For the person who needs access to their digital content away from home, at work, or online, while also allowing that same content to be shared in a secure setting, look no further than the Seagate Free Agent Pro Portable Hard Drive. This powerful portable hard drive delivers high-speed transfers, while also giving you the ability to share content with others safely and securely from a remote location or even online.

With up to 1 Terabyte and an ultra-slim design for a clutter-free desktop, your FreeAgent Pro external hard drive helps keep you safe from goof-ups by automatically saving new versions of your content that you can easily access if need be. And should something happen to your PC, you can roll back your Windows operating system, settings, and applications to a point in time when they ran smoother, like before a virus attack. Even though the system settings are taken back in time, updates to photos, music and critical data files are kept current.

The Free Agent Pro is also ideal for those who want quick and painless transfers of their data from their computer to their drive, and from their drive to online accounts (such as Shutterfly or email). Simply plug it in to any power source and connect the USB cable to any computer, and you're ready to go. This hip-looking hard drive takes up less room on your desk than an ordinary stapler--1 x 3 x 5.2 inches (H x D x W)-- giving you more space for your other desktop items. Meanwhile, the hard drive only measures 7.5 x 1.4 x 6.3-inches (H x D x W) and it matches its small base.

The Free Agent Pro data mover automatically duplicates and moves selected content from your hard drive to multiple locations, such as copying your contact lists and emails to your iPod, or photos to a Shutterfly account. This feature also allows you to move your entire 'My Documents' folder to the Free Agent, or move it to your own online space where you (or others you choose) can access it from any browser 24/7. The Free Agent software also offers the feature of rolling back your system to better time if something should happen to your PC while automatic revisions of your content help keep you safe from goof-ups.

Move files or other content with either USB 2.0, eSATA, or FireWire 400 allowing a maximum transfer rate of 480Mb/sec for USB, 3Gb/sec for eSATA, and 400 MB/sec for FireWire 400, while delivering a high performance spindle speed of 7,200 RPM. The unit also comes with a sophisticated touch point power on/off switch.

The Free Agent Pro software and drive formatting works only with Windows, but the drive can easily be reformatted for a Mac with OS X's Disk Utility. This portable hard drive is also compatible with Windows Vista (as well as Windows XP and Windows 2000), allowing you to backup your content regardless of operating system upgrades. A five-year warranty is also included, giving you complete peace of mind. Now with the ability to take your data with you anywhere you go, your digital content finally has room to breathe.

4 of 5 Good value, except........ Wednesday, January 07, 2009
HR from Lecanto, Fl
This FreeAgent Pro was a great value. The sleek, brown case and the orange light make it a good looking desk center piece as well. The power off function leaves a lot to be desired though; it doesn't work more than it does. My biggest beef is that the ESATA, which was one of the biggest reasons I chose this product, doesn't work with my Vista 64bit and Seagate has failed to come out with Vista 64 drivers, so I am using the firewire for now in hopes that the Seagate powers that be get off their duffs and come to the rescue. Also, the Seagate Tools utility does not work with Vista 64. Other than that, I am satisfied with the unit.

I purchased this about 3 months ago and have had no problems. I am using the USB connection so the speed is not too fast but adequate. Cannot beat buy.com price or shipping speed or the 5 yr warranty...

5 of 5 Seagate-FreeAgent Pro-Outstanding Value Friday, December 19, 2008
Patty3m from Houston, TX
The Seagate-FreeAgent Pro external hard/drive, which I purchased from Buy.com – is a great value; web-site has remarkable product descriptions, along with good on/time shipping. I've purchased a variety of equip. from Buy.com and their reliability is exceptional. As I maintain a hm. network (4/PC-Dsktops & 1/PC laptp), I now have two (2) FreeAgent,750GB to back-up important data, programs, and more importantly, my photos, seeing that I'm a serious amateur photographer. While I have two (2) older externals (XiMeta and Netdisk), and all my back-up drives continue to serve me well for securing my hm. network. The Auto Back-up feature within the FreeAgent has been flawless. Considering this product? ...from my experience with Buy.com, one cannot go wrong.

