| | Black Label Society, is the brainchild of guitar great Zakk Wylde. Hard and heavy, big on riffs and even bigger on the solos, BLS is the bastard child of Black Sabbath only pumped up on steroids. Having graced the world’s stages for the last 18 years, both as Ozzy Osbourne’s right hand man as well as fronting BLS, Zakk Wylde has established himself as one of the few remaining guitar heroes.
Skullage is the history of Black Label Society throughout the years. This compilation arrives in stores several weeks before the re-issue of nearly the entire Zakk Wylde / Black Label Society catalog.
| | Album Notes and Credits | Notes & Personnel Info | | Zakk Wylde proved himself beyond capable as Ozzy Osbourne's longtime guitarist. Starting as a teenage prodigy, he rapidly edged himself up the ladder as one of heavy metal's top shredders. And his long-running project, Black Label Society, founded in 1998, gives Wylde a platform to shine in every aspect, to the point where he played every instrument but the drums on the early releases. SKULLAGE is a comprehensive retrospective of Wylde's heavy take on traditional, fat-free heavy metal. Southern-inflected songs like "Machine Gun Man" and "Dead as Yesterday" exist comfortably next to nimble shred-fests like the howling "Doomsday Jesus" and "13 Years of Grief." Additionally, the album includes several acoustic takes on BLS songs, including "Stillborn," that display Wylde's increasingly confident singing and melodic sense. As a package summing up a decade-plus career in ear-splitting guitar wizardry, SKULLAGE succeeds magnificently. | | With nine albums issued rapid-fire style over an eight-year span (1999 to 2006), the time was certainly right for a Black Label Society compilation. And in 2009, it arrived in the form of the CD/DVD double-disc, Skullage. Included are standouts from all of the Black Label Society releases, as well as a tune each from Zakk Wylde's pre-BLS projects, Pride & Glory, and his 1996 solo album, Book of Shadows, plus live tracks. Throughout it all, Skullage certainly shows off the six-string talents of the Wylde one, especially on such BLS favorites as "Doomsday Jesus" and "Suicide Messiah," as well as "Stillborn" (which features vocals from none other than Ozzy Osbourne), and the mellow sounds of "Won't Find It Here." Add to it a DVD of video clips and live performances, and you have both the perfect career overview for the longtime Wylde devotee, and a solid introduction for the new fan. ~ Greg Prato |

| | Professional Reviews | | Billboard (p.37) - "Rounding things out are acoustic performances that nod to Wylde's soulful Southern rock influences, and his usual gruff vocals take on a pleasant, honeyed tone for 'Spoke in the Wheel.'" |
