 Editor's Note
Sergeant Tom Beckett finds himself saddled with an inexperienced partner on a dangerous assignment to track down and eliminate a Colombian drug lord. As they stalk their prey deep into the jungles of Panama they each recognize a version of himself in the other and hopefully will use that to their advantage before time runs out.
 Plot Summary
When the American government launches a covert operation to depose an opposition leader in Panama, they team a veteran army marksman with a greenhorn sniper who is unproven on the battlefield to do the dirty work. The kid is arrogant at first, and virtually ignored by the jaded older soldier who's seen-it-all-before. But the stark reality of murder, even at a distance, is too much for the young man to bear. His fear and uncertainty end up putting the entire mission in jeopardy -- and his veteran partner may be the one who pays the greatest price.

It isn't a particularly original film, but what it does, it does well. We've seen so many bad movies about guys walking through the jungle with rifles that it's interesting the way this one grabs us through its command of the locations and its storytelling skill. - Roger Ebert

1 of 1 customers found this review helpful. 2 of 5 SNIPER (TECHNICAL OVERVIEW) Monday, August 16, 1999 BOB COOK from PALATKA, FLORIDA
AS AN VIETNAM VET AND EX-SNIPER WITH 59 CONFIRMED
KILLS THIS MOVIE INTERESTED ME WHEN IT CAME OUT.
I THOUGHT SOME OF THE SCENES WERE PRETTY ACCURATE
WHILE OTHERS WERE A LITTLE OUTLANDISH ESPECIALLY THE LONG SHOT BY BILLY ZANE WHEN HE KILLED THE DRUG DEALER WHILE HOLDING HIS RIFLE FREEHAND AND
SWAYING ALL OVER THE PLACE COUPLED WITH A NICE JERK OF THE TRIGGER. OH WELL I WISH THEY HAD GONE
INTO THE TECHNICAL END OF THE BUSINESS MORE. I THOUGHT THE BEST KILL IN THE MOVIE WAS THE FIRST ONE AT THE START OF THE MOVIE. THIS REALLY WAS THE ONLY FAIRLY ACCURATE PORTRAYAL I THOUGHT OF WHAT IS A DIRTY BUSINESS. DON'T LOOK AT THEIR EYES WE WERE TAUGHT. OVERALL THIS MOVIE WAS A LITTLE FLASHBACK INTO A HELL I HAVE TRIED TO FORGET BUT STILL IT IS THE ONLY REAL MOVIE OUT THERE THAT CONCENTRATES ON THIS SUBJECT MATTER FOR NOW ANYWAY. I THOUGHT THE SNIPER IN SAVING
PRIVATE RYAN WAS PRETTY DECENT EXCEPT HIS LEFTHANDED SHOOTING OF A RIGHT HANDED BOLT ACTION. Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 One shot....one kill. Tuesday, June 22, 1999 Dr. Anthrax from Granville, Ohio
A pretty tight shoot-em-up for the buffs of super accurate guns! Although it suffers from a somewhat murky plot overall, the dynamic between the young hot-shot (no pun intended) played well by Billy Zane, and the grizzled vet marine (Tom Berrenger) makes up for it in spades. Some powerful scenes, and lots to keep you tuned in. Overall a great action pic, though not exactly Saving Private Ryan. Was this review helpful?
