5 of 5 FABULOUS GIFT Wednesday, November 02, 2005 A Customer from Houston, Texas
I purchased this remote for my husband as an anniversary gift. Boy, I couldn't have made a better purchase. This remote is fabulous and he couldn't love it more! We had problems with previous remotes needing just the right angle to work. Not this remote. It's super sensitive infared works from all over our our media room. Ease of set up and use were amazing too!
I highly recommend this item as a gift for your special man! Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 Probably the best UR around Monday, September 26, 2005 JM from Miami, FL
Be prepared to spend a lot of time up front programming this unit. But once you do, it is the only RC you'll need. It runs everything including my DishNetwork satellite receivers. I've used it for over 2 years with no problems. It even lets you hot switch batteries without losing your settings. One-button macros let you turn your entire system on and off. A great buy. 4 of 5 If you want an universal remote, this is it. Wednesday, August 31, 2005 rsc from Lakewood, CA
Expansive options and menu for most remote devices in the market, with various customization tools and 'learning' or programming capabilities. Some menu's are very hard to program and thus difficult to access. Overall value is good and if you want an universal remote, this may be the one. Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 If you can think it, this remote can do it. Thursday, June 16, 2005 James S. from Noblesville, IN
This device is well designed. Its has significant flexibility in user configured functions. I have programmed the functions of twelve remotes into this unit. Its programming design is very logical. However, this can be obscured by a somewhat confusing instruction manual. (which you must read). Pay close attention to how the manual identifies button types.
The text labeling is quite good. I was surprised to learn that I could program my lights and other non-AV systems that have IR remote controls. The "pre-programmed button" symbols are also clear. However, the "pre-programmed button" text labels are difficult to read (because of text size) unless the user has perfect vision. In many cases, I duplicated button functions with text labeled functions because they are more readable.
I liked the remote so much that I purchased a second one. The neat part is that I can copy the program from the first unit to the second very easily.
In addition, this remote is ideal if you have IR repeaters throughout your house, as I do. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Great remote - cheaper here Sunday, April 03, 2005 Bill from Deland, Florida
I am 59 uears old and had six remotes. Finally I bought the Sony RM AV 3100. I was able to program it without help, even with a DVR/Cable box from Scientific Atlanta (there was no preprogrammed code) for this equipment. The LEARN procedure was helpful. I can operate TV/CABLE/DVD/DVR/Receiver with one remote, and I have not lost it yet! I am very pleased. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 The next best thing since the best thing after sli Friday, March 25, 2005 Paul@Peth.us from Lewis Center, OH
I've been pining over this remote for about a year, so when it finally went on sale, I snatched it up. It was easy to set up, and easy to use. I went from 5 remotes (TV, DVR, DVD, VCR and Stereo) to this one.
It has automatic programming capabilities, so if you have a function on a remote, it can be easily copied to this one. There's also a multi-step feature, which means I can pause what I'm watching on the DVR, switch over to the split screen, and enlarge the screen, all with one button. Another button will take me back to the DVR, unpause and enlarge that screen.
My only complaints are that it's a little larger than I'd like, and the touch screen can be slightly ornery, but it's smaller than 5 remotes, and aren't ALL electronics ornery at some point? Was this review helpful?

Point 1 being buy.com has it cheaper than ANYONE. Point 2-This remote is flawless besides I wish the backlight was a tad brighter. Controls my Cablebox/DVR and ALL of my components wonderfully. It had no problem learning any remote I wanted it to. AWESOME product. Buy it NOW! Was this review helpful?

Like i said above I got rid of five (5) remotes. I even custom programmed a mifi xm radio. This thing uses 4 batteries, which sounds bad, but consider that it replaces the 10 batteries I would need otherwise with the individual remotes. It's worth the money if you're an electronics freak like me, or just someone trying to minimize the clutter. Was this review helpful?

I had tried several different "universal" remotes over the past few years, but none of them had anywhere the level of diversity that this remote offers.
I use a projector and a mixed bag of a/v system components. My remote control stack threatened to take over an entire space on our couch. I appreciate this remote so much I am considering digging out my X10 brand modules [yes- with the appropriate interface system to convert IR into RF this remote can control the lighting in your home!] and re-doing my home theatre. i only abandoned it because I bought a DVD player which the X10 universal could not control, so I sacked the lights rather than add another remote to the system.
Probably the best part was when I thought I had made a mistake in buying the remote. I was trying to learn the codes for navigating my menus on my InFocus X2 projector. I would line up the remotes, press and assign the key to be learned on the RM-AV3100, and then press the key on the projector remote. I was shutting off the projector remote so the full code string wasn't memorized, which in turn would lock up the Sony.
After some trial and error I realized that the system was working perfectly, I was just the weak link.
I highly recommend this for anyone who has a large number of hard to control devices, or simply wants a real honest working alternative to the plethora of cheesy and often unworkable remotes available. Was this review helpful?

