| This double-CD best of collects a wide variety of songs from throughout the yodeling singer Jimmie Rodgers' prematurely shortened career, including his first recordings, "Soldiers' Sweetheart" and "Sleep, Baby Sleep," and his last, "Somewhere Below the Mason Dixon Line" and "Years Ago," recorded just before he died of tuberculosis. Rodgers' combination of folk ballads, blues, and vaudeville songs, which led to his often being cited as one of the founders of modern country music, is also well represented here, on tracks like "Frankie and Johnnie," "Blue Yodel No. 4" (this set contains Blue Yodels numbers one through 13), and "In the Jailhouse Now," all sung in a singular style that was to influence subsequent generations of performers, including Gene Autry and Ernest Tubb. | |
