| | Professional Reviews | DVDLaser.com 8 of 10 Let us reflect a moment upon the success of Smokey and the Bandit . In retrospect it was the pinnacle of Burt Reynolds' boxoffice popularity and the debut-slash-pinnacle of Hal Needham's directing career. Shot in 1976 and released in 1977, it rode the wave, in Jimmy Carter's wake, of the New South's the-Civil-War-is-finally-behind-us fashionability. It was also one of the first films to cash in on a fad that presaged the popularity ofInternet chat room anonymity, the CB radio craze. By all reports, the stars made up their dialog as they went along (if Needham's other movies are a reflection of his real talents he should never have let go of Smokey 's editor), but Reynolds had been working hard on developing a consistent, winning screen persona and had genuinely tapped into the essence of what made him attractive. - Doug Pratt Apollo Guide 9 of 10 I don't mean that it's as phenomenal as those films in the acting department, but it is certainly a film "classic" and a landmark in Reynolds' career, solidifying his status as a 1970s pop culture icon. The true mark of a good action flick is that it knows when to play dumb and when not to. Even the most asinine film can be appealing if it doesn't take itself too seriously, and The Bandit doesn't take anything seriously. - Patrick Byrne
