4 of 5 Overall good Tuesday, May 05, 2009 adamVA from Fredericksburg, VA
Easy to setup, simple interface. Would have liked more advanced settings...
Little weird setting up user access controls. Sometimes have trouble accessing over the network share with both Windows and Linux.
USB network printer worked great!
Overall works as advertised. Was this review helpful?
3 of 5 This thing is SLOW over ethernet Tuesday, May 01, 2007 pvaudo from MA
I was hoping that file access would be at least equal to USB speeds, given the 10/100 ethernet connection. But in reality the transfers are slow. Sometimes I can play an MP3 over the network fine, sometime it will be choppy. Have had this unit for 2 years now, and even with the firmware upgrades this has never gotten any better. 5 of 5 Excellent product well worth the cost Sunday, November 05, 2006 A Customer from Louisville, Co
I've found this 300GB drive to be easy to use and to set up. It's performance is speedy and the unit is quiet. The documentation is a little lacking as it tells you what you'll see, but not why you're doing it. Also, it takes a bit to search through the website to find the info needed and to upgrade the software and work through in FAQs. However, product is so easy to use, it's not that big of a deal. This is a really good bet for the cost. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 great product so far Thursday, September 14, 2006 A Customer from BRLA
I've only had this product set up to my system for a few days, but so far it's been great as an external back up for my entire network of computers. The software that came with the hard drive is extremely easy to use. Buy.com had a great price and I would recommend them to anyone. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Gets the job done fast and cheap Tuesday, September 05, 2006 A Customer from Orlando, FL
This is the second of these drives that I purchase. Speed is not an issue if you hook it up to a 100mbps ethernet router. This drive is quiet, reliable, and a trained monkey can use the software that comes with it. Unlike other people say in the reviews, you CAN attach usb drives larger than 4gb. I have an external 6gb disk that works perfectly well in parallel with a 1GB jump drive. My only gripe is that there is no defragmentation utility provided for the drive. Other than that, I'm very happy with both drives. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Extremely easy to set up Friday, April 28, 2006 T Kent from Saratoga, CA
This product is extremely easy to set up and use. Within just a few minutes, I had the drive on the network and was accessing it from multiple PCs. Nice performance. Overall, a great product. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 This was so easy Monday, April 03, 2006 Dennis from Lexington, KY
I needed a backup solution for a church with 8 computers on a simple network. I expected the device to plug into the network and come right up, which it did. But the pleasant surprise was the Maxtor software. I installed it on each computer and the wizard does all the mapping of a network drive. And then it has an easy to use interface to schedule which folders and what day and time to automatically perform a backup. So easy! Was this review helpful?

Unlike other NAS appliances I have owned and used, this one works like a charm right out of the box. Not only that, but once you have it and know what the serial number is, you can download an update from the Maxtor site that makes this a Shared Storage Plus device at no additional cost. The speed and reliability of this device is light years above its competition. I will be ordering more for my customer's use. Was this review helpful?

Don't let the high speed ATA133 and the 100Mbps interfaces fool you. This device uses Microsoft compatible NETBEUI protocol (as in Microsoft Home Networking) over the LAN and throughput is quite low.
The speed is the same as if you used Microsoft's SHARE feature between two PCs. I had hoped for a software update to change it to straight TCP/IP or something, but still nothing.. have had my unit since they came out in the spring of 2005.
On the positive side, it is trouble-free and works.. just slow. Was this review helpful?

After a recent harddrive failure I realized I needed a new storage option that I could easily share files to all my networked computers. I did quite a bit of research into all the "starter" network storage drives looking for the maximum storage space and features for minimum amount of money. I have had good luck with Maxtor harddrives in the past and this shared storage device fit my need. It was easy to set up and plug in. The Maxtor software made it a breeze to set up drive access on all of my computers. The device's control panel is easily accessed through a web browser. There is a known glitch with file timestamps stored on the drive and Maxtor has a new firmware update on their web site that fixes the issue. File transfer speed is excellent for 100MB network. I am able to play mp3 and video files right from the drive without hiccups. Maxtor has really saved the day. Was this review helpful?

Buy.com was exceptional. The product was at my door within 24 hours of the online order using the default delivery (3-5 business days).
The drive was very easy to install and works as promised. It is not fast over a 10/100 network over a Linksys wired router, but speed isn't why I ordered the drive.
If you add USB drives there is a 4GB file size limitation due to Maxtor requires FAT32 formatting on attached drives, according to the User Guide.
