 Editor's Note
Nearly two decades after the cancellation of the original STAR TREK television series, creator Gene Roddenberry launched the first of what was to be four phenomenally successful spinoffs with STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION. Set in the 24th century (nearly 100 years after the stewardship of Captain Kirk), the series introduced an all-new cast of intergalactic travellers exploring the farthest reaches out of outer space on a mission to chart new planets and alien civilizations. Ship commander Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) anchored the crew of the Starship Enterprise-D with a sensitive reserve that marked a distinct contrast to his trigger-happy predecessor, whose role was assumed by the Kirk-like second-in-command, William Riker (Jonathan Frakes). Rounding out the cast were the Spock-like android, Data (Brent Spiner); blind officer, Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton); Klingon officer, Worf (Michael Dorn); ship doctor, Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden); her teenage son, Wesley (Wil Wheaton); and psychic psychiatrist, Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis). Considered one of the best STAR TREK spinoffs for its intelligent writing and superb sci-fi special effects, THE NEXT GENERATION lives on in cult fandom with this complete collection of episodes from the series' third season.

I'm not sure what planet the other review was from...
Season 3 was easily the best of the first 3 seasons for
the Next Generations. While there were some mediocre
episodes, like Who Watches the Watchers, Season 3 excelled
with perhaps the best 1-2 punch of the series run: The
season ending cliff hanger of the Best of Both Worlds, which
introduced us to the Borg in their full glory (beyond the teaser set earlier in the series) and of course Yesterday's
Enterprise. Even Tin Man was a noteworthy heartfelt episode
as the 3rd season brought the crew together in the form that
would see them through the remaining 4 seasons and the movies.
Along with season 4 and 5, these 3 seasons serve as the
foundation of the series and when it found its legs as the best
of the Star Trek variations. Grab it! Was this review helpful?

When I think of The Next Generation, not much from the third season really comes to mind as anything really spectacular. Sure, the stories are good overall, the acting is excellent, and the cinematography is not that bad. But nothing really special happened. Nothing really makes you stand up and take notice. The only real exception to this is the episode "Who Watches the Watchers?" Now there is an excellent story in every respect--the second-best Next Generation tale ever told. But there is really nothing else that stands out in your memory about this season. The stories are good. I like "The Enemy," "Yesterday's Enterprise," "Sins of the Father," and "Sarek." Their just not great like season two was. All that said though, this is one beautiful DVD package with the way the distributers have set it up, and the special features are fun to watch.
