For the majority of its six-year career, Britain's Spacemen 3 pursued its sound-for-sound's-sake obsessions in near-total oblivion. It turns out, however, that the band was merely a decade or so ahead of its time. Spacemen 3 featured guitarist/keyboardists Pete "Sonic Boom" Kember and Jason "Spaceman" Pierce. They later formed Spectrum and Spiritualized, respectively, and the much more commercially and critically successful '90s work of those two sonic iconoclasts has fueled much more interest in Spacemen 3 than the band ever received during its 1985-91 lifespan.
This renewed interest has produced a number of compilations. The excellent THE SINGLES, featuring 11 lengthy songs in its nearly 80-minute playing time, collects all of Spacemen 3's mid-'80s singles and EPs. SINGLES includes a fascinating deconstruction of the 13th Floor Elevators' "Rollercoaster" and the band's signature song, "Walkin' With Jesus." This US release is nearly identical to the 1995 UK release TRANSPARENT FLASHBACKS: THE GLASS SINGLES.
