Together with his best pal Patrick, SpongeBob sets out to treacherous Shell City to reclaim Neptune's crown and save Mr. Krabs, in a spectacular adventure filled with "over-the-top, under-the-sea action and non-stop laughs!" (Mark S. Allen, UPN-TV) Featuring the voice talents of Tom Kenny (SpongeBob), Alec Baldwin, Jeffrey Tambor, Scarlett Johansson and a special appearance by David Hasselhoff, The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie is an uproariously funny comedy! "Delightful" Carla Mayer, San Francisco Chronicle "...adorable in its own spongy way." Jami Bernard, New York Daily News "...an animated adventure that's funnier than "Shark Tale" and more charming than "The Polar Express."" Michael Rechtshaffen, The Hollywood Reporter "The movie itself triumphs...it is a marvel of unleashed childishness, like a birthday party on the edge of spinning out of control." Dana Stevens, The New York Times "The delights of the movie lie in its zany characters, its goofy settings, and above all its surrealistic visual style." David Sterritt, Christian Science Monitor "Full of action and silliness that will delight rug rats, but it's still hip and absurd enough to entertain grown-ups, too." Lou Lumenick, New York Post
 Editor's Note
A passion for drawing, a penchant for the films of Jacques Cousteau, and a career as a marine biologist were SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS creator Stephen Hillenburg's inspirations for bringing this fun character to life. A hugely popular Nickelodeon show based on SpongeBob inspires THE SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS MOVIE, which brings the oceanic cast of animated oddballs to the big screen. The bubbly inhabitants of Bikini Bottom are in more trouble than a sinking ship at the start of the film. The evil Plankton (Doug Lawrence) has hatched a plan to send the Krusty Krab burger chain out of business. He steals the secret formula for the delicious Krabby Patty and then frames Mr. Krabs (Clancy Brown) for the theft of King Neptune's (Jeffrey Tambor) crown. With all eyes on Mr. Krabs, Plankton starts selling Krabby Patties at his own Chum Bucket restaurant. Just then, SpongeBob (Tom Kenny) steps in and, with his starfish pal Patrick (Rick Faggerbakke), sets out to find the crown and get Mr. Krabs out of hot water. What follows is an epic adventure in which the pair encounter some slippery villains, and a hero in the form of special guest star David Hasselhoff--who appears as himself in a bizarre fusion of animation and live action. SpongeBob and Patrick frantically race back to Bikini Bottom to stop megalomaniacal Plankton from taking over the world. All of this is played out before an eclectic soundtrack, which pairs indie rockers like The Flaming Lips and Wilco with teen-pop princess Avril Lavigne. Taking its first triumphant step into the feature film world, SPONGEBOB soaks up an enthusiastic crowd of children and adults alike.

| | Professional Reviews | New York Times "[A] marvel of unleashed childishness, like a birthday party on the edge of spinning out of control. The familiar voices from the television show are bolstered by a smattering of movie and television stars..." 11/19/2004 p.E1Los Angeles Times "Its instinctive, unstoppable cheerfulness can be, as all those millions of viewers have found, something of a tonic if you're in the mood..." 11/19/2004 p.E1 Entertainment Weekly "[T]he best moments in his first movie outing are those that feel most TV-like, just another day in the eternally optimistic undersea society created with such contagious silliness by Stephen Hillenburg." 11/26/2004 p.90 Sight and Sound "[B]eguiling fun..." 03/01/2005 p.78 Village Voice 8 of 10 No Pixar? No problem! An unstoppable good-mood generator, the resolutely 2-D SpongeBob SquarePants M - Ed Park Austin Chronicle 6 of 10 This is another helping of utterly disposable entertainment in an already flooded youth market, and - Marrit Ingman Chicago Sun-Times 8 of 10 SpongeBob (voice by Tom Kenny) has a ready-made legion of fans who follow his adventures every Saturday morning on Nickelodeon. I even know parents who like the show, which is fast-paced and goofy and involves SpongeBob's determination to amount to something in this world. In the movie, he dreams of becoming manager of Krusty Krab II, the new outlet being opened by Eugene H. Krabs (Clancy Brown), the most successful businesscrab in the ocean-floor community of Bikini Bottom...All of this happens in jolly animation with bright colors and is ever so much more entertaining than you are probably imagining...Assuming that few members of SpongeBob's primary audience are reading this (or can read), all I can tell you is, the movie is likely to be more fun than you expect...One of the stranger scenes in "SBSP" comes when SpongeBob and Patrick get wasted at Goofy Goober's nightclub, where ice cream performs the same function as booze. This leads to the ice cream version of a pie fight, and terrible hangovers the next morning; no wonder, as anyone who has ever used a sponge on ice cream can testify. - Roger Ebert Variety 7 of 10 "The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie" takes on rather too much water during its extended feature-length submersion. Stephen Hillenburg's enormously clever and appealing animated creation, which has been one of the Nickelodeon channel's biggest hits since debuting in 1999, still possesses charm, as well as visual and musical appeal, on the bigscreen. But as with many short-form TV entities when sextupled in length, "SpongeBob" proves more palatable as scrumptious fast food than full-scale repast...Amusing live-action opening has a bunch of scruffy pirates singing the familiar "SpongeBob" title tune a la Gilbert and Sullivan in gleeful celebration of the discovery of movie ducats in a treasure chest...While the journey is neither uneventful nor without humor, a certain tedium sets in that isn't helped by uninspired set pieces such as an interlude in which a depressed SpongeBob and Patrick get "drunk" on ice cream at the Goofy Goober nightspot. Giving things a funny jolt, however, is a live-action comic climax in which a self-deprecating David Hasselhoff gives the intrepid heroes a ride on his back as he speeds them back home across the waves like a human surfboard, with a desperate Dennis in hot pursuit. - Todd McCarthy
