After all, he has had the good fortune of being mentored by arguably the industry's best producer (Dr. Dre) and its shrewdest businessman (Master P). Now that Snoop's name has become synonymous with platinum plaques, the next logical step in his evolution was to do some mentoring of his own. Snoop's first entrepreneurial undertaking is the debut from fellow LBC mashers Tha Eastsidaz (Tray Dee and Goldie Loc). While the group's chemistry flourishes on the spirited lead single "G'd Up," Snoop often overshadows his prot?g?s by being predominantly featured on most of the LP's cuts. Also, the overwhelming abundance of guests (Dr. Dre, Xzibit, Kurupt, Warren G, and Nate Dogg) precludes the Eastsidaz from achieving any lasting unit cohesion, often making the duo seem like visitors on their own debut. ~ Matt Conaway | | Though Tha Eastsidaz are a debut rap group, the fact the Snoop Dogg is a member goes a long way to help make the group's introduction to the music industry a smooth affair. With the help of fellow Long Beach rapper Tray Deee and newcomer Goldie Loc, Tha Eastsidaz remain faithful to the West Coast-flavored G'd-up hip-hop that first put Snoop on the map. On SNOOP DOGG PRESENTS THA EASTSIDAZ, the three MCs trade verses of low-riding and (for lack of a better term) West-siding. Songs like "Be Thankful" and "Take It Back to '85" illustrate the trio's penchant for less typical subject matter and show impressive lyrical diversity. And guest appearances from some of the Left Coast's finest (i.e., Kurupt and Xzibit) make this effort a true reminder of what the West has in store.
