4 of 5 iPhone Users Take Note Tuesday, November 03, 2009 A Customer from Sooner Country, Oklahoma
I have the previous version of this box that is now discontinued, the Slingbox AV. I use it everyday and can't imagine how it was before. I highly recommend the Slingbox, but two things to watch for. Make sure to do a speed test and insure you have enough upload bandwidth to meet the minimum requirement specified for the Slingbox otherwise the picture quality will be degraded. If you plan on running this on an iPhone (or iPod Touch), the app store (and Slingmedia site) charges $29.99 for the iPhone version of the player. It is not a free download as it is for other devices. For this I gave it a 4 for overall satisfaction. Also if you are running file-sharing software on the same internet connection it can degrade the performance of the Slingbox. Turn the file-sharing software off before leaving home or you may not get usable performance. Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 Easy to install Monday, March 16, 2009 A Customer from Stansbury Park , UT
THis is by far the easiest tech product I have ever installed. Make sure you READ and FOLLOW the enclosed directions. The technical support is superior and the online guide for setting up your modem with the box works flawlessly. I was truley amazed at how easy this was. THey are very clear on the fact that you will only be able to plug in Component video. I use it with a Dish 622 HD receiver. MY HDMI cable goes directly into my TV and my component cables pass through the Sling Solo and into my DVD then into the TV. If you get a jerky picture it is because of the speed of your internet connection. Also make sure you understand that if you are using this remotely then anyone at home has to watch what you are watching. Receiver is either controled by someone at home or remotely with sling, NOT BOTH> I even went to a friends house in another state and used it. I did though have to call tech support to help me set it up with another computer that I had not originally used when home. If you remember to bring the ID from your sling box when you travel, then you can do the set up on any computer. I am waiting anxiously for Sling to support the itouch. Word is it will happen sometime this spring. It worked the first time and buy.com gave great service with shipping. Thanks

