5 of 5 SlingBox Rocks. Tuesday, October 31, 2006 JLowe from Jacksonville, FL
Great product, works as advertised. Took just a lil bit of setting up to do, but now I watch TV anywhere I have the internet.
Buy.com was great too. UPS dropped off my package but it was stolen from my front door. Buy.com replaced it within 2 weeks without charging me. Thanks! Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 My best purchase of the year! Saturday, October 28, 2006 A Customer from Arlington, TX
I purchased this product for my two sons who no longer live in our area. With this product attached to our home cable box and internet router our sons can watch their favorite sports teams when their local tv network covers a different team. In addition, I can access my local tv programming whenever I travel. Installation and hookup was easy, and I was very pleased to see that all the necessary cables were included in the package. Video and audio is great! A high-speed connection is necessary otherwise the video will seem choppy. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Best Product for travelers Thursday, October 26, 2006 Morris Dweck from Brooklyn. NY
Using slingbox giving you the ability to Place shift Tv is the best invention to come along for people who travel anywhere. It makes you feel like you are home away from home. Slingbox can be set up in minutes and the software does everything for you. This is my second slingbox because my son who is away at college is always using it to catch his home sports teams. In order to set up second box you do have to do a little more than basic set up. It doesn't ask if you are setting up a second one so you have to manually configure opening up a second port on your router and using a different ip address than the one suggested. For any traveler and especially any sports buff you will never know how you ever did without it once you get it. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Rave review for the Slingbox Monday, October 23, 2006 A Customer from Pittsburgh
This is my second slingbox purchase. I have found the product to be very easy to setup and use. I have called their customer service personnel twice and they were both courteous and helpful. The call was promptly answered. Was this review helpful?

Had no problems at all getting it setup and installed. Worked through my home router to my work with no issues or setup required. Makes the 5 hour backups I have to do monthly on a sunday night a breeze. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 One of the Coolest Gadgets I Own Wednesday, October 18, 2006 A Customer from Dover, DE
I had been looking at this product for a while but the price was too steep. Slingbox has introduced a new generation of Slingboxes so the original has been reduced in price making it worth my investment. I hooked it up according to the directions on the supplied installation poster. Fortunately I had a network switch near my video source. I would have had to pay extra for a set of wireless connection devices if not. Software installation was a snap. There was a firmware upgrade that I applied as part of the initial setup that went smoothly as well. The only negative so far is due to the fact that my router does not have Upnp capability so I have yet to figure out the port forwarding to sling from outside my home. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Performs as Billed Tuesday, October 17, 2006 John from Taipei, Taiwan
Living overseas it is often impossible to find football games and often those that are shown are dubbed into the local language. While back on a business trip I set up the Sling Box and was able to watch my favorite team live this past weekend. Of course I had to get up at 4:00am but I wasn't disappointed.
I might have to upgrade my connection but the full screen quality was not all that bad.
Great product for the price. Set up a little more difficult than expected but can still be done by a novice. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Awesome device!!!! Friday, October 13, 2006 A Customer from Chandler, AZ
I think the Slingbox is worth every penny. I like being able to be away from home and watch my DirecTV anywhere I can hook up my laptop. I have NFL Sunday Ticket from DirecTV and if we are house sitting we can still watch all the football games on Sundays. This really rocks!!! Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 Slingbox works as advertised Thursday, October 12, 2006 A Customer from Redondo Beach, CA
The Slingbox works. Also, you can watch a program on your TV while a remote user watches the same program (e.g. out of town family watching a sporting event that you recorded on your DVR or that is not broadcast in their market). The video image is pretty good, but not perfect (kind of blotchy when viewed full screen). Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 SLINGBOX ROX Thursday, October 12, 2006 BILL from CHICAGOLAND
My sister and brother in law live in China now for his work, and they have braodband internet but poor quality of tv. On his request we bought and installed the Slingbox and Slinglink for them. It was incredibly easy to install, configure and run. He had some issues dowloading the slinglayer from the website (due to Chinese restrictions) but once he did load it he's hooked in! We're now looking at installing a DVR so they can record and watch whatever show's they'd like ANYTIME!
Bottom line - watching cable via the internet is quick, easy and painless with the Slingbox! Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 It does what it says... Wednesday, October 11, 2006 A Customer from Washington state
I used the Slingbox on both DSL and cable connections. The video quality was better than I was expecting. Keep in mind that your Internet router must have "Port Forwarding" capability to use this across the Internet. If you don't have port forwarding, you can only use the Slingbox on your private network, i.e., within the house the Slingbox is installed. Yes, I had to upgrade my router to have the benefits of broadcasting the video across the internet. Overall, I'm very happy with the product. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 AWESOME Wednesday, October 11, 2006 A Customer from Passaic, NJ
This is a remarkable product. I am surprised they are not charging a monthly charge to use it like TiVO.
Very easy to install and operate. The only negative is only one person can control it at a time. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Watch the sporting events you want from anywhere!! Wednesday, October 11, 2006 A Customer from Evanston, IL
I recently moved away from where my favorite football and baseball teams play. I wanted to sign up for Direct TV and get the NFL Sunday Ticket so I could still watch the football games, but Direct TV's customer service and prices were such that it was more a of pain than it was worth to do it. Instead, I ordered a SlingBox, sent it to a buddy's house and now I can watch all of the games without an issue! It's no Sunday Ticket, but it suffices without going to a bar every Sunday and spending tons of $$$. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Slingbox Review Wednesday, October 11, 2006 John Brown from Homosassa Florida
The Slingbox is a great product. It works exactly as advertised. It was very easy to set up and get working. I have used it at home to watch TV on my laptop away from the TV and DVR. I also use it at work and while travelling on vacation.

