    Editor's Note

This modern retelling of George Bernard Shaw's PYGMALION features Rachael Leigh Cook and Freddie Prinze Jr. as high-school students on two sides of the clique divide. Prinze stars as a high-school stud who makes a bet with a friend that he can transform the hopelessly geeky Cook into a prom queen. It turns out the transformation is even more successful than he could have imagined--before he knows it, he's fallen in love with her himself. SHE?S ALL THAT features Matthew Lillard, Anna Paquin, Paul Walker, and Kevin Pollak, as well as acting appearances for music artists Usher and Lil? Kim.

She's All That is about one idea short of being an excellent teenage romance. As it stands it's a pleasing but routine effort. It has some things going for it. The leads, Freddie Prinze Jr. and Rachel Leigh Cook, have a certain something -- Prinze in a self-assured yet ingenuous way, Cook in a more offbeat, sharp-minded way. The story has some amusing turns, at least in the beginning... On the plus side, She's All That is intermittently funny. Jodi Lyn O'Keefe is amusing as the supremely selfish and popular Taylor, Laney's prom-queen rival. The running gag about Taylor's relationship with a former cast member of MTV's The Real World -- played by Matthew Lillard as a wonderfully vain imbecile -- is the best thing in the picture. - Mick LaSalle

There's fun in the plot, but there's more fun around the edges. The movie stars Freddie Prinze Jr. as Zack, who has the third best grade point average in his class, and is also the captain of the soccer team and dates the beautiful class sexpot Taylor (Jodi Lyn O'Keefe). But Taylor breaks up with him after going to Daytona Beach and meeting Brock Hudson, star of The Real World, an MTV show in which real kids are cast more or less as themselves. I only got a quick glimpse, but I think Brock has a tattoo of himself on his right arm... To give the movie credit, it's as bored with the underlying plot as we are. Even the prom queen election is only a backdrop for more interesting material, as She's All That explores differences in class and style, and peppers its screenplay with very funny little moments. - Roger Ebert

4 of 5 It ain't ALL that, but it's fun nonetheless Saturday, August 07, 1999
    Bernard from Davis, CA
The original pressing of this disc may not play back in DD 5.1. I've heard from various sources that Disney will be re-shipping this title in mid-August with this problem fixed. You should be able to get a replacement wherever you buy the DVD. If you haven't purchased this movie yet, I'd wait for a couple of weeks.

5 of 5 She's All That is Romantic fun Thursday, July 22, 1999

The movie is great fun, but some of the scenes which represented conversations got in the way. Prince and Cook were so good together, the movie's other characters, although food for thought, were annoying. I would have to say that the movie did work, and I am going to purchase it.

Another installment of the last summers blitz of teenager movies, She's All That is a light-hearted romance comedy with a predicatable theme but enjoyable dialogue. The film touches on several issues of adolescence but most importantly provides the proper

You have to give a lot of credit to the filmmakers behind She's All That. When you can take a standard plotline and invigorate it with smart dialogue and lively performances, you got yourself a very entertaining movie. This is My Fair Lady set in a high school environment. Freddie Prinze Jr. and Rachael Leigh Cook give standout performances and have great on-screen chemistry between their characters. This movie is a charming delight for audiences young and old.