3 of 5 Great if working, but... Thursday, February 26, 2009 A Customer from Manalapan, NJ
Now that it is up and going, everything is great so far, except for the color balance being way off and I do not know how to fix that (I will call their excellent customer service). However, getting it started was no easy feat. If you are not plugging directly into your router you MUST have something like the SlingLink, or this thing is just a paperweight. I also discovered that you will not get any video feed (audio is fine) if you use an HDMI cable with the television where you have located the SOLO. That means I must remember to unplug the HDMI cable from my cable box before I leave the house if I am planning to use the Slingbox. Not particularly convenient or thoughtful on their part, since HDMI is now the standard with the large flatscreen TVs. Also, one thing that is not made clear at the Buy.com site and is only found several layers down at the SlingBox site, is that this is not designed to work with Vista 64-bit. Well, that is the laptop I bought it for! It actually does work but the picture can be jerky. I would not have purchased this if it said upfront that it only really worked with Vista 32-bit. Like the HDMI cable thing, this is a little surprising to me, since it seems to be where the future is going. Just state it upfront! Finally, setting it up to use remotely was actually impossible for me. It would not recognize my router and no matter what I tried I could not set it up. I had to give control of my computer to Customer Service and it even took them quite awhile to figure it all out. Customer Service was fantastic every time I called and it is what stopped me from packing everything (SOLO and SlingLink) and sending it back in extreme frustration. Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 Great so far! Saturday, December 13, 2008 Tom from Austin Texas
Bought this to allow access to TV when I'm on the road. Haven't yet taken a trip so the ultimate test has yet to come. However, Price was great at buy.com, setup was easy and it works perfectly on my home net. I can take my laptop outside or to the garage and watch Football. Good product, good support. 5 of 5 It's exactly what I was looking for! Monday, December 01, 2008 tdblja from Ellicott City, Md
It took a little bit of computer knowledge to get the security settings right. During set up it kept telling me that it needed an internet connection, which I had, just slingbox couldn't get through. Tech support told me about a conflict with symantec. I just disabled live update and go online once a week or so and download updates manually. Wal-lah... Being able to have my TV at work is worth it to me. Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 SlingBox rocks my Sox Friday, November 21, 2008 jedicheetah from Bothell, WA
Great product. One of the best values for the dollar vs. what it brings technologically. One time cost and from here on out you get to watch your TiVo shows from any Internet well-connected hotel room in the world.
Make sure when you check into your hotel that you request a room close to their wireless modem. If you get a weak signal (i.e. 1-2 bars) on a wireless network, you won't be able to connect to your SlingBox.
The video quality is more than decent considering the connection.
Be sure to follow the instructions exactly when you set up your SlingBox. Some of the step-by-step instructions may be a little off, but I was able to figure it out just using some common sense and observation.
Buy this product and you shouldn't be sorry. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 A very cool idea for the college kid who went away Friday, October 31, 2008 Grant from Pittsburgh PA
Son #2 decided to attend university 400 miles from where he grew up, and being a typical sports minded kid, missed the hometown teams...solution is slingbox! Since my router was in a distant part of the house, this also require purchase of the "turbo". Total set up time was 45, made more difficult due to the limited number of wall outlets (turbo requires direct plug, no extentions). The instructions were good enough and the result is a happy #2 son. The only drawback is that he can now control the cable box from UKY dorm while we both watch, so ground rules needed to be established. Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 Slingbox rocks Wednesday, October 22, 2008 Saša from Lincoln, NE
It's worth it..Don't make the mistake of thinking you can set it up thru a DVD player like I did..You can, but you will be watching DVD's only..you need a cable or satellite box to watch TV channels..Only one person can watch and change channels at a time, remember that Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Slingbox Solo Monday, October 20, 2008 Cjanzivno from Milwaukee WI
I would like to say that this product works great, but I would like to help any would be buyers about some crucial information before purchase. First, anyone that owns a dish network box Vip 322, the slingbox IS compatible, you just need to use the vip 311 code and hook into the TV 1 input located on the back of your receiver. Second, for remote viewing, your home location (where you slingbox is setup) needs to have great upload speeds from your ISP (internet service provider). when your slingbox is connected to your home network (LAN) the picture will look great only because you are downloading your picture, remote viewing on the other hand is different. in order for your remote viewing access to be worth while you WILL need good upload speed otherwise the picture will be lousy. on the remote access end, your download speed is all that matters. note, my upload speed originally at my home location was 490, and the picture was really bad on remote viewing but excellent when i was on the home network. I upgraded my home location to 1000kbps upload speed and now the remote viewing is excellent. In sum, great investment, but beware of your home location upload speed, otherwise you will be disappointed. before purchase do a speed test and look to your upload speed at your home location to make sure you will have a satisfactory picture. Enjoy. Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 Great Product Monday, October 13, 2008 A Customer from Falls Church, VA
Product works very well it allows one to watch TV anywhere in the world. Standard definition seems to work a little better than HD when NOT on the local network. Supposedly the HD is downscaled to regular definition.

5 of 5 Instead of paying Comcast Monday, October 13, 2008 greg from Chicago, IL
monthly for another cable box & hookup, I connected this to my TV/DVR and now have another "TV" I can carry around my house and even watch on my deck. OF NOTE: Don't use with anything less then wireless G. My Slingbox is connected wirelessly using a Linksys bridge and Linksys wireless network. Set-up using matched brand equipment was trouble free. HD channels are down-sampled for transmission over the net so they appear the same as other channels. I sometimes experience lag on shows with lots of motion full screen. Overall, really great product. I can't believe how well it works. Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 Awesome Product!!! Monday, October 13, 2008 A Customer from Greenville, SC
This product works exactly as you would hope. Very easy to set up and full of features. I use it to watch football while not in my media room. The only negative comment I can say is that when I am watching a lot of fast moving graphics (like football) the Slingbox can throw more streaming data than a wireless connection can carry. This means that movies are good over wireless (less fast graphics), but football can get get choppy if your wireless connection is anything less than "Excellent". Kind of a bummer when watching from my hammock. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Slingbox is great Saturday, October 11, 2008 Ed from Lubbock, Tx
Worth every penny. Ordered it off Buy.com and got it the very next day. Very easy to use. If you plan to watch Slingbox on your phone, make sure you have a high speed internet connection or else it's very choppy. I have free roaming and I'm able to roam onto a 3g network and it works great. I have the Slingbox Solo. I plugged my Tivo into the Slingbox and I'm able to watch my cable and recorded shows...basically getting two audio/visual sources on the one Slingbox imput. Very happy with this. 4 of 5 Works well, eaiser to install than previous models Saturday, October 11, 2008 A Customer from Ventura, CA
I purchased the Slingbox Solo to replace my older Slingbox AV. Installing and using the Solo was much easier then the AV. The updated software makes for a simpler install, it even programs your router to give the Solo priority over other functions. Non technical people may be unable to install the Solo by themselves but Customer Service is very helpful and can talk you through it.
The Picture quality over the internet is not HD quality but is viewable for drama and comedy, fast moving sports and action are blurred. I have used it accross the US and while visiting Europe to view live TV and recorded TV from my DVR. If you travel frequenty this product is a must.