5 of 5 It works for me! Wednesday, October 11, 2006 Reatha from Los Angeles, CA
Sling Box does just what I needed it to. It was easy to set up and I configured it without having to contact support. I even changed DSL providers and reconfigured my wireless router and it was as easy as pushing a button to reconfigure the Sling Box. In the small window the picture is clear. My only complaint is that the full screen picture is not real great, but since I can control the Tivo if I want to see something on a big screen, I just save it. Was this review helpful?

(apologies to Eddie Murphy and SNL)

I love my Slingbox. It is the perfect addition to a DirecTiVo.

It needs 256Kbps to work well. It’s best if your laptop has video-out, because it’s not easy to find a viewing angle for multiple viewers on a little LCD.

Setup was so easy. Big plaudits to SlingMedia for getting this right; considering the underlying complexities. It’s almost magic!

It serves well out my 256Kbps-outbound cable modem (Slingbox reports it’s getting ~300Kbps). It plays well through my Mom’s 256Kbps-inbound DSL (Not everyone can get 1Mbps).

The on-screen TiVo remote control is great, but the network latency on the remote control packets compounded by the delay of the streaming makes the TiVo fast forward (blip, blip, blip) unuseable. Use the TiVo Easter egg for 30 second skip to re-task the TiVo remote "Quick-Skip" (->|) button (Google "tivo easter egg 30 second skip").

Using Slingplayer at work may be difficult because of your corporate firewall.

5 of 5 Great product, good value, works as described Tuesday, October 10, 2006 A Customer from Bristol, VA
I am very pleased with my purchase of the Slingbox from SlingMedia. The setup was a snap and it had built in integration for my SA 8300 set top box. After a quick configuration I was up and running with no problems.
Quality is good with my upload speed of 384kbps. Generally I get full frames and decent clarity. The sound is always in sink with the picture and the controls are very responsive.
I also purchased the client for Windows Mobile 5 and it works great too.
I am very happy with this unit and would recommend it to anyone with broadband (at least 256k upload), TV, and a love of technology. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Love it! Tuesday, October 10, 2006 A Customer from Lincoln Park New Jersey
This is an amazing product.. works as advertised.. no issues running on my home LAN (CAT5 to the router, wireless to the PC's) cable modem to the WAN. Outstanding video local and remote.
Other reviewers issues seem to be a factor of their ISP. Best was the '2 to 3 second delay' on the remote control response... (the data stream is buffered :)
If I have one complaint.. it's the goofy enclosure.. LOL Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Excellent Technology Tuesday, October 10, 2006 Bob G from Highland, MD
Great product. Hooked up, loaded software, and started working in less than 10 minutes. Slingbox automatically advised to update software and firmware (well guided directions from Slingbox). As a result all my computers and laptops at home are TV monitors able to access all my satellite channels and DVR. You can program ,clean up and manage your DVR from work. I had a friend in FL watch my TV in MD. You can load the Slingbox software on a USB mem stick and watch TV on any computer with broadband( without loading the Slingbox software on that box). The quality of the S-video connection is clearer than component. Overall video quality is better than cable TV, but not as good as satellite (8 out of 10). If you want to transmit in high def, the Slingbox pro is available. Only one viewer per slingbox, but you can log into the Slingbox as the administrator and bump off other viewers. 5 of 5 Slingbox rocks!!!! Monday, October 09, 2006 intenseflipper from Lakewood, CO
Very cool device. Not so easy to setup with Vonage. Finally got it figured out. Picture from TiVo is so so, but coming from Comcast HDDVR is more than acceptable!!!!! Looks good on DVD too. Really cool remote interface mocks your original remote. Using wireless 802.11g at remote location, there is some video pausing/studdering. Very impressive device. Bought it from Buy.com at a great price, couldn't resist. Wouldn't mind getting the Slingbox Pro so I can use it with HIDEF. Plus you can use up to 4 sources with it.

