| | | When a family of magnets is stuck "inside" the refrigerator, they're left to face the monstrous hand that reaches forth in a great flash of light. Full color. Annotation: The Shivers family--made up of Grandma, Grandpa, Mama, Papa, and little Sonny--are both flat and freezing. They live in a dark box that has violent moments of disruption involving shockingly bright lights, enormous hands, and a moving landscape. Desperate for warmth, the family begins to explore, only to disappear, one by one, in the mysterious Buttery Cliff or the once-hot Emerald Lake. What on earth is going on? With Paul O. Zelinsky's popular illustrations, this is a Kirkus Best Children's Book of 2006.
| Praise| "Manushkin's sparking mix of folkloric repetition, funny dialogue and--"PHOOMPH!!!"--perfectly chosen sound effects, cleverly withholds its punch line till the end." 10/01/2006 |