5 of 5 Exactly as described. Thursday, October 09, 2008 Sean from Denver, CO
If you are a sports fan and travel a lot or don't live in the city of the team you want to follow, this is the perfect device for you. I am from Philadelphia but live in Denver. I am a devoted Philly sports fan. I sent the slingbox to my mother's house and we set it up in her spare bedroom. Its as simple as plugging in a few wires and running an install CD. Slingbox also has live chat to walk you through any troubleshooting. I highly recommend this product. Was this review helpful?

4 of 5 Satisfying SlingBox Wednesday, October 08, 2008 Mark L. from Fullerton, CA
Opened the package and looked simple enough. Which it was. Had some trouble with the av and video cables at first but just played around with it. Easy to set up on the router. I watch it home near the pool with the laptop and watch at my office not great quality but my home uploads around the 400 kbs. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Good alternative to extra cable or satellite unit Wednesday, October 08, 2008 Bob W. from Greensboro, NC
These reviews have always helped me so here goes - Using with DirecTV box to watch on office networked PC. Also nice to watch on WiFi laptop around the house although quality suffers slightly but is satisfactory. Easy auto setup with install disk and has web SW updates. Usefull with outside WiFi access. Well designed unit at a good Buy.com price. What's not to like. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Truely Awesome Saturday, September 27, 2008 Brian A from New Castle, PA
This is probably the coolest thing I have ever purchased. Setup is painless. About less than an one minute for actually hands on out of the box. About 15 mins. to install on your computer and Router config. But they walk you through every step of the way. After that its just plain AWESOME. I love watching the game on my Sprint Mogul when I am not home. Works so so on my Laptop. But its old and I have found its the video card that is the problem with the poor video quality. Tried it on a friends LT thats about 2 yrs old and works fine even with a wireless signal. You definitely have to get one if you are a Tech Junkie like myself. You will be very happy you did. 1 of 1 customers found this review helpful. 5 of 5 Fantastic Product! Friday, September 12, 2008 A Customer from New York, NY
This is a great product! I normally don't take the time to review - but just have to say this is definitely one of the best products I've recently bought. Setup was seamless, it provides many many cable box codes to control your cable box (I have the Scientific Atlanta 3250HD) which even BeyondTV does not have, video quality is good (not perfect, but very watchable)
I have been traveling abroad for work for the past two months, and this would've been great to have when all I could get on TV was CNN World! Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Excellent product Tuesday, September 09, 2008 A Customer from Annapolis Maryland
The slingbox solo is an absolutely great product. It was very easy to setup. I had it up and running in about 20 minutes. I am no techie. The product functions perfectly. I receive all the the channels on my cable TV including HD channels very clearly on my desktop and notebook computers. The notebook computer has a 1GH processor with 1GB of memory shared with the video. My only complaint is that I think it is unfair that Slingbox charges for the software if you want to view TV on your smartphone. I have not had to use customer support. Overall, I am very pleased. 5 of 5 My favorite tech toy of all time! Thursday, September 04, 2008 fix-it lady from Cocoa, FL
Wondered how well this would work, and was very pleasantly surprised. Ran speed tests on my uplink cable internet speed, avg of 385. I have slightly above avg experience with HW and SW - installation on my new (confusing) Vista PC was easy, even though I ran into a couple snags. Sling tech support was very quick to reach, very knowledgeable, lead me through a fix quickly, and I even learned a lot in the process! Installed flawlessly on my Palm Centro, my main usage. Very clear picture.
Can hardly wait until they release something for the TV!
I received my Solo from Buy.com very quickly with Standard shipping, best price around! Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 Excellent Product Wednesday, September 03, 2008 A Customer from Langhorne, PA
I've been looking to get a Sling Box for a few years now. Buy.com had the price that made it a done deal. The box was easy to set up and it works great. I was initially concerned that it would not work with Verizon's FiOS but it works perfectly. Even the onscreen remote looks identical to the actual VZ remote and all of the functionality works the same. Highly recommended. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 outstanding product! Wednesday, August 27, 2008 A Customer from 91709
Great if you watch a lot of tv. I bought it so that I could watch Beijing Olympics while I'm on the road traveling. The quality is great. The setup is super easy except it misses one step in instruction which to connect the output cable to your TV input. No biggie, I figure that out. Overall, it's a buy. Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 Good Product Monday, August 11, 2008 JupiterJoe from Jupiter, Florida
If you want to be able to watch TV anywhere this is the product. I liked Sony's product just as well but unfortunately it does not support mobile phones very well. The biggest issue I have with this product is that the video quality on a computer suffers when there is limited bandwidth available. I am using a DSL connection and as such the quality of the video when played from a remote location is not that great due to the limitations of DSL and its slower uploading rate... but overall a good product. The product works really well on mobile phones as the smaller screen size hides the above mentioned quality issues...
The setup of the product is very easy - and can be done by most novices. The user software has a very nice user interface and I like the fact that the remote control actually looks like the remote control that came with my satellite receiver!