Everyone seems to say this was hard to use. NOT IN ANY WAY. If you follow the directions it will be fine. Many messages stating "complex, hard to use". It depends on the user.
Good points:
1) Big LCD screen
2) Good touch response
3) Good price
4) Ease of use
Bad:
1) LCD could be brighter/color (for the price this can be overlooked)
2) Although can rename labels nat all can be renamed
3) Large buttons do not light up (Sony needs to look into this or at least have them GLOW)
Overall, good remote for the price range of <$100. Would not pay for for this. Nor should you ever pay retail if you can find it cheaper on the net.

I saw this remote for half the price then what they have it for ($199.99) at my local Best Buy, I was so happy with the price that I called my cousin and he purchased one also. I have to say that I am very impressed with this remote, although not all my components had presets for it, what impressed me the most was the Sony Remote's ability to learn from the other component remotes (Digital Satellite Box, DVD, Receiver, etc.) that I had. So even if there aren't any presets for your component, as long as you have the remote you can program it to your Sony. The instruction manual is not as user friendly as I would have liked, but as you go along programming the remote it is easy to pick up on your own.
One of the things that I loved the most was that it was already programmed for functions such as PIP (Picture in Picture)! I would recommend this to anyone that has more than one component, and hates having more than one remote laying around the house. Was this review helpful?
2 of 3 customers found this review helpful. 5 of 5 Big, but works great! Monday, October 25, 2004 Adam from Baltimore, MD
This thing is awesome! It controls everything and it does it well. The initial set-up takes a little bit of getting used to, but it flies after that. I had it completely programmed for 7 different components and 10 different macros within 2 hours of opening the box. I've had it for just over a week and I haven't had a problem yet. The only complaint I have is the size. It just doesn't feel right to have a remote this big and heavy. It is completely impractical to control it with just one hand. Was this review helpful?

Thats right, 1 remote is all you need thanks to the SONY RM-AV3100.
I've had plenty of those so called universal remotes that at best will controll 3 devices. This one actualy does it all !!
For this price you certainly can't go wrong. Was this review helpful?

This remote is wonderful and I love the system control buttons. The documentation is not well written, but once you get the hang of programming this, it is easy. One thing that you must understand is that when you "learn" a key, you cannot change the label or "learn" the key again until you hold Del and push the button. Also, when editing the onscreen keys with a few different options, you must hold the component name key on the screen. Holding the hardware key won't work and the manual is not very clear, I think. I have successfully programmed my remote from scratch. I decided that I did not want any presets, so I just started from the beginning. I love the system control buttons. With one button push, my tv turns on, tivo goes to now playing, stereo turns on, goes to correct input, turns volume up, and my video switch box also turns on and goes to the correct input. If I remember correctly, you can have like 18 of these and you can also name them. This remote is amazing! Was this review helpful?

I bought this remote after a lot of research as I was looking for a complete universal remote that could replace all my existing remotes. I finally settled on this and I am not at all disappointed. I now got rid of 10 remotes. Programing is really easy if you can understand the basic operation. The best feature is the "one key operation." At the press of one key it will turn the TV on change the input, turn on the receiver change the input to TV and then to dolby DTS mode, then turn on the cable box. The same can be programed to operate your VCR, DVD, Replay/Tivo. It can be programed to shut off the whole system at the press of a button. It even has timers to shut off or turn on the system at a set time as you desire. My wife loves it!!!!! Wife approved. Even my mother-in-law learnt to operate this within a few minutes......its that easy. I can recommend this without any hesitation. Was this review helpful?

This Sony is the best, period. I use it to control all of my A/V equip + an electrical outlet that feeds a 4 foot indoor fountain + light dimmer and ceiling fan speed control. I might gain 200 lbs on the couch, but I'll seldom have to leave it again. It has fully editable touchscreen labels & you can adjust the time between macro functions, something very few other remotes offer, especially in this $ range. I ordered on a Tuesday night, elected next day air, and got my Sony at work on Thursday at 2pm in perfect condition. I couldn't be more pleased. Plus, I saved about $100 compared to Circuit City and Crutchfield.com prices and didn't have to get a reman unit. My one complaint is that the hard buttons are not backlit; a few glow in the dark, but that's it. Save for this one flaw, this is the PERFECT remote. Was this review helpful?
