| | Album Notes and Credits | Notes & Personnel Info | | This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. | | Contains two hidden tracks following "Eight Of Nine." | | The Ataris: Kris Roe (vocals, guitar, Mellotron, Moog synthesizer); | | John Collura (guitar, background vocals); Mike Davenport (bass); Chris Knapp (drums). | | Additional personnel includes: Angus Cooke (cello); James Muhawi (piano). | | Recorded at Ocean Studios, Burbank, California; Grandmaster, Hollywood, California and Orange Whip Studios, Santa Barbara, California. | | This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. | | With an EP and several full-length albums under their collective belt, the Ataris made their bones with five years of hard work, leading up to their debut for Columbia--SO LONG, ASTORIA. Principal writer/vocalist Kris Roe drew inspiration for the album's concept from author Richard Hell's novel GO NOW, exploring his past stomping grounds with a Polaroid camera and a notebook. Recapturing the essence of past memories made excellent fodder for the songs that make up SO LONG, ASTORIA. | | Written to his daughter, "The Saddest Song," is sweet and heartfelt, coming across with even more emotional impact reprised as an acoustic, hidden track at the end of the CD. Longtime fans will experience momentary deja vu as a new version of "I Won't Spend Another Night Alone" sneaks into the sequence as well (originally found on 1999's BLUE SKIES, BROKEN HEARTS). Despite the move to one of the biggest labels in the world with SO LONG, ASTORIA, the Ataris' indie sensibilities and integrity remain intact. | Producer: Lou Giordano |
| | Artist Overview | | The Ataris were discovered by Vandals bassist Joe Escalante and subsequently signed to his label, Kung Fu Records. Once a full band was assembled by Ataris frontman Kris Roe, the group began a series of increasingly successful albums and tours with many of their musical heroes, including NOFX and Social Distortion. With their 2003 major-label debut SO LONG, ASTORIA the earnest pop-punk rockers reached an even wider audience and had their first major hit with a cover of Don Henley's "Boys of Summer." |

5 of 5 Amazing... Wednesday, March 19, 2003 ZacAndLuce from NJ
I've been a fan of the Ataris for awhile now. I remember first hearing their music and immediately falling in love. It just gave me this feeling that I can't explain, but it was amazing. I've been listening to the Ataris ever since. I saw the band play live once in my life, and it was one of the most amazing days I will ever have. That feeling that I had gotten the first time I had heard them was back, only more intense and more real.
I was extremely excited to hear SLA, but I was kind of nervous. What if this album was different? What if my love for the Ataris was about to fade? So after waiting and waiting, the album came out, and of course, I was out right away to buy it. After listening to it once, I was assured that the Ataris were still the band I had grown to love. That feeling was still there. SLA is a combination of the intense emotions that you would expect from the Ataris, along with a song that could keep you glued to your cd player for hours at a time. Anyone who is a fan of the Ataris or just a fan of good music in general should buy this cd and give it a chance. you won't be disappointed.
So what more can I say...SO Long Astoria. It's amazing...just amazing... Was this review helpful?
