I purchased this drive primary to load programs into my Acer One Netbook, which has no drive what-so-ever. Saying that you can see that the drive is not usually connected to the netbook when I travel. The drie gets its power from the 120 VAC power supply that comes with it. The power supply is small, but it does require 120 VAC. Frankly, I have had a drive that worked off of the 5 VDC USB connection and I found it to suck the laptop's battery.The drive works well, just as expected. If you want to watch a movie and don't want to bring a portable, DVD player, this could work well in your motel room. The drive actually can do some things that my DVD drive that is installed in an older model HP laptop cannot do, so it has a potential for other uses. The drive installs with no problems. The enclosed software disk gives one a cripled version of a DVD movie player (one can upgrade for a nominal charge), so I uninstalled that. (I have already a DVD movie program that came with the netbook and another that came with a HDTV tuner, so the software was not necessary.) If you have software to burn a DVD, you can use the supplied software "as is" and it will perform just quite well. I have used the supplied software with other computers and I found it to be quite capable, with no upgrade. Was this review helpful?

This external DVD/CD RW drive from Sony is great. Terrific companion to my recently purchased Samsung NC10 Netbook, but will work with any PC or laptop. Very small and easy to use. Works great! Was this review helpful?
