5 of 5 Rock Solid Performance Saturday, April 24, 2004
    A Customer from Pomona NY

I switched to SMC based on reviews of its reliability. This unit did not disappoint. In 6 months I've had to reboot it once. Now have three units around the house (4000 sq ft) and have a good Wi-Fi signal density everywhere,

    5 of 5 WONDERFUL!!! Tuesday, March 02, 2004
    Jason from Melber, Ky
I read the reviews about how some people had great things to say about this router and some hated it. It looked like most of the problems were from people that didn't try or didn't update the firmware. I'm pretty familar with PCs, but this is the first router I have ever installed, let alone a wireless router. The only problem I had with the install was that I had a loose connection and I had to reset my cable modem. Which the setup told me I may have a bad connection and to check them and try it again. I did and it stayed true to its slogan, 3 click install. I only had to look at the detailed manual on the CD once to figure out how to get to the advanced settings, and once I got there it was smooth sailing. I have an old house and many of the inside walls are solid wood with dry wall ontop of that and I have solid wood doors. My wireless card has 4 bar signal rating system. The router is in the middle of my house and when I went to the farthest room away from the router, three rooms away with two doors, two solid wood walls and a brick fireplace in the way I still got 4 bars most of the time, sometimes 3 but either way it was a great signal. I did update the firmware from the advanced setup screen as soon as I got it installed. I would highly recommend the SMC7004VWBR to anyone and everyone. It is a great deal for the money and even if it was more expensive I'd still be satisfied.

2 of 5 Doesn't work at the advertised distances Saturday, November 29, 2003
    Jim from Tacoma, WA
My room is 8 feet up and about 65 feet away with two walls separating the router from my laptop. SMC advertises working distances of hundreds of feet!! The system simply fails to do its job!!! I have the SMC2635W adapter and it it a very poor connection. I have to be within 10 feet of the router in order to have a consistent, reliable connection that mimmicks an actual hard connection to my DSL. I would not recommend this setup, you get what you pay for.

    2 of 5 The wireless doesn't work Friday, August 29, 2003
    A Customer from Western, Ma
The wired part of the router works fine. The wireless freezes up shortly after assigning an IP address for my laptop. Still trying to resolve this issue with SMC.

    3 of 5 Port forwarding(virtual server) problem Saturday, June 28, 2003
    A Customer from Nebraska
This router had a disconnection problem, while I used port fowarding which a file sharing program requires. Netgear also has same problem.

    3 of 5 Buyer Beware Thursday, March 20, 2003
    A Customer from Chicago, IL
This is a good wireless router combination, but only if you do not use the built in firewall. With the Stateful Packet Inspection enabled, you will likely have to reset the device every day. It simply locks up after a while. With SPI disabled it works like a champ.

    5 of 5 Good times Tuesday, March 11, 2003
    Jspafford from Naples, FL
This is the best 802.11b access point/router/switch/firewall on the market for the price. It is one of the few out there with a build in firewall. I have had the SMC for about eight months and have had no problems with it. The range is not amazing, but it works for what I need. I figure that it has a range of about 100ft through the walls of my home. The access point is in a wire closet on the opposite side of the house (5000 sq ft.) from a laptop, and it works fine. This is the only product for broadband sharing I tell any of clients to get. Mainly because of the firewall and how it works with both PC and MAC. Whoohoo to SMC. I just bought another SMC router today for my office, my fourth. Jonthan TV Producer/Network Admin

    5 of 5 great buy Saturday, August 10, 2002
    Peetah from Mountain View, CA
I did what most people warned not to do: buy an access point and PC Card from different manufacturers. All this WiFi stuff is suppose to be compatible, right? Luckily for me, this router works fine with the Orinoco Gold PC card I purchased. I did have to reboot the router sometimes to get the laptop to associate, but that problem went away after I upgraded to the latest firmware on the router. Configuration was a breeze with the clear and friendly browser interface. Surprisingly, this router doesn't provide access control based on MAC address, like Netgear routers. In their defense, MAC based access control is very weak, since MAC address can be spoofed. I love the fact that I can disable management access from the WAN port, which prevents hackers from trying to reconfigure the router. This router is loaded with features and is a great buy.
