| | Album Notes and Credits | Notes & Personnel Info | | This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. | | Much like the show it supports, The Simple Life, Vol. 2 is a better-conceived and more entertaining pop culture artifact than it has any right to be. An unrepentantly shiny and brash amalglamation of girly dance-pop, punk-pop, rap, ironic nods to country music, and the odd bit of alternative rock, the collection may or may not reflect what Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie actually listen to on their reality TV road trips. However, it does riff -- intentionally and otherwise -- on the debutante duo's larger-than-life public images. Obviously, the Penfifteen Club's tribute "Hey, Ms. Hilton" celebrates her uniquely plastic beauty and famous-for-being-famous existence, and We 3 Kings' "The Simple Life Theme" and Hayseed Dixie's pickin'-and-grinnin' version of "Centerfold" reflect the show's Green Acres-times-two concept. The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's "Jambalaya (On the Bayou)," the Thrills' "Big Sur," and Gomez's "These 3 Sins" have a similarly backwoods twang, minus the irony. But there are other, subtler reflections, too: the album features "I'll Do Anything" by Courtney Love, whose whole career and intermingling of public and private lives are just as revealing as any reality TV show. And several of the songs, including Jamelia's "Dirty Dirty," "I'll Do Anything," and "Hey, Ms. Hilton" itself, have been edited for profanity, in much the same way that Hilton and Richie's wild-child personas are edited for prime time. Subtexts aside, The Simple Life is a fun, if wildly scattered, soundtrack that ranks as one of the more enjoyable marketing tie-ins from the reality TV phenomenon. ~ Heather Phares |
