For the person who needs access to their digital content away from home, at work, or online, while also allowing that same content to be shared in a secure setting, look no further than the Seagate Free Agent Pro Portable Hard Drive. This powerful portable hard drive delivers high-speed transfers, while also giving you the ability to share content with others safely and securely from a remote location or even online.

With up to 1 Terabyte and an ultra-slim design for a clutter-free desktop, your FreeAgent Pro external hard drive helps keep you safe from goof-ups by automatically saving new versions of your content that you can easily access if need be. And should something happen to your PC, you can roll back your Windows operating system, settings, and applications to a point in time when they ran smoother, like before a virus attack. Even though the system settings are taken back in time, updates to photos, music and critical data files are kept current.

The Free Agent Pro is also ideal for those who want quick and painless transfers of their data from their computer to their drive, and from their drive to online accounts (such as Shutterfly or email). Simply plug it in to any power source and connect the USB cable to any computer, and you're ready to go. This hip-looking hard drive takes up less room on your desk than an ordinary stapler--1 x 3 x 5.2 inches (H x D x W)-- giving you more space for your other desktop items. Meanwhile, the hard drive only measures 7.5 x 1.4 x 6.3-inches (H x D x W) and it matches its small base.

The Free Agent Pro data mover automatically duplicates and moves selected content from your hard drive to multiple locations, such as copying your contact lists and emails to your iPod, or photos to a Shutterfly account. This feature also allows you to move your entire 'My Documents' folder to the Free Agent, or move it to your own online space where you (or others you choose) can access it from any browser 24/7. The Free Agent software also offers the feature of rolling back your system to better time if something should happen to your PC while automatic revisions of your content help keep you safe from goof-ups.

Move files or other content with either USB 2.0, eSATA, or FireWire 400 allowing a maximum transfer rate of 480Mb/sec for USB, 3Gb/sec for eSATA, and 400 MB/sec for FireWire 400, while delivering a high performance spindle speed of 7,200 RPM. The unit also comes with a sophisticated touch point power on/off switch.

The Free Agent Pro software and drive formatting works only with Windows, but the drive can easily be reformatted for a Mac with OS X's Disk Utility. This portable hard drive is also compatible with Windows Vista (as well as Windows XP and Windows 2000), allowing you to backup your content regardless of operating system upgrades. A five-year warranty is also included, giving you complete peace of mind. Now with the ability to take your data with you anywhere you go, your digital content finally has room to breathe.

5 of 5 Works GOOD Saturday, January 03, 2009
Vincent from Santa Fe, NM

Bought this after having having used same model for about a year now for regular desktop back ups. I tried the included software at first but it seemed to conflict with Vista (?) so am using Windows Back Up with no problems. Did have one incident when PC suddenly could not "see" the drive and missed a scheduled back up but unplugging/replugging the 1394 connection and power wire fixed the problem.

Good price, prompt delivery. Hard drive and included backup software are the best package I have used. Drive is quiet and fast. Backup software works better than most.

5 of 5 Good product Wednesday, August 13, 2008
D McCay from Saint Louis, MO
There were a lot of mixed reviews on this drive. So far I am very happy. I have not used the included software or the automatic backup yet, which at first glance seems a little cumbersome. Great value and a good drive. Provides a good warranty and plenty of cables.

5 of 5 Worked great Wednesday, July 09, 2008
Sidster from WA
For what I wanted, it worked flawlessly. As some people might have mentioned, the power button is not a great design. I mostly ignore it. It does have a power save mode which is good, but does take a a little while to spin back up, which is perfectly normal as any other drive. Looks it's good, but I think the orange light is a bit bright in a dark room. Guess it serves as a good night light. Setup was easy. Just plug & play.

4 of 5 Good hard drive Tuesday, July 08, 2008
John from Garland, TX
This was the best deal for the money by far. I found it for a great deal and since my new laptop supports FireWire 400 I wanted the improved speed over USB. It's not the smallest drive ever, but it's definitely not the biggest or the heaviest. I can carry it around in my laptop bag with me if I need to and it seems to operate very well. It automatically goes to sleep when my laptop does and has a power button, although the button takes some getting used to. This drive would be worlds more portable if they could find a way to make the base smaller and not so wide. Overall though, great drive.

5 of 5 Great Buy Tuesday, July 01, 2008
Jim from Valley Cottage, NY
Price is right... Waranty is awesome. Most external Hard Drives have a 1 or 2 year warranty... this has a 5 year! you also get all 3 hook ups... USB, Firewire, and eSata! Fast and easy... Liked it so much I bought a second one for my son!

