With the possible exception of Larry Flynt, no one has gone farther by peddling sex while claiming to be a champion of free speech. Musically, his raunchy lyrics and heavily synthesized sound influenced a generation of Southern rappers, an impressive feat for an artist with only a modicum of talent. According to Luke, Somethin' Nasty, will be his last album. In some respects, it feels as if he has already checked out. The album features so many cameos by other rappers that you hardly hear Luke at all. When Luke does bother to rap, he provides the same old X-rated lyrics you've come to expect. Tracks like "Fat Girls" and "We Want Some Head" are self-explanatory. Luke at least attempts to try some new things musically such as the R&B-influenced track "Lollipop" and the heavy metal-tinged "Save Me From the Devil." Perhaps it's a sign of the time. When Luther Campbell first unleashed his sex-obsessed psyche on America, he shocked the music world. After years of imitators mimicking his raunchy style, Luke now seems like just another dirty old man. ~ Jon Azpiri | | Just when you thought things couldn't get any nastier, here comes erstwhile 2 Live Crew leader Luther Campbel (sometimes known as Luke, but here referred to as Uncle Luke) with a batch of unsavory tunes guaranteed to worry parents at 20 paces. With song titles such as "Suck Dis Dick" and "We Want Some Head," it's not difficult to imagine the tone of Campbell's lyrics. It's rare to find a hip-hop figure capable of making guest artists Snoop Dogg and Kurupt seem like Evan & Jaron. As always, Campbell surrounds his unabashed nastiness with pumping beats, heavy bass, and tracks guaranteed to rock your jeep and/or pulsate your woofers. Ultimately, this album is no major departure here for Campbell, more of a retrenchment in purposeful seediness, as SOMETHIN' NASTY finds our boy still as nasty as he wants to be. |
