| | | Personalized Radio
It starts with the Slacker Radio service. Slacker has developed a highly personalized Internet Radio service, with over 2 million songs, organized into over 100 professionally programmed stations, 10,000 artist stations, and an unlimited number of personally created stations. You can continue to evolve any of these stations to match your tastes over time by rating your favorite songs and banning artists or songs you don't like. You can even fine tune your stations to play older or newer music, more hits or more eclectic music, or to help you discover more artists. The Slacker Radio service is now licensed by all 4 major labels and thousands of independent labels and music publishers, creating a vast library of music varied enough for even the most eclectic radio stations.
Everywhere You Go
While we believe Slacker is the world's best Internet Radio service, the real breakthrough is that it's now completely portable.
Choose your Stations
You can choose up to 40 of your favorite Slacker Radio stations to play on your Slacker Portable at any time, depending on the model you purchase. To get you started, we'll ship your Slacker Portable with your favorite 10 stations, but it's easy to switch radio stations in and out of your device at any time.
Play Them Everywhere
The Slacker Portable automatically connects to the extensive Slacker music library over Wi-Fi when in wireless range, or over USB when attached to an Internet connected PC. Instead of live streaming of songs, the Slacker Portable quickly fills itself up with personally selected music each time you connect. The players hold up to 4,000 CD quality songs that are continuously refreshed to match your tastes and the radio stations you play. This means you don't need a continuous connection to play Slacker Radio on your player. Since the Slacker radio stations play from the music library on your device, you can play them everywhere go you - even when you're not connected.
For the Best Radio Experience Anywhere
Patent pending DJ technology inside the Slacker Portable uses the same station mixing rules perfected by radio DJs over decades, so you get the benefits of great radio programming, along with personally selected music and complete portability.
For Free
While you have to buy the player for portability, the Slacker Basic Radio service is completely free. All the features of Slacker Radio are permanently available in the Slacker Portable at no charge. For those that want even more control over their radio, Slacker also offers Premium Radio for as low as $7.50 per month. Premium Radio includes all the features of Basic Radio, and adds unlimited skipping, and the ability to save radio songs to the library on your Slacker Portable and play them whenever you want.

I own a slacker (4gb) and love it more than my Zune. The first time you try to synch it, only synch 1 "station" because the firmware updates after the station synch. Pretty dumb if you ask me, because you'd think it would do the firmware check first.
So when you first set it up:
1. Synch 1 station (like Top Hits)
2. Wait until it says that all stations have been synched
3. Shutdown the slacker and restart it
4. Add your additional stations Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Love my Ipod - Love Slacker even more Friday, September 04, 2009 A Customer from Cedar Rapids, Iowa
While the interface isn't nearly as user friendly as the Ipod, the ability to add stations customized to your tastes is awesome. The music is free and after refreshing stations your music library is always current. If Slacker radio was marketed to it's strengths vs the Ipod, this nation would truly be a nation of Slackers. As a 50 year old, I found working the radio a little confusing but, I stuck w/ it and got it. I have a Mac, so I am not able to use all the features. None the less, the sound is great and works with the car radio ( with cord). This is great when there is no radio reception available. I like it. The customization aspect is FANTASTIC. I can have my Lou Reed along with a Big Band station. There is some pretty eclectic stuff available. Was this review helpful?

I've never owned satellite radio because I've never been impressed with my friends satellite radio. With satellite radio, you lose reception in parking garages, tunnels, and maybe even a cloudy day or bad weather? With this device, you get a similar but better experience than satellite radio. I get to pause and skip songs which is crucial experience changing add-on, IMO. Also, you can play your MP3s, WMAs. I've used the pay service by Launchcast/Yahoo for a four years now and the free service by Slacker is very close. This is the first generation player...some of the buttons are not laid out well such as the heart/hate buttons...sometimes i push them by accident. The only other complaint I have is the battery life is a little short--i've been getting about 5 hours on a new battery. The menus are very simple, straight-forward, and easier to learn. Setup for me took a few easy minutes. The screen is large and you really appreciate it when you are reading the bio's for the artists or just navigating around the large font menu items. I've owned and loved my Ipod Touch but this device gives me a way to hear and explore new and fresh music that I may not have heard before--the other key feature that I really like. The software after its auto-upgrade seems to be fairly stable but the computer processor inside is a little slow. Downloads take a long time which isn't a problem if you are at home but if you are in an airport or hotspot, don't expect to update all your stations. On the other hand, I have not been able to exhaust the music yet even after a few sittings. I am very happy with this purchase since I got it on sale here at buy.com!! Was this review helpful?

the concept is like taking Sirius XM with you. There are lots of channels to choose from on the website. I have had problems updating the channels. Each channel updates and the process hangs requiring rebooting the thing and starting the connect-and-update process again. Was this review helpful?

I like the Slacker player because you don't have to own any of the music and the variety played is better than FM for sure. This player has a nice sized screen that works well enough for this product; it isn't as nice as on an iPod, but it looks good enough. Firmware is acceptable but not bullet-proof--some quirks still exist. Overall, this player does what I want: play lots of music for little money. Was this review helpful?

The portable player is simply great. Sound quality perfect. The controls are quick to master. The radio stations included have a great selection of music. Then it gets better, you can easily make your own custom stations. I like hearing new music, finding new bands. I am completely done with standard radio playing repeated garbage. I don't have time to search through endless mp3s "bands and songs" on itunes or hunting for something new on the internet. Just create a new station with your fav bands and set the DJ feature to discover new stuff. You can then ban/fav the song simply by press the button on the side. You will feel like you have a personal DJ on the radio playing just for you. It reminds me of listening to the radio for the first time not just hearing it. As a bonus you get to read reviews and info about the artist and album, now playing. The only con i have is that the touch switch is a little to sensitive which i turned off and use the easier to use thumb control wheel. The display bright, clear and colorful. Controls simple. Easy to setup. Even wifi to update your music collection on the go. They start around $200 bucks and go up. Even better the service is free. Was this review helpful?

The other review is older, I'm guessing he/she was having problems with the old firmware. I had some problems loading up my music before the new firmware installed. The device installs it for you automatically so it's no hassle for you. I love my Slacker Portable (I'm listening to it right now). If you're familiar with the Slacker online service you know how great it is at playing music that you love. I get to listen to songs that I like, new and old, everywhere.
I love how it gives you the artist biography and an album review for each song it puts on the player. It's really interesting to read the back stories to some of your favorite artists, and I find it very fun to read up on bands that I haven't heard of after I discover a song that they play.
I am using the basic service now but plan on upgrading to the premium service within the next day or two. The basic service plays ads, but trust me, it doesn't play many ads AT ALL (in fact, it seems to play much fewer ads than the online service does). I have listened to this thing for HOURS, and I only recall hearing one ad this entire time. And it wasn't even an ad, it was just some girl talking about Usher's name for like 20 seconds.
The Slacker Portable is truly an amazing music experience that you just can't get anywhere else. I've discovered so many new songs and artists through it. It really is a must for a music junkie. I can't possibly recommend it enough.
(p.s. GREAT gift idea!) Was this review helpful?

This device should still be in beta. Repeats the same music over and over. Not satisfied and now trying to figure out how to return it. Was this review helpful?
