Nearly two decades after the cancellation of the original STAR TREK television series, creator Gene Roddenberry launched the first of what was to be four phenomenally successful spinoffs with STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION. Set in the 24th century (nearly 100 years after the stewardship of Captain Kirk), the series introduced an all-new cast of intergalactic travellers exploring the farthest reaches out of outer space on a mission to chart new planets and alien civilizations. Ship commander Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) anchored the crew of the Starship Enterprise-D with a sensitive reserve that marked a distinct contrast to his trigger-happy predecessor, whose role was assumed by the Kirk-like second-in-command, William Riker (Jonathan Frakes). As all trek fans agree, the first season pales in comparison to later seasons. However, it is still a great start to what would become a great series. Cutting edge special effects for it's time, TNG Season 1 is a great, bitter-sweet reunion of many of the Trek characters we all grew to love. TNG reruns seldom show the early seasons, so owning this box set is advantageous. A great reminder, and lots of "oh yeah!" moments. Was this review helpful?

Yes,it is great to have the entire ST:TNG series released on DVD and to be able to collect them all at a relatively cheap price considering how long the series ran. And yes, this is the best television series ever made (with Dick Van Dyke being a very close #2). That being said, though, season one is not that great. Frankly, this show just started off slow and barely interesting. I'm sorry, but TNG just doesn't feel like TNG until Tasha dies, Worf becomes security chief, and Geordi becomes chief engineer. Some of the worst Star Trek episodes ever are in the begining of this season ("The Last Outpost" and "Justice" for example). Thankfully, the season does get much better as it goes along and eventually developes some really good stories (such as "Datalore," "Hide and Q," and "Conspiracy"--everyone's favorite from the first season). And season two is just plain great! You just have to get through some pretty cheesy storylines at the begining first. Was this review helpful?

Well finally the 2nd best series is on DVD. (Star Trek the Original series was #1)I just received the first season and pre ordered the second. I hope the subsequent seasons will come out as planned, every other month. That way it will take a year to collect them all. I love how all the episodes for each season come together as opposed to having to order them seperately ex. "Star Trek The Origial Series" DVD's. Plus you get 4 episodes per DVD as opposed to only 2 with the original series. The case they are stored in is very appealing and enhances the collection. The picture clarity and sound are of the best DVD quality. What I like the most is that now I can watch any episode whenever I want instead of staying up until all hours of the night to watch an episode bombarded with commercials. I hope in the future they will offer DS9 and Voyager as well. For those who did'nt like the first season, get the next ones! Was this review helpful?

I have been waiting years for this! I got it last week and have already watched the whole thing. I wish the second season would be available sooner, but I suppose it's good they are releasing them every other month... otherwise my bills wouldn't get paid!

I bought this set directly from Buy.Com for my husband, we received it yesterday 3/27/02. My husband has spent 2 hours watching it yesterday. I heard him laugh and say many things like "I don't remember this part." He is a Star Treker NG fan and until we received these dvd's it was a nightly thing on television (I am serious)He does not go to bed unless he is watching it and falls asleep to it. We call it therapy..lol. We are planning on buying the whole series. He says it is expensive, but I will continue suprising him even as broke as it may get us. To see him laugh the way he did last night and be fully entertained and relaxed the way he was last night was and is worth every penny of it. He deserves it. Was this review helpful?

As a huge fan of TNG, I am so excited about this collection!! Even for those who may not be a fan of the first season...this is still a must have!! I can hardly wait for the next six seasons to be released, hopefully we will not have to wait too long. If you haven't ordered your copy yet, you should go ahead and do it...you won't regret it! I'm a huge fan of TNG, but the first season was the worst.. in fact it caused me to NOT want to watch Star Trek though I did in hopes it would get better. Thank goodness they improved as the time went by. The acting and plots became more refined. If you want to see how it started this is definitely the set, but since I have.. I think I'll pass. Thanks for not putting 2 episodes per CD like you did TOS.
