The Allman Brothers Band were superior musicians who incorporated elements of country, jazz, and R&B into their playing, and displayed a remarkable penchant for group improvisation. The synthesis of these factors, delivered with a distinctive country-fried edge, is laid out on this excellent 32-song career retrospective. | | Arranged chronologically, STAND BACK traces the evolution of the Allmans, from edge-pushing rockers (the first cut from the band's 1969 debut, "Don't Want You No More," with its shifting time signatures and jazz inflections, is almost progressive rock), to their country-rock of the '90s and 2000s. In between are fiery interpretations of blues classics by Blind Willie McTell and Muddy Waters, and songs by vocalist/keyboardist Gregg Allman and guitarist Dickey Betts, many of which ("Whipping Post," "Midnight Rider") are now blues-rock classics in their own right. With its driving, twin-drummer rhythm section, and complex organ/dual-guitar interplay, the band never misses a step on this superb collection. | Producer: Tom Dowd; Johnny Sandlin; Michael Barbiero; Warren Haynes; John Ryan; Johnny Cobb; The Allman Brothers Band; Mike Lawler; Tom Dowd; Adrian Barber; Johnny Sandlin; Michael Barbiero; The Allman Brothers Band (Compilation); Bill Levenson (Compilation) |

5 of 5 the reason for touring Tuesday, August 10, 2004 julie from manteo, nc
Ya know when I lived out in North Carolina all my friends would rave about the Allman Brothers Band, go on “tours” which at the time I thought they were in a band or something lol. But I guess they used to follow all these bands around like Allman Brothers, The Dead, etc. A total hippy gathering. Sounded like a lot of fun, I’m really bummed I missed out on all that, but now I feel a little better since I have been able to really experience their musical career. I picked up this cd not knowing anything of the Allman Brothers, and I can see why my friends followed them all over the country now. They are amazing! I highly recommend this cd to everyone who wants to really experience a musical revolution. It has all their songs from the past 35 years, good stuff y’all! Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Good stuff y'all! Wednesday, August 04, 2004 ramblinjam from McAlester, OK
You know I was never too into this type of music. Actually I’m not even sure if I can fit it into a genre because their music applies to so many different ones. But their music seems to come from the heart. It really brings back some memories for me. When I was younger I drove across country like 5 times and I remember the only thing on the radio was classic rock and country type music. The song rambling man really got me fired up when I was about to fall asleep at the wheel so I had to go out and buy this cd. I still listen to it every day so I can fall back into my memories of the good/bad times of living in McAlester, Oklahoma. This album has everything I need on 2 cd’s. I highly recommend it to anyone who is either a fan of the Allman Brothers, because it’s a nice collectors piece or a new fan because this cd is a great self starter to their music from the past 35 years.
