| | Professional Reviews | GamingWorld X 8 of 10 Soul Calibur 2's storyline is surprisingly interesting for a fighter. This isn't some random tournament like Dead or Alive; as in previous Soul games, each fighter is in this for his or her own personal reasons. In the end, though, the deep character profiles and individual endings don't change up the gameplay much. Arcade mode still sees the player through a series of seemingly random fights, until finally the player battles what appears to be his rival and then the final boss. Arcade mode is hardly scratching the surface, though, as Soul Calibur 2 boasts over a dozen modes. netjak 9 of 10 You may be pensively looking over at other games and wonder why SC2 skimped on all of those luscious features. I don't understand it all either, but that doesn't stop me from proclaiming this as the best 3D fighter I've played to date.

4 of 5 If You have the slightest interest in video games, Sunday, September 14, 2003 Shane (Hwang) from Dallas
The is the funnest fighting game out there. The graphics are so sharp and colorful. The gameplay is fast and smooth. The sound quality is very realistic. What is there not to like about this game? If you have not heard about this game, you must have been living under a rock. This may be the Game Of The Year. It is so much better than Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution. Sure, the fighting system in VF:4 is deep, but it's gets boring after a short period of time. It's not about depth, it's about fun. And SC2 is so much fun. If you have some friends that can play against you, it makes it much more fun. This game will having you up all night playing over and over and over. This will be a classic.
Of course, with all of the goodness, nothing is perfect. This games has a couple of flaws. Weapon Master Mode is a great attempt at replay value, but it's a little too short. Ypou could easily beat it in a day. More than likely you have friends to play it with, so this can be overlooked. The other issue is that the training mode is not very deep. It simply allows you to fight against a stale CPU , look at your moveslist, and change settings. But most of the training and discovery is done during actual battling, so it doesn't matter. There a some other small issues, but they can be easily overlooked. If you enjoy fighting games, this is the game for you. If you enjoy fantasy games, this is the game for you. if you enjoy video games, this is at least worth a try. This is the game to buy in 2003.

5 of 5 Battle for the Soul Edge returns! Saturday, September 13, 2003 Jordan Ratliff from Ohio
Probably one of the best fighting games I have ever played, and almost unlimited replay value. With each character new possibilites open up, each with mostly a different weapon(and you can get even more), tons of moves to use(most of the moves are really cool looking). In the Gamecube version Link is the special character who is actually quite good. As far as the graphics go, they are really realistic, especially for the gamecube. And as the controller goes absoulutely no problems what so ever, the game is so finely crafted its almost perfect. And one more hint don't play through the entire game on easy, you'll end up getting bored of it pretty fast, give yourself a challenge, and something extremely addictive. GET SOUL CALIBUR 2!!! 5 of 5 Soul Calibur 2 Friday, September 12, 2003 A Gamer from Around Pittsburgh, PA
"Soul Calibur II" is one of the best fighting games I've ever played! It has everything you could ever ask for in a fighting game including Weapon's Master Mode, Arcade Mode, V.S. Mode, Time Attack, and many many more amazing features. The WMM has plenty of levels to heep you busy, especially when you want to unlock all of the characters, and outfits, and weapons, and so on. The gameplay is so fun you'll be playing it for hours, and the V.S. mode is a blast to play with your friends, or enemys for that matter. Every character has there own fighting stlye, like Talim, who is fast, and more powerful than she looks, and then there's Astaroth, who's slower than others, but very very strong. This game has enoughh of a good choice of fighters that it'll be easy for almost anyone to find a someone thet can kick some major tush with. This game has really good music in it, also. 5 of 5 SCII for Gamecube Thursday, September 11, 2003 Ryan from Orlando, Florida
I see this game and the cover really dosen't take my attention. I was referred to it by my friends, who said it was one of the top Gamecube games. So I rented it from Blockbuster. I was determined to get it. This game has some of the best graphics ever. Unlike in Tekken games, you can circle your opponent. This has to be the best fighting game ever! Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 A Game That Words Can't Do Justice To Monday, September 08, 2003 A Gamer from California City, California
Soul Calibur 2 has finally been released to the consoles and it has never looked better. New to the console version from the arcades are the fighters Necrid, Link, Spawn and Heihachi. While Necrid is on all three systems, the other three are exclusively on Gamecube, X-Box, and Playstation 2 respectively. On the fighting mechanics side, Soul Calibur 2 boasts an amazingly good fighting engine that features full 3D movement, parries, counters, and the strength-increasing Soul Charge. One of the greatest things that can be said about the games is that it's well-balanced. It means that button-master can look cool in combat, but won't be able to beat an experienced player. It also means that move-memorizers can find a challenge in those players that play utilizing a few good moves. The graphics haven't changed much from the last console installment, but they are still gorgeous. The sound is excellent too, excluding the announcer. With tons to unlock and plenty of gameplay, it's a must-buy! Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Upgrade Sunday, September 07, 2003 goofmachines from Sun Prairie, WI
Soul Calibur 2 is an excellent game. I had a lot of fun playing it and all the new characters and unlockables really added to it. Even though it was a lot of fun to play, it is almost too easy to beat. Once you have everything unlocked it gets kind of boring, but that doesn't mean the fun stops. Even though I can't really do anything in weapon master mode I can still play the other modes. Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 Does it live up to it's legendary predecessor? Friday, September 05, 2003 Flashlight from Alberta, Canada
Soul Calibur 1, sequel to Soul Blade, was one of the must-have games on the ill-fated Sega Dreamcast. This was simply because SC1 was superb in every way. The graphics were top-notch, the characters were well balanced, and gameplay (The most important part of fighting games) was perfect.
4 years later, we have SC II. But, the question remains, does it live up to SC1? In a way, it does.
SC1's graphics were perfect, and they are better in SC II now, but it's hard to improve upon SC1's, so SC II's graphics may seem to fall short of expectations (Though, they still are beautiful).
In terms of game modes and characters, SC II provides very fun and entertaining game modes (Most notably weapons master, which has you completing missions with special conditions, such as health recovery or easy ring outs). And, all characters are fairly well balanced. If one seems over powered, you can easily find a way around the opponent’s strategy, and he can to the same to you, making SC II a fun, fair, absolute blast!
The controls have an excellent response time and several key features (Like 8 way run and Guard impact) make this game's control very fun and unique. If your a casual player who doesn't wish to memorize a characters movelists and doesn't really care about mastering a character, it's easy just to pick up and play this game. For those who do wish to master a character, a whole new world will open up. No longer will those "button mashers" stand a chance against you, and it's brings a huge sense of tactics to the game. :)
I really recommend this game to you if either your into fighting games, at all, or if your even a little interested in this game. It may not live up entirely to it's perfect predecessor, but very few games can (Even on these next gen consoles). :)
