Product Guides

For the person who needs access to their digital content away from home, at work, or online, while also allowing that same content to be shared in a secure setting, look no further than the Seagate Free Agent Pro Portable Hard Drive. This powerful portable hard drive delivers high-speed transfers, while also giving you the ability to share content with others safely and securely from a remote location or even online.

With up to 1 Terabyte and an ultra-slim design for a clutter-free desktop, your FreeAgent Pro external hard drive helps keep you safe from goof-ups by automatically saving new versions of your content that you can easily access if need be. And should something happen to your PC, you can roll back your Windows operating system, settings, and applications to a point in time when they ran smoother, like before a virus attack. Even though the system settings are taken back in time, updates to photos, music and critical data files are kept current.

The Free Agent Pro is also ideal for those who want quick and painless transfers of their data from their computer to their drive, and from their drive to online accounts (such as Shutterfly or email). Simply plug it in to any power source and connect the USB cable to any computer, and you're ready to go. This hip-looking hard drive takes up less room on your desk than an ordinary stapler--1 x 3 x 5.2 inches (H x D x W)-- giving you more space for your other desktop items. Meanwhile, the hard drive only measures 7.5 x 1.4 x 6.3-inches (H x D x W) and it matches its small base.

The Free Agent Pro data mover automatically duplicates and moves selected content from your hard drive to multiple locations, such as copying your contact lists and emails to your iPod, or photos to a Shutterfly account. This feature also allows you to move your entire 'My Documents' folder to the Free Agent, or move it to your own online space where you (or others you choose) can access it from any browser 24/7. The Free Agent software also offers the feature of rolling back your system to better time if something should happen to your PC while automatic revisions of your content help keep you safe from goof-ups.

Move files or other content with either USB 2.0, eSATA, or FireWire 400 allowing a maximum transfer rate of 480Mb/sec for USB, 3Gb/sec for eSATA, and 400 MB/sec for FireWire 400, while delivering a high performance spindle speed of 7,200 RPM. The unit also comes with a sophisticated touch point power on/off switch.

The Free Agent Pro software and drive formatting works only with Windows, but the drive can easily be reformatted for a Mac with OS X's Disk Utility. This portable hard drive is also compatible with Windows Vista (as well as Windows XP and Windows 2000), allowing you to backup your content regardless of operating system upgrades. A five-year warranty is also included, giving you complete peace of mind. Now with the ability to take your data with you anywhere you go, your digital content finally has room to breathe.

4 of 5 great product Thursday, October 02, 2008
A Customer from fontana, ca

I already had a 500gb seagate drive. Liked it enough to buy the 1tb. I also have a maxtor, however the i think the seagate software is much easier to use. also, i like being able to turn off the external light which I can't figure out how to do on the maxtor. I like the autoback up notification feature. so far the seagate drives have perfromed great.

4 of 5 Good for the money, but one security flaw I found. Tuesday, September 23, 2008
A Customer from Bronx, NY
I picked this brand/model because it was cheap on Buy.com recently ($180 plus tax). Not sure why it went back up. Anyway, I thought I would use this to manually back up my C: drive data. The good news is that it comes with an Autobackup program that does all the work for you. Anytime you create or modify a file, it has the ability to back it up instantly. I am only using the USB 2.0 port but with the Autobackup, I really don't need to copy that fast. Note that the Autobackup may create multiple copies so you can never have enough storage. The backup "plan" that you need to setup can be a bit fustrating at first, but after a few tries, I got it the way I wanted. Note if you are sharing user accounts on the same PC, the drive will get attached as a new drive letter (ex. D:) As a different user, you can browse the D: drive for your backups, so you will need to modify your permissions on the folders. Big security flaw I think. Unless you enable security but then even you can't browse it if you wanted to without restoring.

5 of 5 No problems - easy to use. Tuesday, September 23, 2008
A Customer from Pardeeville, WI
This drive is problem-free. I plugged it in and started storing data. I haven't had an iota of problems with it. It is a great value with lots of storage for a small amount of money. It worked with my Mac right out of the box, which is just the way you want it. I have no hesitation recommending this drive whatsoever.

5 of 5 EXCELLENT... but a CAUTION Friday, September 19, 2008
Ken from Fair Oaks Ranch, TX
Was most interested in the additional storage the drive would give me and I wasn't at all disappointed. But... To get the most from the unit you should make use of the e-sata (SATA II) connection (if you can) but the unit doesn't come with one! Locating the right cable... in my case sata to e-sata ... took a while but BUY.com does sell it... they just give no easy hint as to what and where it is.

5 of 5 I like my purchase Thursday, September 18, 2008
Morpheus from Chicago, IL
It has 3 interfaces, was good value at the time. I find Seagate are most stable drives from my experience. The drive case is metal (it is heavy), I compare to Usb only version (which is plastic and lighter). Electrinics is in the base of the drive the top of the drive stays cool. I use it as NAS with my Asus 2 usb ports router WL500gp (as NTFS formated you get read only functionality). So far stable, always on. You can set auto turn off time via included utility. eSATA connection is different from SATA connector, no cable comes with, could not test the connection so far.

4 of 5 Seagate Freeagent Pro 1TB Monday, September 15, 2008
A Customer from Scottsdale, Arizona
Purchased 1TB Freeagent Pro Drives: One for backup of a Netgear Ready NAS Raid server which had a failing drive; And the second for general backup usage. The drives worked out of the box as advertised. The Ready NAS has only a USB output, and other computers were connected using the 1394 port. I don't have anything with a ESATA connection to try that out. The drives are fast and quiet, but get HOT when transferring 500GB+ of files. One drive shut down due to the temperature. The room is ~80F during the Arizona summer, even with the air conditioning, and it was too much for the drive. The transfers was completed after the drive cooled off, and a fan was set blowing directly on the drive enclosure to dissipate some of the heat. Be careful when transferring LARGE files!