5 of 5 Very Fun Device Monday, August 04, 2008 A Customer from Garden Grove, CA
I had a little bit of a problem setting up the Slingbox. My first attempt setting up the device for remote access did not work. I think the Slingbox may not have been able to talk to my DLink router. I set up the Slingbox using the manual configuration, and it worked on the second attempt. The Slingmedia Player works very well. I like having the favorite buttons available to switch quickly to my favorite channels on at&t U-verse. I currently use the device inside the house so that I can avoid renting multiple U-verse boxes. I hope it works well for remote access from our second home. (I haven't had a chance to check this out yet) Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 We Love This Thing!!! Monday, August 04, 2008 Don B. from Woodstock, Georgia
I bought this thing for my wife, she wanted to be able to watch the DirecTV HD DVR in the office while she was scrapbooking. The setup was extremely simple, I hooked it up using the component video connection, placed the IR controller on the HD receiver, ran the network cable to a Netgear WGPS 606 PrintServer/Switch, installed and setup software, and boom, it worked no problems at all. The quality is great, the remote-control functions work perfectly, it just works. I haven't set it up for Internet access yet, but I think I will try that soon and if there are any issues, I will update this review. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 All you need to "sling" from one device Thursday, July 31, 2008 TravisGood from Reston, VA
I had a Slingbox previously but a lightning strike totaled it. For me, the magic was already proven: "Yes, amazingly it is possible to get your home video content sent to you over the Internet and it's perfectly watchable." I needed more magic; I needed to replace my fried Slingbox.
When I considered what to buy I was impressed by the multiple input and outputs of this model. I'm recently upgraded to HD and the mix of hardware I have runs the gamut of outputs from composite through HDMI. This Slingbox could handle almost all of it (but not HDMI). I have it now working with a TiVo HD using component wiring.
It's all working smoothly and I can easily recommend this product. It's magic. Was this review helpful?

4 of 5 Great product! Saturday, May 24, 2008 A Customer from Cincinnati, OH
It was super easy out of the box to setup (as other people mentioned). Product works as advertised but...my internet service in Cincinnati promised 7MB download and 500K upload (NOT SO, TimwarnerCable stinks). The SlingBox transfer rate is 200K because of my cable service and therefore the picture is choppy, and yes I tried to mess with the settings to get a better picture. When I operate it from my home in Ann Arbor it works great! Moral of the story, you need a good internet connection. Overall, great product and TimewarnerCable stinks! Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Satisfied customer Friday, May 16, 2008 tonykurkov from Rocky River, OH
I tried my SOLO first with Lynksys G-wireless bridge recommended by Slingmedia. Got about 1200 Kbps on my G-LAN network. Not good enough for full screen viewing. With SlingLink power-line ethernet got about 5500 Kbps with full-screen and highest resolution setting. Very good picture even for basketball game. Super price and service from buycom. 5 of 5 SlingBox Solo delivers Saturday, April 19, 2008 A Customer from Anaheim CA
I wasn't sure if I would like having this product, but it turned out to be very handy. Over my wired network it delivers remote HD from my satellite box to my 30" monitor and looks quite good, even in full-screen mode! Haven't yet tried remote access from wi-fi, but even just here at home it's providing a good function. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Pretty cool way to watch TV Saturday, April 19, 2008 dug7714 from Mount Rainier, MD
All-in-all it was a fairly easy setup and I'm happy with the Slingbox. It's a great idea and allows me to watch all my TV channels and DVR when I'm on the road.
I did, however, have to make some changes at home...
First, I had the cheapest DSL package from Verizon, so I had to upgrade in order to get a better upload speed (you need at least 256kbps). I also decided to wire a new phone jack near my TV (spend the $ and just buy the SlingLink if you don't want to do this). Then I moved my DSL modem and wireless router to that location. Once I made those changes, I was ready to go.
The Slingbox works well at home and on the road, but I have to say it's better at home. The picture quality is very good around the house on my wireless network; I can flip the computer open when I'm sitting on the porch and it looks great. But, when I am in a hotel or at the office (really... I just 'tested' it there), the picture quality isn't as good. I'm not sure if that's a limitation of my DSL upload speed at home (still only 768kbps) or general internet limitations. The picture quality is noticeably better at home.
Setup was easy once I used the Sling interactive support. They took control of my computer and changed the settings in my router and DSL modem in a few minutes. Worked like a charm. Don't hesitate to use the interactive support on their website if you're having any problems.
It's a very cool product. Worth the money!

