 Editor's Note
In writer-director Kerry Conran's debut film, ace pilot Joe "Sky Captain" Sullivan (Jude Law) reluctantly teams up with his former flame, journalist Polly Perkins (Gwyneth Paltrow), to uncover the mystery behind a group of missing scientists and a series of shocking robot attacks. Aided by gadgetry whiz Dex Dearborn (Giovanni Ribisi) and enigmatic military commander Franky Cook (Angelina Jolie), Joe and Polly must find out who is responsible for an increasingly elaborate scheme that may trigger the end of the world. A highly stylized, mostly computer-generated spectacle, SKY CAPTAIN AND THE WORLD OF TOMORROW is a striking cinematic achievement. Steeped in the marvelous visuals of 1930s pop culture, Conran's movie is a loving tribute to that era, featuring clever nods to FLASH GORDON, BUCK ROGERS, and other adventure serials of the time. Beginning in a gloriously slate-gray, towering New York City, this movie follows its heroes from one intriguing locale to the next. Although the remarkable images of the film threaten to eclipse the characters at times, SKY CAPTAIN is very well cast, with the actors pitch-perfect for their respective roles, particularly the luminous Paltrow and the brainy Ribisi. And yet the stunning retro-futuristic design is always at the fore, making for a wonderfully unique movie.

| | Professional Reviews | Movieline's Hollywood Life "[A] high-flying, retro-cool adventure extravaganza..." 09/01/2004 p.116New York Times "SKY CAPTAIN charms as well as impresses....A landmark in computer-generated imagery..." 09/17/2004 p.E14 Los Angeles Times "[The] visuals definitely have the capacity to surprise." 09/17/2004 p.E1 Entertainment Weekly "[T]he confection is irresistible: three of Hollywood's most polished stars, assuming the contours of 2-D characters without irony or condescension." 09/24/2004 p.77-8 Chicago Sun-Times "It's like a film that escaped from the imagination directly onto the screen, without having to pass through reality along the way." 09/17/2004 p.33 Uncut "[A] beautifully realised slice of classic pulp adventure." 11/01/2004 p.148 Sight and Sound "There are nice visual touches..." 11/01/2004 p.67-8 ReelViews 8 of 10 Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow is about 70% style and 30% substance. It has a plot and characters, but those are almost beside the point. They are devices that function as hooks upon which first-time director Kerry Conran can hang his amazing visuals. Generally speaking, I'm not a big fan of style-over-substance movies, but this one is so gorgeous that it's possible to become literally lost in the richness of the images. In many ways, that's not a bad thing, because the story isn't exactly airtight...The bottom line is that Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow is fun to watch, even if you don't care about the visual style or Conran's affinity for old movies and serials. There's a Raiders of the Lost Ark quality to the action and cliffhangers, and in the way that humor is used to offset tension... - James Berardinelli Chicago Sun-Times 10 of 10 "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow" is even more fun than it sounds like. In its heedless energy and joy, it reminded me of how I felt the first time I saw "Raiders of the Lost Ark." It's like a film that escaped from the imagination directly onto the screen, without having to pass through reality along the way..."Sky Captain" is filmed halfway between full color and sepia tone, so that it has the richness of color and yet the distance and nostalgic quality of an old photograph..."Sky Captain" will probably not inspire the universal affection of a film like "Indiana Jones," in part because Steven Spielberg is a better director than Kerry Conran, in part because many of "Sky Captain's" best qualities are more cinematic than dramatic; I responded to the texture and surfaces and very feel of the images, and felt some of the same quickening I remember from the cover of a new Tom Corbett book. - Roger Ebert