4 of 5 Fast & Quiet Saturday, December 13, 2008
A Customer from Fairfax Virginia
This is a fast and very quiet drive. I am using it on a Windows XP desktop without the supplied software the drive came with. I just attached the drive and XP connected to it immediately with no issues.

5 of 5 Works Great Monday, December 08, 2008
Daniel from Alexander, AR
The software and the eSATA, Firewire 400 and USB 2.0 interfaces made this drive a "best buy" for me. My 40gb PC drive was full and became useless. I was able to move all my photos and documents to this drive using the USB 2.0 interface. My next purchase will be a new PC with an eSATA connection.

5 of 5 This THE one !! Monday, December 08, 2008
Snowman from Florida
I love this drive. Not only does it do what it is supposed to do, but it does it in real style! The best looking External HD out there. I love the lighting set up and the way you can easily tell that it is in standby mode. Looks so classy. Does a fantastic job in such an elegant way. The on/off switch works great so that you can't turn it off at the wrong time and risk losing data

5 of 5 Great Value Monday, December 08, 2008
Harold from Mineola, TX
Price, service and delivery were outstanding, as usual. I particularly like the dependability of Seagate drives. This is the eighth one I have purchased in the last year to back up all data from several computers in my business. I have used Seagates consistently for several years with complete satisfaction. Firewire is always my choice for the extra speed.

BLJ from Skokie, IL
Item arrived as promised and connected with no problems. I was able to move all my media and docs to the external and free up space on my c: drive which is great. I am buying the Phantom today to use as a back up for my media collection. Looks like a 1 TB bargain on cyber Monday. Hope it is just as good as this one. Thanks buy.com for a great deal on a great item.

5 of 5 System and files backup with disc wizard free add Wednesday, November 19, 2008
Franklin Lacy - franklinlacy.com from Tampa, FL
How many of us have gotten a virus which involves loading back in initial software that came with computer, upgrades of same, added software packages, all upgrades of those, and data files. This could be a huge task taking many hours. Most hard disk backup systems just backup data. This system included. But Seagate's web site has a free disc wizard down load in their upgrades which allows total mirror image backups of system and files onto this hard disk. It replaces the data only backup software that comes on the hard disk drive and includes software for a bootable CD writing to restore from the hard disk drive in case of a total system failure. Just boot up on this cd, and it restores your system with all upgrades exactly the way it was when the on going back ups were automatically last made. What could be easier?

5 of 5 Seagate FreeAgent Pro HD Great Product Wednesday, November 12, 2008
Redking from South Florida
I installed the drive in a jiffy. Worked right out of the box. Need to read the instructions to help select correct files to back up. Bought this because of software included. Did however use a 3rd party software to create a disk image of my Main drive. This way I have no problem doing a full system restore. It does get very warm and I wouldn't run it constantly. I only turn it on every other day. I believe fan assisted cooling extends drive life which the drive does not have.

5 of 5 great backup drive for a mac Friday, October 03, 2008
A Customer from Atlanta, Ga
not much to say, hopefully a backup drive doesn't get much attention. hooked up easily to my mac via firewire. I run it once a day or so to let time capsule back it up. seems to be fast enough, I don't use it for anything else. 2 months, so far so good. who knows how long it will last. 5 yr warranty hopefully worth something. seems to run pretty cool if I leave it on 24hrs, although I don't like having it run constantly, I feel like it's less likely to get corrupted/power surge/ etc. My only beef is the touch sensitive power button. It's not intuitive and there's no feedback, so you are always guessing if it's working or not. when you turn it on the light fades on after about a second, and when you turn it off you have to hold the button for a few seconds before it fades out. I can see where a lot of uninfomed users would think that it's defective. I think I can hear it going to sleep when the mac goes to sleep- but that's only at night. Maybe I should just leave it on...