5 of 5 Connection Dock Saturday, June 07, 2008
RWI from NJ
I'm guessing that I got a newer model than some of the other posters but on my drive all 3 connections are present without switching anything. So far, so good, I connected to my Mac, reformatted and now use it for my Time Machine backups. The only thing missing for me would be Fire 800 but for what I'm doing I guess its not really a big deal. It seems pretty quiet, it looks nice and seems to be solidly built. The Five year warranty says a lot as so many other Manufactures give only 1 year. I guess time will tell but so far I do like it and would purchase another.

1 of 5 Save your money - look elsewhere Thursday, June 05, 2008
Nick from Baltimore MD.
The FreeAgent I purchased two months ago can best be described as junk. First one failed power up out of the box. First replacement failed in one week with high incidence of write delay errors and frequent drive clicking (of course after transfering over 400 GB of CD audio.) Second replacement was no better with frequent write delay and almost constant clicking from the get go (head recals.) Seagate offered to provide RMA for another exchange. I paid shipping twice and they want me to pay shipping again and try a fourth one. I support 350+ workstations and I've had good past success with Seagate, but this model is poorly designed and of inferior quality. Don't waste your money or your time with this model. Not a reliable device to store your data. Even for "free" is would not be a good deal.

This was so easy to connect and set up. Works fine, and is really quiet. Attractive too. I use it for Time Machine back-ups on my iMac, and it does a great job.

4 of 5 Seagate FreeAgent Pro - 500GB USB 2.0 Monday, June 02, 2008
A Customer from New Orleans, LA
It's hard to give a complete review - I've had this less than a month. Set up was relatively easy for both the USB & Firewire connections. Have not been able to use eSATA-type transfers; cables are not included. However, the eSATA connection is much faster than the 2 other types of connections. Like one other reviewer mentioned having to switch docks for different connections (USB, Firewire, & eSATA) is a downside. It would also be more preferable with a smaller footprint. On the upside, it's a Seagate, it's 7200 RPMs, shipping is free, & it has a 5-year warranty.

5 of 5 Totally satistfied Saturday, May 03, 2008
A Customer from Walnut, CA
I was super sceptical about getting an external/portabele hardrive for all the pictures/videos/music/data on the multiple computers at home but I am glad I took my friend's recommendation and got this one. Its literaly plug and play easy to install and use. took 30 seconds t get started and feels extremely sturdy and durable. Glad I got it and would totally recommend it to anyone who actually cares about quality, durability, style and price.

4 of 5 Quiet & functional despite a few setup issues with Monday, April 28, 2008
Jon L. from Arlington, VA
I bought this drive with the intention of using the FireWire connection with my MacBook. The device comes pre-formatted for a Windows machine, so in order to use it with a Mac, you have to re-format it with included software. The software that Seagate provides refused to work on my machine and kept crashing, so I had to run Disk Utility to manually format it (a much simpler and easier option anyway). Once the drive was formatted, it took a few times powering it off/on for my computer to recognize it, but it finally did. The only other criticism I have besides the setup issues is the power button. It's touch sensitive, which in practice is a cool idea, but it doesn't function as well as it should. Often I'll be holding my finger over the power "button" but nothing will happen. Eventually it will do what it's supposed to, but not without a little effort and frustration first. Other than that, I really like how quiet it is, and the design seems very sturdy and compact. The orange glow coming out of the top and side of the case and through the Seagate logo provide a cool effect. The addition of an eSATA port on the back is nice to have if that's your thing. Bottom line: now that it's up and working just fine, I have no real complaints. It serves its purpose well, offers ample capacity for all of my music and video storage needs, and comes at a fair price. I can't speak for Windows users, but if you are a Mac user, expect a little more work in the beginning to get things running smoothly.

5 of 5 Simple to use; small piece of advice on installati Sunday, April 27, 2008
A Customer from Winter WI
The product is great! It comes packaged very securely and is easy to set-up. I have a Mac and there is always an issue with new hardware being added to the plan! The one sentence that is missing from the directions is, if your Mac isn't recognizing the new drive, "turn off the power to your computer", even go as far as to unplug the whole system after you have made the connection by Firewire or through the Bus port. My Mac recognized the drive immediately after the power was turned off. Minor points are often important. Thanks for this great value.

