DVDirect VRD-MC5 DVD Recorder transfers home movies and digital photos to DVD without a PC. Get direct, real-time video DVD recording from virtually any camcorder, VCR, or Digital Video Recorder or from memory cards. Preview video or up to 6 digital photos at a time using built-in 2.5" color LCD screen. Recorder offers automatic DVD menu and title creation and the choice of four preset menu designs. Recorder performs automatic DVD chaptering every 5, 10, or 15 minutes, even stop-timer recording. Records on 4.7GB DVD+R/+RW and 8.5GB DVD+R double layer disks. Five recording quality modes allow 12 hours of video to be recorded per disk. Transfer high definition video in native 1080i resolution from Sony AVCHD HDD/MemoryStick Handycam camcorders to DVD recorded in H.264 format, allowing 95 minutes of HD video to be recorded on a DVD playable on most Blu-ray disk players. Record all the video at a 6X speed (60 minutes of video in about 10 minutes). Recorder holds a maximum of 2,000 photos.

Very happy so far with the Sony VRDMC5. I have been worried the last few years about losing all my old VCR and Hi 8 tapes shot from expensive vacations, tours of my aging parent's country house back in the 80's, footage of long dead dogs and other pets, valuable instructional videos from chiropractic college in the mid-90's, and lovely girlfriends from the days of my youth, to age, humidity, and the Florida heat.
It is with great relief that I found it relatively easy to start copying these old tapes to DVD. Compatible with output plugs and cables from my old camcorder and VCR player, this unit double checks with you before letting you finalize or format discs for recording, as well as showing the time left for recording on each disc.
The little window in the player shows you exactly what is being recorded. Choose from different quality levels to increase or decrease recording time. The device even pauses recording if the footage ends, so you don't have to be in the room the entire time to monitor progress.
Highly recommended.

This product has worked very well for its intended purpose. I record services at my church for review and analysis by the worship leaders. The camera's A/V patch cord connects as intended. The first of two shortcomings I found is that the finished DVD's main menu has "01/01" at the bottom suggesting a date. But, I have not been able to find where to change the date (if possible) for this device. The second is that I could not get the USB connection to work on an older Sony branded camera. Perhaps if I were dubbing from the camera's mini DV tape in play mode, it might have worked. But, my main use is sending live video to be recorded. Overall, I love it. The auto-chapter feature allows much easier navigation around the finished recording than a VCR's fast forward and rewind buttons provide. Also, it's much easier to slide a DVD into my notebook rather than the VHS tapes I had been using prior. I wish I had found this sooner. :)

I found it very easy to hook up to it with my camcorder as well as hooking up a VCR. If there is an easier way to transfer VHS to DVD I would like to see it.

4 of 5 VRD-MC5 DVD Recorder: Good, but could be improved 12/25/2007

If you own an AVCHD (High-Def) Sony camcorder, this recorder makes a lot of sense in order to catalog high-def video. Unfortunately, the process (and the documentation) to down-convert high-def to standard-def and record to DVD is not quite as straight-forward. But, it can be done. Sony could improve this product by documenting this down-converting process. Also, the recorder could be improved by making it compatible with other name-brand AVCHD camcorders.
