I bought the Linksys BFSR41 over a year ago and the SMC Barricade 7004VBR on April 1, 2003 - both from buy.com - buy.com rocks - free shipping option only took 3 days to get here!!!
Pros for SMC Barricade 7004VBR
1. Price after rebate is $27.99 vs. $49.99
2. More features - it gets the time of day from the internet and allows you to block internet access for any connected pc by time which may be useful for parents :-)
3. It is about half the size of the Linksys.
Pros for Linksys BFSR41
1. The LED's flicker to show which PC has Internet traffic on it vs. simply on or off.
2. Does not need to be configured to pass www.symantec.com port scan tests - took some tweaking to get the Barricade to pass
3. It has a higher quality look and feel to it.
Barricade wins on features and price - but be prepared to upgrade your firmware. The Linksys BFSR41 has been around for much longer and its firmware is pretty solid by now. I like both these routers and hope the Barricade continues to work well.

At first, I wasn't sure which brand of router to get, since there is so many competition out there. But after having talked to a IT/Network friend, he recommended SMC. So I bought this one, networked the house, and hooked it up. The setup was very easy using the supplied SMC CD, and was up in less than a minute. Checked all other access points in the house, and no problems. I even easily updated the firmware. Don't let its small size fool you, it's a very nice device. Was this review helpful?

This device does it all, almost everything that a $3000 corporate hardware firewall device would do! Easy to configure, but there could be a bit more explanation for some features. This is one of the first routers I have seen with a statefull firewall. Price can't be beaten, it is less than the older SMC routers which aren't as advanced but do feature a print server and modem connection which this one does not. I was also considering a linksys, netgear, and the Dlink DI-604. None of these devices was as advanced or had as many features, especially the statefull firewall. I highly recommend this router. I had mine up and configured in just minutes and it works great! Was this review helpful?