5 of 5 Great Product - NOT EASY TO SET UP! Saturday, March 01, 2008 Jrmovie from New York, N.Y.
This is a great product, I love it! A real must have for tech geeks like myself. One warning, it is not as easy to set up as they claim. I am pretty adept at new technologies and could not get to work, needed customer service.
The technician was terrific and very patient. He had to take control of my computer from his office to finish set up. He also helped with my mobile. Once running it really is everything they claim.
To recap, Buy it but plan to spend an hour with a tech.

I've seen Slingbox in action and it is very impressive. However, while I'm very adept at hooking up electronics, this one is quite a challenge. After trying for days to figure out how to hook it up, I discovered that unless your television and router are in the same room, you have to buy another piece of equipment to get the signal. I did buy this SlingLink and found it so difficult to figure out that I decided to chuck the whole thing. I should also mention that there are required cables that are not included with the Slingbox. Add to this, Buy's unrealistic return policy of returning within 14 days, I was able to return the SlingLink but not the Slingbox - so I'm stuck with it. All in all, a very unsatisfactory experience. I have a netgear ethernet network (using the home electrical system). Set-up took 10 minutes and I didn't need support from Slingbox. I can access and control my television inside or outside my home. I am shocked how good the picture is even when the broadband is slow. Quality of the picture ultimately depends on speed of your connection. I have connected on PC's and Mac's and even connected on my Treo (which was amazingly good quality). When I travel, I like to be able to watch my local sports teams. I would highly recommend this to all. Was this review helpful?

I received my Slingbox SOLO from buy.com the day after Christmas. No, it wasn't a Present! I hooked it up as stated in the manual. I was unable to get it to work after 2 days trying. I finally called Slingbox support. The Tech had me give him control of my computer through Remote Assistant. Ended up I only had to unplug the Slingbox, wait 30 seconds and plug it back in. Everything was already set up correctly.
Slingbox does not support Verizon Motorola QIP2500-3 Cable Box or the ActionTec MI424WR Router supplied by Verizon FIOS. The Slingbox does work, it's just that Slingbox doesn't support them yet. They are both still fairly new because Verizon FIOS is fairly new.
The Slingbox TV worked fine on my home network but wouldn't connect on other networks. I had to go into my Router Utilities and play around with the settings to get it to work on other networks. I would say that the Slingbox instruction Manual, the Slingbox Wizard and the online support need some work. They made the setup sound really easy, but of course if you don't know much about networking you'll run into some trouble. Overall a great product, just setup instructions need help! 5 of 5 Slingbox Solo Tuesday, January 01, 2008 Dwight from Irvington, NJ
This product works fine. Setup was pretty easy, although it kept telling me that it couldn't be reached from the internet. I skipped that part, and it was actually working. I use it to control my Comcast DVR. My only "complaint" is that there is no way to add functionality to the remote the way that I can do with the real remote. Was this review helpful?

It took me half an hour to install and configure the slingbox. The instruction is simple. The product works great. I'm happy with the product. Was this review helpful? Click here to see all 68 reviews
