Reading Shakespeare's Language: Sonnets

The language of Shakespeare's Sonnets, like that of poetry in general, is both highly compressed and highly structured. A Reader from Haughton, LA

This edition has each sonnet on the facing page (on the right), alone, one sonnet printed clearly per page, and notes about the sonnet on the reverse of the preceding page (on the left). I was surprised by the arrangement and the thoughtfulness of it, and I would highly recommend this book, especially as an inexpensive trade paperback. I don't enjoy modern commentary on Shakespeare, but I have come to expect it as an unavoidable evil in every book containing his writing. This book is no different. It is stuffed with essays, everything from the history of the world (condensed version) to reading, understanding, and interpreting the writing in politically correct times. But here are the sonnets, beautifully printed and inexpensive, and this is one of my favorite books.
