I bought this video so my 8 year old would be better able to follow the movie. It worked because he really enjoyed the movie, but my wife (who had not seen the cartoons as a child, nor watched this video) had a much harder time following the movie as some plot keys (history of Speed's older brother) were introduced sporadically and easy to miss. I enjoyed rewatching these old episodes from my childhood with my child. We both laughed at the "trunk monkey with a wrench" gags and were glad to see them carried over to the new movie. the story itself is pretty normal. Speed, Trixie, Spritle, Chim Chim, Racer X, Sparky, Mom, and Pops get into all sorts of crazy adventures. Since the dvd is from the 1960s the animation is not perfect, nor is it very terrible either. The only thing that may be bothersome is the fact that the English dub does not match the mouth movements of the characters. Also, there are no subtitles, nor the option of listening in the original Japanese language. One must fast forward to view another scene, there is no skip index on this dvd.) Even for the price offered here, the buyer gets quite a lot for 11 episodes. There is a character gallery, for both the heroes and villians, production notes, and interesting facts about the voice actors and the original Japanese creators of the show. This is a must have for avid anime fans and for fans that grew up watching the show. Speed Racer has been a staple in pop culture for decades, and now it is apparent why. Was this review helpful?
