By the late 1970s, the golden age of '60s rock had devolved into a bloated corporate behemoth dominated by listless imitators of Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. Inspired by the anti-establishment subculture of American bands like Television and the New York Dolls, British manager-cum-svengali Malcolm McLaren assembled a ragtag quartet of working-class youth and transformed them into a revitalizing force that put the rebellion back into rock.
