Album Notes and Credits

Notes & Personnel Info
Rounder Records once more goes to its deep catalog of labels and formerly contracted artists to issue a nocturnal soul compilation should rake in an easy buck. Many of those listed here are legendary performers: from Solomon Burke and Ann Peebles to Laura Nyro, the Holmes Brothers and Irma Thomas, to name but a few. The performances of these tunes themselves are often another matter. The cheesy production on Otis Clay's "You're the One That I Choose" is a case in point with its tinny keyboards and synth backdrops, or the whining synthesizer drone in Thomas' "Old Records." The bottom line is that most of these tunes don't stand together very well on their own, while they may have fit quite nicely on their respective albums. There are a few surprises of course. The two selections from the Holmes Brothers are the real thing and sound like it too. Their cover of the Beatles "And I Love Her" is late-night soul at its best. Likewise, Nyro's "La La Means I Love You," is full of depth, emotion and innocence, perfect music for loving or listening. Johnny Adams "Your Love Is So Doggone Good" is fine anytime. Peebles shimmering "Just You, Just Me," is certainly for the midnight hour and it is easily the most powerful tune on the set. This is a mixed bag to be sure, but there are some excellent moments here. ~ Thom Jurek

Producer: Scott Billington (Compilation)