5 of 5 Very Cool. Monday, October 09, 2006 A Customer from New Jersey
It really works. It works best within the wireless network the device is plugged into, but it does everything it claims. Don't waste money on TV cards and USB TV tuners. This little gem turns any computer (or PDA) with a wireless connection into a TV set. Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 Something is better than nothing Monday, October 09, 2006 George from Los Angeles, CA
I have read about this product for some time but I never pulled the trigger. After seeing the price on Buy.com I decided to get it. The installation was not as straightforward on my system I had to manual configure my router so that the slingbox can be accessed. After finally getting the box to work, I installed the software on all of my computers and was able to get a decent picture while on the LAN (local area network). I also accessed my slingbox remotely (we have DSL and the remote location had DSL). Since the upstream on DSL is under 400 kps, the picture was ok but a little fuzzy (quality of video depends upon internet speed) and there was a slight delay in controlling the remote. I also tried accessing the Slingbox at work however I have been unable to get past the firewall even after trying the suggestions at tech support. All things considered, I still am happy that I can control my satellite box and watch my recorded programs on my DVR anywhere with broadband internet access. For those of you who can't watch tv on a small screen (mine is about 5 inches), you may be disappointed since the picture becomes blurry when you expand it to full size. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 excellent Monday, October 09, 2006 Josh from Omaha
This is one of the best purchases I have got in a long time...easy setup...great quality, its just truely amazing considering somehow the stream is higher than my upload which makes me even more happy lol. Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 Fun and a great value Monday, October 09, 2006 Tom from Chicago, IL
This is not a box that everyone NEEDS, but it is one that many want. It is a fun and very cool box, what TIVO did for time shifting and DVR's slingbox is going to do for place shifting, watch it where you want to, not just when you want to. The ultimate set up of this box is with a TIVO, that way you can record your programs and watch them at your time of choosing in your place of choice. At a price of $139 it is a great deal. If you travel and have shows that you want to watch, this is a box your must get. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Work as expected Monday, October 09, 2006 A Customer from Los Angeles, CA
The product works as expected. The quality is good when you have high bandwidth. The software adjusts the video quality based on available bandwidth. I am able to watch TV using the sling player software within the same network (LAN) or remotely from another network i.e. Internet Cafe.
I cannot get the box to work with a Dlink router. But when I connect to a Linksys router (another network), it works right away. You can configure custom port number for remote viewing with password protection.
Overall, it is a great product. After I brought this model, I discover new model has just released (October 2006). I recommend to check slingmedia.com web site for latest product line before you buy. Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 Slingbox Rocks! Monday, October 02, 2006 Mike M. from Arlington, TX
This is the second unit in my household in Texas and I also have one in Charleston, SC. This is absolutely the best value for the money. Works everywhere I have bandwidth. On my phone, my PCs locally and remote. Now that the new units have come out, this is a steal @ $140.00. Oh did I mention that I can login to my Tivos at each location and program, change input selections and even burn or watch DVDs from afar? This thing kicks ass! Was this review helpful?

Works as good as the speed of the connection you are using...higher speed, better streaming. Audio is always good (I use mono sound to save bandwidth). Video can get that ghosty look during action sports with connections in the 300-600 kbs speed. Anything over 1 mbs seems to work flawless. Controls are easy to use...same display as your receiver at home. All in all, when you are overseas, it's great not to have watch soccer or some show with a foreign language. Was this review helpful?

I'm in the Air Force stationed in Turkey and have one of these hooked up to my DirecTV DVR back home in Texas. Now, I see a lot of people say the video quality is okay but not great. All I have to say is that it all comes down to bandwidth. I'm over 8000 miles away from my Slingbox and I get excellent video quality. Mine is connected to a 3.0 Mbps Cox.net cable internet connection through a wireless gaming adapter and I receive it here in Turkey connected at 2.0 Mbps ADSL connection on my HP Laptop. I connect to a 29 inch JVC television using the laptops extended desktop function and it's just like watching TV at home with all the control of sitting in your living room. It even works well when I'm using my ADSL connection with my Vonage internet phone calling back to the states; so I don't even have to disconnect the Slingbox to make a phone call. Bottom line....if you don't have the bandwidth to support it, don't get it. If you do, then ENJOY! Was this review helpful?

This product is great! I have it hooked up to cable in my office and I am able to watch TV at work and school. Everything so far about the product meets my expectations and has fulfilled what Sling Media has promised.
Set-up was a breeze and it guides you through opening ports on your router that is needed for transmission or can do it automatically if your router support UPnP.
I would recommend to anyone! Was this review helpful?

