You get the idea from the writeup that the Sony external CD/DVD drive doesn't require AC power. In my limited experience with it, the drive will not operate without the AC power. But, overall, it appears to be a high-quality device and works as advertised. The form factor is amazing. Since it is portable, it sure would have been nice to have an included carrying bag/case to keep all of the cables/power supplies and the unit together. I use it for the Lenovo Thinkpad x41.

The product is compact and looks great. The USB interface makes usage a snap. So far, I have only tried the CD burner (not yet tried burning a DVD). I brought it for the size (and weight) and it met my expectation.

Unit works exactly as you'd expect: easy plug n play install, very quiet and compatible with all advertised formats. Excellent Sony workmanship, light and compact. Only drawback is that unit cannot be powered via USB which means that although it's targeted to portables, it cannot be used without a nearby power outlet.
