The bestselling management expert tells how to overcome the " silos" that divide work units and paralyze performance

Lencioni’ s fifth book offers solutions to a key leadership issue– the impact of turf wars and political infighting on organizational effectiveness– written in the form of a realistic but fictional story. The concept of " Silos" (vertical structures within organizations) has become synonymous with barriers to workplace effectiveness and deep political conflict. Silos devastate organizations, kill productivity, push good people out the door, and jeopardize the achievement of corporate goals. They cause stress, exasperation, and disappointment by forcing employees to fight unwinnable battles with people who should be teammates. Like Patrick Lencioni’ s other successful books, this one tackles a tough business issue in both an entertaining and instructive way. Unlike his other titles, however, this book focuses on not one but four organizations– two universities, a hospital, and a church– all struggling to eliminate their silos and bring a sense of alignment back into place.

Patrick M. Lencioni (Lafayette, CA) is the founder and President of The Table Group, a management consulting firm specializing in executive team development and organizational health. As a consultant and keynote speaker, he has worked with thousands of senior executives in organizations ranging from Fortune 500s and high-tech start-ups to universities and nonprofits. Clients who have engaged his services include New York Life, AT& T, Sam’ s Club, Microsoft, Allstate, Visa, FedEx, and the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, to name a few. He isthe author of five previous books, including the New York Times bestseller The Five Dysfunctions of a Team (0-7879-6075-6).

Praise
Marketing won't speak to engineering. Sales thinks production hogs the budget. Front desk believes back room's lazy. These sorts of turf wars, which turn outwardly unified companies into groupings of uncommunicative "silos," are the stuff of management lore. According to bestselling author Lencioni (The Five Dysfunctions of a Team), "they waste resources, kill productivity and jeopardize the achievement of goals"-they also drive workers into tizzies of frustration. Like his previous books, Lencioni's latest addresses the management problem through a fictional story; this one revolves around a self-employed consultant named Jude, who has to dismantle silos at an upscale hotel, a technology company and a hospital. Split into two sections, Lencioni's book first shows Jude discovering a solution to silos, then summarizes Jude's lessons into a strategy that readers can apply to any business. Lencioni's proposal is so full of common sense-namely, end turf wars by getting departments to rally around a common goal-that managers will be eager to apply it themselves. Just as refreshing is Lencioni's use of character and plot, which is far above average for the business genre. As sympathetic as Jude is, he makes Lencioni's management lessons memorable. (Mar.) Chapter One

HONEYMOON

Five months. That's how long it took for Jude Cousins' entrepreneurial passion and excitement to fade into anxiety and panic. While it was true that he had never started a company before and didn't know exactly what to expect, five months just seemed like too short of a honeymoon to Jude.

To be fair, Cousins Consulting wasn't really a company. Just a consulting practice operating out of a spare bedroom in Jude's home. No employees. No politics. Just Jude, his passion, and three clients. Two of which, unfortunately, were already in jeopardy.

HATCH

For the seven years prior to starting his consulting firm, Jude had received nothing but encouragement and recognition in his career, which only served to magnify his frustration as an entrepreneur.

After a brief and unsatisfying postcollege stint in journalism, Jude took a job in the marketing department at Hatch Te