5 of 5 Impressive Ext-HD! Monday, September 15, 2008
mario17cn from Kelso, WA
I was lucky enough to buy this while it was on sale for $169.99 and boy am I ever glad I jumped on that bargain! This drive works great under Vista (I'm running Home Premium), and it starts up and shuts down with the system without me having to turn it off myself. It has 4 ports on it really, USB 2.0, 4-pin and 6-pin Firewire, and an E-SATA connection. Also, what I find really neat about this drive is that in the picture it shows yellow areas along the top and side of the drive, and on the Seagate logo - those are the lights for the drive! It also has a nice power-saving feature that allows it to power down after a set period of time of inactivity. All in all, I'd recommend waiting until this drive goes back on sale, but if you really can't wait to have a Terabyte of HD space for your own, I still don't think you'll be disappointed with it's current price tag. I hope this helps future buyers! Have a great day!

3 of 5 Hmmm... just go SMALL, maybe? Tuesday, August 26, 2008
downloadsandregistrations from Adams, MA
I don't have this 1-Tb drive, but I DO have the 500-gig that I bought from a brick-'n-morter store several months ago. It is working GREAT for me, and is USB only. Seriously, if I had't already paid for two other 1Tb drives from Buy.com, I'd be picking up FOUR or FIVE of the 500-gig FreeAgents. I mean, COME ON... LESS THAN $90 each!!! And I am telling you that the one I have is working great, especially as a shared home-network drive. GET THE SMALLER UNITS, unless you MUST find e-sata or firewire. I hope this helps some of y'all. Oh, I gave a '3' right down the line because I don't want to SKEW the ratings from you that really own it. Michel J. Gaudet

4 of 5 Drive is great Software no so much Monday, August 25, 2008
brijar from Everett, WA
The hard drive it self has performed wonderfully, the back-up software it came with is not so goo, I prefer the software supplied with their Maxtor drives. I have had to complete new back-ups 3 times now because the software fails to recognize the archive. This is the reason I give it a 4 and not a 5. The drive is a GREAT value a terabyte of data for $200 is a hell of a deal. And one note to iicei37 who left a 1 star review, I would not be a bit surprised if you work for Wester Digital since they are headquartered in Lake Forest. As a comparison I also have a MyBook 500mb and I'd take the Seagate over that drive again. Other drives I like include the Maxtor, Iomega or LaCie drives.

5 of 5 Works great writing backups and partials automatic Saturday, August 23, 2008
northernexp from Friday Harbor, WA
Works great automatically backing up initially plus new items as they come up. No owner monitoring necessary. I have not tried the restore mode yet, however. I expect it will work equally well. This product came highly recommended from an established review source.

5 of 5 Another great seagate drive. Sunday, May 25, 2008
Jeremy from West Des Moines, Iowa
5 year warranty - that says it all. I have 3 of these 1TB drives and have used via USB and firewire and they are extremely fast. I have about 5 additional Seagate external drives (their old model) and have yet to have one every fail. The looks is nice and sleek, but I preferred the old design whereas they could be more easily stacked - the inverted "T" design (with a base and slender tower) is the only drawback to me and why I don't give it 5 stars all-around. A great drive for the price! Also, I have never had trouble dismounting a Seagate drive from within windows like many other drives/chipsets.

5 of 5 Excellent Drive Monday, May 12, 2008
dianeoc from Gardnerville, NV
I purchased the 750 gb FreeAgent Pro and have been using it via the eSATA connection for the last 6 months. It's fast, quiet, and easy to set up. The only annoying thing is the message that pops up whenever you hover over the disk's icon, but bottom line it works like a charm with not a problem. I'm buying this 1TB unit next.

1 of 5 eSATA is slower than USB and/or Firewire Thursday, April 10, 2008
A Customer from Foster City, CA
I wasted $ 10 to buy a SATA to eSATA adapter to go from the motherboard to the back of my PC case and another $ 30 for a 6 foot eSATA cable. The transfer rate was horrible. I hooked it up with a USB then a Firewire cable and both are many times faster than the eSATA. So much for the advertised 3Gb/s on eSATA! Support at Seagate said" I don't understand your eSATA cable arrangement.

1 of 5 Returned First Unit within a week Saturday, February 23, 2008
iicei37 from Lake Forest, California
I returned the first unit within a week-spent money to ship it-waited 2 weeks to get a replacement only to discover that Seagate sent me a refurbished one in exchange and as soon as I plugged it in and ran the supplied diagnostics it said the unit was bad and gave me a diagnostic code to supply to Seagate when I return it. Seagate sucks-these external hard drives are TOTAL JUNK-Don't buy any of these. I am done with all Seagate products.

1 of 5 Don't buy this external drive Thursday, February 21, 2008
iicei37 from Lake Forest,California
Seagate says this external drive will transfer in eSATA mode at 3Gbs. Not even close. This thing transfers faster in USB mode most of the time due to a major problem with the eSATA adapter and firmware. This is probably why Seagate doesn't include an eSATA cable in the box. Seagate is aware of the problem but keeps secret a firmware upgrade that if installed properly is said to improve eSATA transfer rates but will smoke the unit in many cases. Also not all eSATA cables will plug in to this unit snugly and the cables that will are hard to find and expensive. My 1TB unit died within 1 week.I'm waiting to see how long the replacement lasts. Very disappointed in Seagate.