5 of 5 Great External HD, Not the best backup software Tuesday, September 23, 2008
Jim from Urbandale, IA
I purchased the FreeAgent Pro 750GB EHD three weeks ago to use as primary storage for my personal data (85GB), my digital picture library (60GB & growing fast), temporary backup of my personal documents (45GB), and working storage for video projects. That leaves plenty of future storage space!! I also have an 80GB EHD just for archived files, and a 300GB EHD that I use for weekly/monthly backup of personal files. The selling point for me over other USB 2 drives of similar capacity was that the FreeAgent Pro includes eSATA and Firewire 400 interfaces. I expect that my next PC (hoping to buy a core2quad soon) will have an eSATA port, which is over 6 times faster than USB 2.0, making the external drive's response time the same as an internal drive. The FreeAgent drive is truely plug-n-play with USB2, and turns on & off with the computer. (or at least the lights do. The drive continues to spin.) The drive does spin down after several minutes of non-use, whether on or off, which is a very nice feature. The on-off switch is supposed to be touch sensitive, but it's actually just sensitive....sometimes it works, but mostly doesn't. Maybe it's just my fingers. I wish it had a real on-off toggle switch! The first thing I did was partition the drive, carving off the first 60GB (fastest read/write area) to use as working storage for video editing projects. I used Partition Commander 10 (great piece of software) which handles re-sizing partitions without destroying data. I then installed the FreeAgent tools with auto-backup. The utilities work very simply to check the drive status and make simple adjustments. I tried the auto-backup utility, and it seemed to work nicely in the background as advertised. BUT, I later found that it didn't work when I wasn't logged into my account, and it created thousands of tracking files. I quickly uninstalled it and deleted all the tracking files. I lowered the ease-of-use rating to a 4 because of the Memeo AutoBackup software. I suggest using something simpler, like the AllwaySync freeware that gives you much more control of the process....and it's free. I would recommend this drive to anyone needing extra storage space! A Great price per GB!! Skip the software install....

5 of 5 Great Drive Tuesday, September 23, 2008
mike from Los Angeles, CA
I had 2 western digital drives before for my mac, and with this Seagate, it works great! I love the firewire because sometimes with a mac, it won't register the usb for external hard drives. I have no problems with this drive. I love it and so far so good! Great price too. I actually paid about the same price for this 750 gb Seagate as my 160 gb Western Digital drive (i bought 1 year ago).

5 of 5 Seagate freeagent pro 750gb Saturday, September 13, 2008
Bob Sisco thedad10001 from New Bern N.C.
large enough to keep all important files for backup. was easy to setup and use. I had a friend that had several movies on his computer and was able to copy them to view on my laptop. I have backed up my whole main computer hard drive and now can copy files I use to my laptop. I also rebuild old computers for a volunteer organization and can use this drive for all necessary programs that I install on these computers. I would recomend this product to anyone and the price was well worth it.

4 of 5 Great EHD, weird on/off button. Thursday, September 11, 2008
A Customer from Wyoming
Overall we are very pleased with this drive, it's quiet, fast, and the software works great! The on/off switch is horrible, you put your finger on it's special spot... if it likes you it will turn off... if it doesn't keep pushing.

4 of 5 Quite Drive, good speed through firewire. Thursday, September 11, 2008
A Customer from Torrance, CA
The drive is very quiet, you hardly know it's on. I had trouble getting the eSATA to work, and have read about issues with data loss using the eSATA and this drive. I'm using the firewire and it suits me just fine. Drive was a good price for the size.

4 of 5 seagate 750 pro Tuesday, September 09, 2008
stefon74 from Austin Texas
It has a nice brushed aluminum case. It came with fire wire and usb but no esata cable. I did buy an esata cable and a 3gb per second express esata card for my laptop. The transfer with the USB is 20mb and 45mb with the esata. I was disappointed with the performance. I read that the Cavalry external hard drive with the esata will transfer at 65mb per second. My laptop does have a 5400RPM hard drive this might slow it down some. The older seagate you had to unscrew and move the connection where the cables plug into to use the esata interface. The new ones are fixed and you no longer have to mess with it. The software I do not use. Over all I like the hard drive. It looks nice on my book shelf and lights up orange when it pluged in the computer.

