 Editor's Note
Set in a strange, colorful land populated by fairy tale characters, SHREK is a hilarious comedy that will win over audiences of children and adults alike. Shrek (voiced by Mike Myers) is a fearsome green ogre living in isolation in his own cozy little swamp. He is not receptive to visitors, and fends off the occasional party of torch-wielding villagers with ease. But when the power-hungry Lord Farquaad (John Lithgow) turns Shrek's swamp into a relocation camp for dozens of banished fairy-tale characters (including some pesky dwarves, wolves, and fairies) Shrek's quiet, introverted life is ruined. Joined by the talkative Donkey (Eddie Murphy), Shrek makes his way to Farquaad's realm of Duloc, where the Lord promises makes Shrek and offer: He will rid Shrek's land of the unwanted visitors if Shrek will go on a simple quest to free Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz) from her remote, dragon-guarded castle and convince her to marry Farquaad. On their quest, Shrek and Donkey run into a number of bizarre situations, and Shrek finds himself realizing that he isn't quite the fearsome monster he has always made himself out to be. Reinventing the traditional fairy tale adventure, SHREK features gorgeous computer animation, a unique sense of humor, and compelling characters--especially Eddie Murphy's lovable Donkey.

Computer animation's "WOW" factor bar has just bumped up another notch. Shrek, a fairy tale of sorts, is the raiser of that bar, giving us a tale that revolves around an ogre who makes candles out of his earwax, a talking donkey who’s afraid of the dark, a princess who likes “Piña Coladas and getting caught in the rain,” and a "vertically challenged" lord who looks a bit like Disney CEO Michael Eisner.

5 of 5 Shrek is great Wednesday, June 26, 2002 excellent from mpls, mn
Very cute, very funny movie. I had to vote here to help offset the lame "2" rating. This was my favorite movie the year it came out. I don't own a DVD yet, but this may become my 1st purchase. Highly recommended. Was this review helpful?

-The movie-
This is a good movie. Many ppl didn't go see this movie because they were under the impression that it's a kid's movie. This couldn't be farther from the truth. Animation doesn't equal "for kids". In American culture we've been conditioned to think this way by Saturday cartoons & Disney. But animation is just a form of media, it has no age or audience restrictions. In certain ways Shrek is much like "The Simpsons", children can enjoy the simple & often gross-out comedy, but there's a whole other layer of comedy for grown-ups. In fact I'd say this movie was aimed more at adults. And this movie is FUNNY, full of witty humor & fairy tale puns. I'm not a very picky judge of acting, so as far as I could tell the acting was just fine. Add to this the fact that the voice actors recorded alone, without actual interaction with each other & one should be doubly impressed. Shrek is full of so many funny & enjoyable moments that it's a DVD you'll find yourself watching scenes from again & again. *5/5*--
-The Video-
Like Toy Story, Shrek is transferred onto DVD directly from the digital source material with no in between steps that could cause a loss in picture quality. The picture is for all intents & purposes, perfect. The only gripe I had was some compression artifacts during the two scenes where Shrek & Donkey walk thru the sunflower fields, there's significant break up & pixelation on sections of the sunflower fields, but this probably isn't evident unless you have a larger screen. Other than that, the images are razor sharp, colors jump off the screen at you, there is no visible edge enhacement, and contrast is great throughout. *5/5*--
-The Audio-
It's DTS and it's very good. Now I can't say the audio blew me away, but in the parts where it needed to, the audio impressed. This isn't a movie with tons of explosions & action, so the sound isn't particularly agressive. It's in the subtle details that I was impressed, very good use of surrounds to create a sense of depth & surrounding. You don't necessarily get very obvious left or right surround use, but just a very nice diffuse surround most of the time. But in the dragon scene is where the audio comes alive with plenty of very directional surround effects. I can't say I was overly impressed by the bass, but it didn't take away from anything either. *4/5* Was this review helpful?

I fail to see why everyone is so excited about this film. The CG is well done, but it fails on almost every level. The jokes are childish, the plot standard and predictable, the actors annoying, with John Lithgow providing the only humourous lines. This is a step in the wrong direction for animation. Those looking for stunning animated features should look towards "Beauty and the Beast" or "Grave of the Firefles", not this travestry of a film. Was this review helpful?

I watch a lot of movies and animated movies are not my favorite. Yet this movie changes everything you ever thought about animation. Funniest movie I have ever seen! Was this review helpful?
