As the adventure begins, Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), an impulsive but goodhearted young man who lives on the dusty planet of Tatooine with his aunt and uncle, longs for the exciting life of a Rebel soldier. Magnificently referencing everything from Akira Kurosawa's SEVEN SAMURAI and THE HIDDEN FORTRESS to THE WIZARD OF OZ to John Ford Westerns and Joseph Campbell philosophies, STAR WARS revolutionized the cinematic world with its epic storytelling and amazing special effects. This DVD has the original, unadulterated, authentic Star Wars movie as it was when it first came out in the theaters. No CGI, no stupid extra ring of fire when the Death Star blows up, no extra Cantina song--the movie is as it was when George Lucas first released it to the public. I don't know why he has so much contempt for the original movie that made him so successful, or why it took so long to release this original version on DVD, but it's here and I'm mighty glad I've got it.
They did screw around with the widescreen formatting for the original release DVD which may require you to zoom on a widescreen TV, but it's a minor inconvenience. Well worth it to show your kids that it is possible to make a great SciFi movie without CGI. I hear this is a limited release, so do get yours before they're gone. Was this review helpful?

didnt care for the enhanced version but this dvd package came with the original theater release which is now disc 1. Some will like the enhanced version especially those that didnt see the original but i prefer the original Was this review helpful?

Well, there is no sense in telling you about the movie itself because if you don't know the movie at this point in time you should crawl back into bed and pull the covers over your head and stay there.
I will discuss the packaging and presentation, however. I saw the movie when it was first released in 1977 and thoroughly enjoyed it then and still enjoy it every time I see it. I guess this package gives you the definitive version(s) of the movie. Both the original and the upgraded/revised version.
I did not have any of the three original movies (episodes IV, V, and VI) on DVD and was waiting for a reason to buy them. This package was the reason I needed to finally buy them. You won't be disappointed or surprised, beacuse by this time you most likely have seen some version of the movie. Was this review helpful?