5 of 5 Great value Tuesday, September 09, 2008
A Customer from Richmond,VA
I paid 133.00 for this hard drive and I have been using it for 2 weeks. So far it works great. Set-up was easy and it's very slim. You can turn the glowing yellow light off if you like. My only concern is that it runs all the time even though I set it to sleep after 5 minutes of not being used. It is not cooled but doesn't get hot. I'm very happy with this item VERY HAPPY. This is my first ever external hard drive and I have used 1/4 of the hard drive so far. We will see how long it works this great for.

4 of 5 Superb External Hard Drive Sunday, September 07, 2008
Skip E from Jacksonville, FL
Pros: Fast, very quiet. Very competitive price. Cons: The power switch, which is supposed to electronically detect a finger touching it, works sporadically or not at all. Sometimes it takes a few seconds to as long as a minute to turn unit off and I sometimes have to resort to pulling the power plug. My sister bought one and she has experienced the same problem. I would MUCH prefer a mechanical power switch which would eliminate any frustration. Although the almost too bright orange yellow bar that extends along the top and front is futuristic, it only notifies whether or not the drive is on or off, but doesn't tell if the drive is being accessed. Seagate provides USB and Firewire cable, but no eSata cable. Are they trying to tell us their eSata connection is buggy or are they just too cheap? Bottom line: Although the best external drive I've ever purchased, Seagate should get rid of the futuristic bells and whistles and focus purely on a utilitarian product because that's what most buyers want.

5 of 5 Works quietly and efficiently Sunday, September 07, 2008
A Customer from Sewell, NJ
First, this product was about $100 less than the price at BestBuy, so it was an excellent deal. Installation was very simple and within a half hour I was able to back up all of my important files and also move all of my video, audio, and picture files to create space on my pc's hard drive. I'm using the firewire connection and have had no problems or complaints with this drive.

5 of 5 Good value, huge capacity, no eSATA cable, no x64 Thursday, September 04, 2008
A Customer from Columbus, OH
The capacity of this drive is 750GB, which is larger than my internal HDDs by a large margin. The metal finish looks and feels nice, and the drive is adequately fast using USB2. I bought it because of the ability to use eSATA down the line, but it didn't include a cable, so I'll have to purchase that when I build my next system. Another big downer is that my current system is running Windows XP 64-bit, so the Seagate software will not install. I have usually been able to hack .ini and .msi files to force install scripts to work on my system, but this is intentionally disabled by Seagate (you can't install directly from the .msi file, and using the install .exe overwrites any .msi and .ini files you've altered), so that was a big disappointment. I can't select folders to auto backup, so I have to do everything manually, and the lights on the drive itself, while pretty, are distracting at times, and I have no way of turning them besides turning the drive off. Seagate should support x64, or let those of us who so choose install the software w/o support. Despite the lack of any working software, the drive does what it is supposed to do. It has a large capacity, does not get hot, looks nice, and is quiet. I purchased it at a price considerably lower than similar drives offered on other sites or from other companies, so given what I paid, and what I got, my overall satisfaction is very high, and I would recommend this drive to almost anyone, especially anyone NOT running my OS, or who has eSATA capabilities.

