| | Album Notes and Credits | Notes & Personnel Info | | The eighth volume of the Hip Hop Hits series, presented by Source magazine, covers major rap singles from the latter half of 2003 and early 2004. These discs are never intended to be complete, since you'd need a few volumes to cover all the notable singles released during the span of a year. Some odd choices are made, such as T.I.'s "Be Easy" instead of the much bigger hit "Rubber Band Man," but there are plenty of memorable inclusions. Kanye West's "Through the Wire," J-Kwon's "Tipsy," Chingy's "Right Thurr," "Damn" by YoungbloodZ, and "Can't Stop, Won't Stop" by Young Gunz are the highlights. ~ Andy Kellman | | The Source magazine has earned its exalted spot as the premier hip-hop magazine. Its thorough and uncompromising reporting on the world of rap, its culture, its conflicts, and its stars is well known. It stands to reason that their yearly compilations are the definitive representations of the best the music has to offer, and since the first volume of THE SOURCE PRESENTS HIP-HOP HITS, which opened fittingly with Notorious B.I.G.'s "Hypnotize," the collections have been highly sought after. | | Volume 8 of the series, issued in 2004, sees the music as strong as ever, as the Source tips its hat to both old and new schools, both underground and mainstream, both smooth and dirty. Tracks from old-guard artists E-40 and Scarface stand next to newcomers like the incredibly talented Kanye West and speed-spitters Young Gunz. The ultra-fun dance track "Salt Shaker" by the Ying Yang Twins, and the poppy "Tipsy" by J-Kwon share space with the more complex world of Gang Starr's "Skills." The Source is, as its name implies, the ultimate source for all things hip-hop and THE SOURCE PRESENTS HIP-HOP HITS VOL. 8 continues its reign. | Producer: Tracii McGregor; DJ Premier; "Fredwreck" Farid Nassar; Ensayne Wayne; Clue; The Track Boyz; Sedeck; Irv Gotti; Jerry Duplessis; Jonathan "Lil' Jon" Smith; Kanye West; Michael Denten; Rick Rock; Scott Storch; Swizz Beatz; Wyclef Jean; Leroy Peeples; Trak S |
