"Atonality originates in an attempt to liberate the twelve notes of the chromatic scale from the diatonic functional associations they still retain in "chromatic" music--to dissociate, so to speak, the chromatic scale from "chromaticism.".." (from the first line)

Widely recognized as the definitive work in its field ever since its original publication in 1962, "Serial Composition and Atonality" remains an unsurpassed introduction to the technical features of what is probably the most revolutionary body of work since the beginnings of polyphony. In the analysis of specific compositions there is first and last of all a concern with the musical surface--an attempt to trace connections and distinctions there before offering any deeper-level constructions, and to offer none where their effects are not obvious on more immediate levels of musical experience. In this sixth edition of the book, George Perle employs the new and more consistent terminology for the identification of transpositional levels of twelve-tone sets that he first proposed in "Twelve-Tone Tonality" (1977).

Annotation:
Pulitzer Prize winner George Perle's SERIAL COMPOSITION AND ATONALITY is one of the foundational texts of 20th-century music theory. With detailed analysis of canonical pieces, Perle explicates the techniques of the serial method, making this a necessary resource for interested composers, musicians, and theorists.

Author Bio
George Perle
George Perle (born in 1916) was a distinguished composer and theorist. Discovering Alban Berg's music as an undergraduate at DePaul University greatly influenced his musical development, as did his studies in the 1940s with Ernst Krenek. His theoretical writings on serial music, in particular SERIAL COMPOSITION AND ATONALITY (1962), as well as his studies of Berg's music garnered much respect from his academic colleagues. His music found wider appreciation when he won the Pulitzer Prize for his WIND QUINTET NO. 4 and then a MacArthur Foundation grant in 1986. Throughout his career, he taught at many institutions and was professor emeritus at the City University of New York. Perle died in 2009 at the age of 93.
