Country purists may take offense at finding American Idol winner Carrie Underwood's debut album in the country section. An unabashedly manufactured commercial product, SOME HEARTS is the sound of mainstream country in the 2000s heavily steeped in glossy pop. There's nothing downhome or roots-conscious about Underwood's voice or looks: she's the pretty blonde next door with a fine singing voice, but the powers that be have made her a country artist, and that's what the public gets. |
 |
None of this is to say that SOME HEARTS is not a good pop album. The combination of Underwood's considerable gift and the slick, spot-on production of Dan Huff and Mark Bright makes for a fine package. Even on somewhat by-the-numbers tunes (like her smash hit "Inside Your Heaven"), Underwood sings with conviction, and she does well with both the ballads and the uptempo tracks. Idol viewers and fans of artists like Faith Hill and Shania Twain will want to check this out. |

Artist Overview
Carrie Underwood was the winner of the fourth AMERICAN IDOL reality-TV competition. Underwood sparked a mild controversy for being the first IDOL contestant to fully embrace country music--as opposed to the more preferred Top 40 pop styles of previous winners--and subsequently win the competition with that style. Her debut single, "Inside Your Heaven," hit number one on the Billboard pop and country charts, while her 2005 debut full-length, SOME HEARTS, topped the country charts, illustrating the sheer commercial power of the AMERICAN IDOL franchise.

5 of 5 Incredible Voice 12/19/2005
Curt from SoJo, UT
There is a reason that Carrie won American Idol. Her voice is amazing. I'm a big country fan, and am thrilled that a country voice has won the Idol. Her voice is insane, and the music on the CD is awesome.

3 of 5 Modern country-pop from American Idol 12/5/2005
redtunictroll from Earth, USA
This year's American Idol has fashioned a modern country album that takes its cues from contemporary stars like Martina McBride and Faith Hill. There are passing lines of fiddle and steel, and the lyrics have a homespun quality, but the overall vibe is pop, with booming productions that are filled with the electric guitars and big drums that will fill up arenas and concert halls. Underwood's voice is engaging, and the song readings are more assured than many of the hurried efforts on AI, but the songs themselves are often a weak link.
¶
Many of the songs, such as the Diane Warren title track, are emotionally generic, and the Nashville factory production simply adds to the blandness. When Underwood gets a lyric with some substance, such as the redemptive "Jesus, Take the Wheel" or the edgy "Before He Cheats," she digs right in, as she does for the rollicking "We're Young and Beautiful." Where she really shines is on her self-penned wide-eyed travelogue "I Ain't in Checotah Anymore," which says more and fits her better than a dozen songs from the Nashville pros.
¶
It's not exactly surprising that Underwood's debut would find her vocals in great form but her artistic voice yet to fully form. As she did on American Idol, she displays great technical chops and exudes the charisma of a seasoned performer. What's still missing is a personal style, particularly in song selection. A year or two on the road, singing this album and drumming up (or, hopefully, writing) material for her sophomore release should solidify her connection to the material. In the meantime, this is a professionally produced and strongly sung debut that has enough highpoints to entice radio and merit a spin or two at home. 3-1/2 stars, if allowed fractional ratings.
