alcoholics and bug-eyed martini drinkers lined up at the bar, and as Lucas so slyly let them exhibit characteristics that were universally human, I found myself feeling a combination of admiration and delight. ""Star Wars"" had placed me in the presence of really magical movie invention: Here, all mixed together, were whimsy and fantasy, simple wonderment and quietly sophisticated storytelling." - Roger Ebert

1 of 1 customers found this review helpful. 5 of 5 Finally, the original version! Friday, December 07, 2007 Ian T. from Milwaukee, WI
This DVD has the original, unadulterated, authentic Star Wars movie as it was when it first came out in the theaters. No CGI, no stupid extra ring of fire when the Death Star blows up, no extra Cantina song--the movie is as it was when George Lucas first released it to the public. I don't know why he has so much contempt for the original movie that made him so successful, or why it took so long to release this original version on DVD, but it's here and I'm mighty glad I've got it.
They did screw around with the widescreen formatting for the original release DVD which may require you to zoom on a widescreen TV, but it's a minor inconvenience. Well worth it to show your kids that it is possible to make a great SciFi movie without CGI. I hear this is a limited release, so do get yours before they're gone. Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 You won't be disappointed or surprised Friday, October 06, 2006 A Viewer from Orland Park, IL
Well, there is no sense in telling you about the movie itself because if you don't know the movie at this point in time you should crawl back into bed and pull the covers over your head and stay there.
I will discuss the packaging and presentation, however. I saw the movie when it was first released in 1977 and thoroughly enjoyed it then and still enjoy it every time I see it. I guess this package gives you the definitive version(s) of the movie. Both the original and the upgraded/revised version.
I did not have any of the three original movies (episodes IV, V, and VI) on DVD and was waiting for a reason to buy them. This package was the reason I needed to finally buy them. You won't be disappointed or surprised, beacuse by this time you most likely have seen some version of the movie. Was this review helpful?
