Taylor Crothers. | | As seen on TV, Slow Motion gathers a bunch of significant R&B ballads, all of which date from the early '90s through the early 2000s. Most of the tracks were huge hits, dedicated hundreds of times over on radio call-in shows, so they're bound to spark some memories for twenty- and thirtysomethings -- of courtship, prom, breakups, and perhaps the pain of witnessing your girlfriend wear that boneheaded wrestler's letter jacket or catching your boyfriend flirting with that obnoxious cheerleader. Unlike a lot of compilations, some thought was put into the track selections and sequencing, and it obviously serves a purpose beyond enticing consumers with a couple popular songs, only to pad it out with filler. Highlights: Aaliyah's "At Your Best You Are Love," En Vogue's "Don't Let Go (Love)," P.M. Dawn's "I'd Die Without You." One semi-crucial flaw: TLC's "Unpretty" is a strange inclusion, both in theme and in tempo, especially as the concluding track. Did the compilers mean to license "Red Light Special" instead? ~ Andy Kellman | | The 2005 compilation SLOW MOTION collects songs that share the same pace and sensuality, and the same themes of eternal kisses, honey love, and bedroom eyes. The tunes are mostly drawn from a decade earlier, celebrating the soul crooners of the 1990s who were just beginning to explore hip-hop (with Motown influences still strong in their throats), while the lush productions of the 1980s were still glowingly conspicuous. SLOW MOTION basks in diversity, and includes pop-soul singers, rappers, and many others under one roof. | | The track listing for SLOW MOTION contains some of the biggest smashes of the decade, including Boyz II Men's unabashedly weepy and ultimately sweet "End of the Road," and All-4-One's unlikely cover of a country smash, "I Swear" (each of which spent a considerable amount of time atop the pop charts). The compilation also picks out some of the most beautiful melodies of the era, from P.M. Dawn's sparsely affecting "I'd Die Without You" to Babyface's folksy acoustic-guitar ballad "When Can I See You" and TLC's uplifting "Unpretty." | Producer: Michael Anderson; Dean Babin; Michael Anderson (Compilation); Dean Babin (Compilation) |