5 of 5 Easy for a Non-Technical Person to Use Sunday, April 27, 2008
Jerzydeb from The Jerzy Shore
After having one hard drive crash on us overseas and loosing all of our vacation pictures, I bought a thumbdrive. While that was easy enough to store pictures - I thought about what would happen if my main computer at home crashed. All my financials - everything. Thes large capacity storage was just the thing, at the right price, and it was so simple to use. I did read all the reviews about it getting hot - mine didn't. I left it on for a few hours - never even got warm. Love the lights! And it was a very quick and painless process to download all the files I would hate to loose. Thanks for a great product

5 of 5 Great hard drive Saturday, April 26, 2008
A Customer from little rock, AR
Great hard drive. Silent, and cool. Runs fast enough to keep up with video editing on my dual quad mac g5. Only downside is having to change cartridges when I am done with the firewire.

4 of 5 Seagate Freeagent Pro--Its Hot! Monday, February 04, 2008
A Customer from West Union, Iowa
Good quality, fair price per gigabit, FreeAgent Software-fair, eSata speed ++, Ember glow--that's just cool. Downside- having to switch dock for different connections (USB, Firewire, and eSata) and the thing gets HOT even less than 60 minutes of use. I use it to do a complete backup of my new laptop and don't run it much longer than that because it gets so HOT!

5 of 5 Really NICE! drive Tuesday, December 11, 2007
Bob T. from Salt Lake City, Ut.
I have been getting tired of just average drives. This is true Segate quality I remember. Rock solid... (actually heavy), very cool design and one really fun package to open. Really. The entire packaging, manuals and design are very cool. And so is the drive. Days of non-stop backup and restore, video editing, etc. and this drive has not missed a beat or broken a sweat. The extremely nice part is the interface design. A one screw release and you switch out the bottom plate between USB/SATA or dual firewire 400. You will love this drive.

4 of 5 Missing One Critical Accessory Thursday, November 29, 2007
Steffanie from Minneapolis, MN
Now that I have the Free Agent Pro connected to my computer, I am happy with it. I bought this drive instead of any other external drive on the market for the eSATA connection. There are plenty of other external drives on the market with USB and Firewire connections that can be had for a lower price. I wanted a fast connection, so I chose the Free Agent Pro with the awesome eSATA connection. When I received my drive, I immediately went to hook it up to my computer. Oh, wait a minute! No eSATA cable! It came with both a USB and Firewire cable which everyone and their moms already have plenty of. What they didn’t include was what made this drive special; an eSATA connection. I picked one up for a retail price of like $6 so it wouldn’t exactly hurt them to throw one in the box. It isn’t exactly the most common cable yet either so I didn’t just go down to my local electronics store and pick one up. I had to wait a few more days for that part. Now that I have it all hooked up, I am happy, but I think that was a substantial oversight on Seagate’s part. Read and write speeds are great. Transferring files back and forth from my internal drives seems just like it was another internal SATA drive. The only other caveat is with the auto backup. It turns out that it just a 1-month trial version. I tried to remove it as soon as I noticed that they wanted me to pay for it in the future and that turned out to be a bit of a hassle. It took a few tries to uninstall the software, but in the end it all worked out.

5 of 5 Fast Backup, great second drive Saturday, August 11, 2007
funny from NJ
I wish I had researhed better, its an outstanding hard drive. I only use the USB so I could have gotten this drive as USB and saved 70 dollars. USB is super fast you dont need esta or firewire. Save the money and buy this drive as USB only and save a bundle.

5 of 5 Seagate external Hard Drive Tuesday, May 29, 2007
A Customer from brookfield, CT
This hard drive has been great so far. Software was not clearly explained, but once you figure it out, it pretty easy and you don't need to do anything. Just set it up once and it continually back's up your primary computer drive. Great for all skill levels (once it's set up). I would highly recommend this drive.

5 of 5 Works great for me. Saturday, May 26, 2007
A Customer from Portland OR
Works great out of the box, eSata & USB ports on one interface module while firewire on another, can't have both modules connected at same time. Comes with USB & firewire cables but no eSata cable. Does not come with eSata interface card so you have to buy your own if you want it but at least USB straight out of the box. Have only been using it for a few weeks now but moved all my stuff over and is awesome. Cool glow on the drive & logo, too bad I have it in my garage with my server and not in my house at my desktop. Also has an on/off button that is touch vs mechanical - pretty cool. I've left it constantly on and drive is quite quiet and does not get hot. Top rate that I can tell and sure glad has the Seagate 5 yr warranty.
