| | Album Notes and Credits | Notes & Personnel Info | | Collectables' somewhat generically titled Soul Classics series actually focuses on the romantic side of style, gathering soulful love songs from the '70s. Soul Classics, Vol. 1 features the Isley Brothers' "For the Love of You," the Intruders' "I Wanna Know Your Name," and David Ruffin's "Statue of a Fool" among the highlights of its eight selections. Though each of the album's cuts, which include work by Phyllis Hyman, Earth, Wind & Fire, and the O'Jays, is solid, the collection's overall length is too short to recommend it to anyone but the most casual fans of classic soul. ~ Heather Phares | | Although its song selection is a little haphazard, EMI-Capitol Special Markets' Soul Classics, Vol. 1 is a nice sampler of '70s and '80s soul. Since it spans so much time, from Little Anthony & the Imperials' '60s hit "Goin' Out of My Head" to Freddie Jackson's 1985 rave-up "Rock Me Tonight (For Old Times Sake)," it's a little inconsistent, but there are enough good moments -- Al Green's "Full of Fire," Ann Peebles' "I'm Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down," Peabo Bryson & Roberta Flack's "You're Lookin' Like Love to Me," A Taste of Honey's "Boogie Oogie Oogie" -- to make it a worthwhile budget-priced collection. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine | | Collectables' somewhat generically titled Soul Classics series actually focuses on the romantic side of style, gathering soulful love songs from the '70s.