3 of 5 Drive is great; software not - does not work on Vi Tuesday, September 02, 2008
David from Fuquay-Varina, NC
Be warned: the software for this drive is not supported with Vista 64. <p> The drive itself works fine and I would give just the drive all ratings of 4 or 5. Setup was easy and the USB 2 connection works fine; my system detected the drive and ran the autoinstall for the FreeAgent Tools and the Seagate branded version of Memeo AutoBackup. <p> Once installed, however, the FreeAgent Tools sofware does not run. Seagate technical support told me to try to run the program with XP SP2 compatibility; this failed. On the Seagate forums, users had success with Windows 2000 compatibility instead, and that worked for me. <p> The Memeo AutoBackup is an entirely different matter. It is not supported under Vista 64 either. The version that comes with the drive is 2.00.1291. When it runs, it tells you there is an update (2.50.2785) available. I downloaded and installed this and AutoBackup failed to run and the service does not get installed. I uninstalled it and reinstalled the Seagate tools from the hard drive to recover from this. Segate responded to my tech support requests by stating that the software is not compatible with Vista 64. <p> After reinstalling (at least uninstall lets it keep your settings and bacup directory selections), AutoBackup runs again, but the first backup ran overnight and only backed up 10% of the selected files. Half the time, it reports that the AutoBackup service is not running. The documentation says it can backup without the user logging in, but this does not seem to be so. I have to log in, then I have to grant permission for AutoBackup launcher to run. <p> After restarting (again), the backups ran much better (it has backed up over 70GB), but the software is still buggy. I had configured it to backup a c:\Public folder which contains subdirectories called "Documents" and "Media". This worked OK. Later, I added a new "Pictures" folder, but AutoBackup did not back this up, even though it should backup all new files/directories added to a selected directory. So, I don't trust it. <p> The UI for selecting backup exclusions is very poor. For each exlcusion, you must open a dialog, navigate to the folder (the software does not remember your last selection, you you must start at My Computer, C:, etc. and drill down). You cannot type in a path, either. This UI should be the exact same as the UI for selecting which directories to backup: present a full tree and check which ones to backup or exclude. <p> Also, when selecting what to backup or exclude, you can only select directories; you cannot select files. So, I can't exclude the 'Trash' or 'Junk' files that Mozilla Thunderbird creates. <p> So, if you buy this, use it as a great external drive; don't expect the software to provide good backups. (YMMV; it may work better on Vista 32; I just don't know.)

5 of 5 Fantastic drive ... Friday, August 22, 2008
A Customer from Los Angeles, CA
This is my 3rd Seagate Freeagent drive (this is my first pro) and all three are just superb drives. I like the fact the drives spin down after a few minutes, when not used. Because of the 'auto-spin-down' feature, these drives are perfect for a home base data server. I'm using them with my Airport Extreme and can access the drives from my Mac and PC. There are 2 versions of this drive the Freeagent and Freeagent Pro. Freeagent has a plastic cover with only one USB port, but the PRO version has metal casing with Firewire, ESATA and USB ports. I like the a metal cast as it feels much more solid, and can dissipate heat more effectively. At this price, I may go ahead and buy another one. Thank you buy.com for super fast shipping and excellent price.

5 of 5 BEST EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE EVER Wednesday, August 20, 2008
A Customer from Okemos, Michigan
I bought this hard drive like 3 months ago and I have never had a problem with this drive. People write stuff like "the touch sensitive button does not work" It is so easy, you touch and hold your finger to turn it off and simply tap it to turn on. The bonus software is great and the drive doesn't get very hot. I haven't used the e-sata cord yet but so far so good

5 of 5 Very cool external hard drive! Tuesday, August 19, 2008
Len G. from Wheaton, IL
I've had plenty of external hard drives connected to my Macs via FireWire, but this is the BEST by far. Glows orange and looks very cool sitting on my desk. The 750GB replaced four external drives sitting on the floor and still has plenty of room for more digital data. :-) Just buy it!

5 of 5 Nice device Sunday, June 22, 2008
orlantho from Houston, TX
Like the fact that it has 3 ways to connect: USB, Firewire, and eSata. Don't like that it does not come with the eSata cable. Also something really important! It's not a Smart and energy efficient hard drive. This means that you have to turn it on and off by yourself. It's been working well so far. Fast speed when trasnfering files and no errors (so far).

5 of 5 Upscale external hard drive Saturday, June 21, 2008
MikeK from Fort Collins, CO
The 750GB 7200 RPM Seagate external hard drive has great performance, capacity and an upscale firewire or USB2.0 interchangeable interface module. The 5 year warranty is valuable and speaks volumes about Seagate confidence in their disks. The styling and subtle yellow lighting is also a plus. Much better than entry level external HD.

4 of 5 Not thrilled with packaged software Monday, April 28, 2008
A Customer from Tulsa, OK
The drive performs well. The trial backup software was ok. The freeagent tools should allow auto sync of at least one drive when two are connected but it does not and tech support was not terribly helpful on the issue. Overall pretty satisfied with the drive, I use it with the firewire connection, still want to try the eSATA connection.