The Slingbox itself is pretty easy to install and configure, but installing it in a wireless network environment is a challenge. You should not attempt a wireless installation unless you are very good with wireless router and wireless bridge configuration. Don't even try it if you don't know what a MAC address is or don't know how to open ports on your network. I just spent 4 hours getting everything working for remote access, and I maintain a wireless network with 3 PCs in my home. Remote access (away from home) is the only reason to have this product in my opinion. Was this review helpful?

My company transfered me to Belgrade Serbia for 3 years and before I left the my home in Pittsburgh PA, I bought and installed the Slingbox on my in-laws Cable/Broadband service and installed the Slingbox receiver on my Broadband connection in Belgrade. The picture quality is very good and the remote allows me to watch several channels of football games just as I would if I was sitting in my home in the US.
Great product and I highly recommend it. Was this review helpful?

I had the Slingbox set up in about 10 min. The quality of the video on my home LAN is very good on my laptop. While on the road, the quality is less but that is because I have DSL (or ADSL) which has a slower upload speed. Still the Slingbox optimizes the signal and displays a decent quality video...even hooked my laptop up to a TV and was like I was watching TV at home...very cool product and a must for those always on the road...remember you do have to have a high speed internet connection on both ends. Product works as advertised. I am streaming to both a Laptop and Smartphone. Video quality is good...but not perfect. Recommend an upload speed ~500k for good quality. Check your upload speed before purchasing. You can only stream to one TV at a time due to copyright issues. New Sling Player allows you to cancel an open stream on another device in case you left one open (nice feature). Sling should investigate better video compression technologies to reduce the minimal upload speed. Recommend connecting Sling to a LAN connection for best quality. Powerline Adaptors will also work but it will cost you another $75. Install is a snap but note that you only have three inputs to use (S-Video, Composite and Coax).
Overall great product and strongly recommend. Was this review helpful?

I actually bought the Slingbox for my sister who lives abroad and it is hooked up to an over the air digital receiver. She was pleasantly surprised by the video and audio quality of the Slingbox and how easy it is to use. I've also tried it myself from a remote location with a laptop on a 1.5 mbps broadband connection and I could attest to my sister's assessment. There was a very minimal but negligible lag when I tested it. Install was a breeze for internal network use but it gets a bit tricky for multiple routers set up. Both routers need to be configured differently to open up the ports for remote access. Audio/video quality with in my network is excellent! Although a mid to high end video card is recommended, it is not required to get a clear picture. The only thing I would have liked to work better is the desktop remote controller as it takes about 2-3 sec to recognize and execute the commands. Other than that, the Slingbox is not too shabby especially for the Buy.com price I paid.

I am pleased that I am able to watch my home cable box and DVR someplace besides home! The Slingbox optimizes the video stream for the best picture at the avilable speed. If our corporate network is really busy, the Slingbox slows down rather than demanding already scarce network resources. Our IT people are usually on top of anything out of the ordinary but I've been running this for months with no questions or complaints. I'm amazed it works at all through my home firewall and especially the corporate firewall! How does it do that?? I DO WISH I COULD GET CLOSED CAPTIONING ON IT, hint hint. Was this review helpful?

It was very easy to set-up and use, worked fine in two diferent locations 30 miles away from the source, the only thing was video quality (like watching an internet video) but it was ok, we watched a soccer game over a friends house and nobody was dissapointed. We were both on the same cable provider. hope it's video quality will be improved on it's next generation release. Was this review helpful?

This is such a great device, although tech-wise there's lot more that should've been done. Video quality is so-so, but beggars can't be choosers. I've primarily use this to watch Satellite TV off a friend's house who lives a couple of blocks from our place and we both have the same Cable internet provider so we should be streaming high quality video... but no, I guess the highest quality it could go is just about 400KBps... but worse off, it's using Windows Media Codecs thereby having noticable full-screen blocks/artifacts if I want to watch the feed in full screen. My computer setup has a bit of config problem with playing WMV files (Beeps and squeaks during net latency) and it is apparent when watching using SlingMedia (doesn't happen in my other computer though)... DSL Internet in some countries aren't fast enough (I tried installing the Slingbox in the Philippines and video quality was way too crappy with a 100KBps upload stream so I had to bring back here in Canada) Anyway, there's still room for improvement for a V2.0 like DIVX compression, a transmitter/receiver setup (Slingbox transmit using high encoding hardware while a counterpart receiver has a matching decoding hardware enabling better compression/quality), built-in video file server (if you want high quality video, it would just encode the video to a file for you to download)... Easy to install, works well, only complaint: video quality was not as good as I hoped(using broadband connection). Overall great product for gizmo nerds. =) Was this review helpful?