5 of 5 Great Product, Fast, Easy Setup Sunday, April 20, 2008
Chris from Abington, PA
I purchased this external drive to connect with my Sony Laptop computer. Sony uses a mini S400 firewire port. Drive comes with a USB/Esata interface and a S400 Firewire interface. Cables supplied are a standard USB and a standard firewire cable. The firewire cable didn't match the mini-port on my laptop so I had to buy a cable that fit. In the mean time I installed the drive on the USB port and it worked fine until the cable came in. No re-installation was required when I changed the interfaces and the cables. Backup software is a single user license that will automatically backup the computer that the drive is attached to. Works very well, does not seem to slow down the computer at all. To back up files from other computers I installed "Sync Toy", this is free software from Microsoft. Sync Toy let's you setup different manual synchronization operations across your network. I used it to transfer about 100 GB from another computer to this drive over night. Connection Recommendations: ESATA..FIREWIRE..USB2.0... If you have ESATA, use it. Firewire is the next best thing. USB is not great with large files. Very happy customer. Highly recommended.

4 of 5 No eSATA CAble = Lame Tuesday, February 12, 2008
Jordan from NYC, NY
Its pretty and the performance using eSATA can't be beat... too bad they don't see fit to actually include an eSATA cable. Other things to consider: 1. The drive is made to sit in a vertical orientation only. 2. There's not disc for the software, it's only on the drive. 3. Backing up to a hard drive is better than not backing up at all, but all hard drives eventually go bad. If your data is really important backup to CD/DVD/Blu-Ray/HD-DVD, etc.

5 of 5 Couldn't be happier Thursday, November 29, 2007
Ken Arneson from Seattle, WA
I bought this drive to use with the Time Machine feature on my MacPro. I do a lot of regular file revisions and wanted to have Time Machine archive my day's work automatically. To use this I just had to switch the base of the drive with the other provided adapter (took 4 seconds) and plug it into the back of my MacPro. That was pretty much it. I was pleased to see that the drive would behave just as though it were internal to the machine. It automatically powered down at night when the power savings feature turned on. I just leave it plugged in to my machine all the time unless I want to move it to one of my other machines (I have two partitions on the drive). The orange glow it emits when it's active is a nice touch. I think I'll get another one of these for my other Macs. I highly recommend it.

2 of 5 Seagate Free Agent 750GB Ext HD Sunday, September 30, 2007
Ronald Gordon from rgordos@yahoo.com
This is a very quirky drive. It comes with 2 plates; one with one eSata connection and one USB connector and the other with 2 firewire connectors. I finally decided to use the dual firewire connector plate so I could connect the drive to both my desktop and my laptop at the same time. That doesn't work because when both are connected the desktop can't copy data to the drive and the laptop doesn't recognize it. When only the desktop is connected via firewire and I'm creating a drive image with Acronis True Image, the process sometimes stops and I get an error message that the drive could not be read and may have bad sectors. It's not a problem with Acronis because the drive image works perfectly with other external drives I have. I would not buy this drive again or recommend it to others.

4 of 5 No eSATA cable Tuesday, August 21, 2007
Andrew from McLean, VA
This is a beautiful hard drive, the soft on/off switch is easy to use and I especially like the orange glow. The main reason I'm writing this review is to warn people that this drive does not come with an eSATA cable. It's advertised as an eSATA hard drive, but only comes with USB and Firewire cables. I live in a major metropolitan area and have not been able to find a single store that carries it either. So shop smart and pick up an eSATA cable at the same time you purchase this drive.

5 of 5 Fast, quiet and cool Saturday, May 26, 2007
A Customer from Minneapolis, MN
I have used the Free Agent Pro for about a month. I was immediately pleased (and surprised) by how quiet it is. I can't hear anything until I get my ear close. It has handled large file transfer very nicely. My home video plays nicely from the external drive. Even after several hours of use it remains relatively cool. Not nearly as warm as other external drives I have used. The on/off button had me stumped for a few minutes. It is electronic and not mechanical. You touch it once and the drive powers up. You hold your finger on it for a few seconds and it powers down.
