When its time to back up and protect your digital content--photos, music, documents, and more--it doesn't get much easier than the Seagate Free Agent Desktop USB Portable Hard Drive. Simply plug it in to any power source, connect the USB cable to any computer, and you're ready to go. This hip-looking hard drive takes up less room on your desk than an ordinary stapler, giving you more space for your other desktop items.

If you're still relying on your personal computer or back-up CDs or DVDs to store your digital content or vital personal or family documents, you're running an unnecessary risk. Your computer can only hold so many files and can crash at any time, leaving you helpless to access your content. DVDs and CDs have a place in archiving, but they get easily scratched and lost. It's too risky to store everything in your computer, and too time-consuming and cumbersome to have a drawer full of CDs or DVDs.

Computers come and go, but your content should always be nearby. With up to 250 glorious gigabytes, the Free Agent external hard drive is the best place to gather and access all of your important photos, movies, music, games and documents. Simply plug in the power and the USB cable and you’re ready to go.

The Seagate Free Agent is big enough to store a huge portion of your digital content in a safe and secure environment, but small enough to let you take that content with you wherever you go. In other words, having the Seagate Free Agent is like having your entire computer with you at all times, but in a package that's a small fraction of the space and weight of your computer. Designed to live peacefully in your home or office, the Free Agent external hard drive is extra quiet and takes up less room on your desk than a stapler. Even the cable ports are base-mounted to help keep your desk free of clutter. We even add a little bit of sophistication to your desktop with the unique espresso brown finish and molten amber illumination.

The sleek and slim design of this hard drive--only measures 7.5 x 1.6 x 6.4-inches (H x D x W)--and a weight of less than four pounds. The Seagate Free Agent lets you transfer files seamlessly from your computer via its USB 2.0 connection at a brisk transfer rate of up to 480Mb/sec. The drive delivers a spindle speed of 7,200 RPM, giving you the high-speed performance you need to back your data up quickly and safely.

The Seagate Free Agent is ready to use out of the box with a PC, but it can be made Mac-ready in a matter of minutes with Mac OS X's Disk Utility. This portable hard drive is already compatible with Windows Vista (as well as Windows XP and Windows 2000), allowing you to backup your content regardless of operating system upgrades.

At this compact size, and with this high performance, you now have the ability to take your data with you anywhere you go, so your digital content finally has room to breathe. A five-year warranty is also included, giving you complete peace of mind.

3 of 5 Crashed and Burned Friday, November 13, 2009
Bruce from Rosemount, MN

Bought Feb. 2008 and my computer started having trouble seeing it about a year later. Had to keep unplugging it, etc. until Nov. 2009 when it sees only a drive with no files. I own another exact drive and have no problems with it. SAVE YOUR MODEL NUMBER! To return you need model and serial number and model number is NOT on the drive, only s/n. BIG THANK YOU TO BUY.COM FOR HAVING MY PURCHASE HISTORY ON THEIR WEBSITE ALL THE WAY BACK TO FEB 2008 SO I COULD LOOK UP MY MODEL NUMBER TO RETURN IT. 5 YEAR WARRANTY WHICH IS GOOD, THUS MY 3 STAR OVERALL RATING.

5 of 5 So far, so good. Monday, March 02, 2009
Michelle from Cold Spring, NY
I just set it up yesterday. Easy to use, even if you aren't tech savy. I had issues installing it due to my fried USB ports, and the flash troubleshooting walk through was great. I will by another for my office.

1 of 5 Seagate is an absolute sham of a company Monday, December 29, 2008
Chieh-Li Lee from Los Angeles
I've had the pleasure of experiencing the crappy product and dealing with their people first hand. Needless to say I'm never buying another seagate or maxtor product for the rest of my life and I've made it my mission to alert the rest of world of my awful experience with them. I purchased one of their freeagent last november (2007). It broke down in august (2008). I had to ship it back at my own expense. The replacement only worked for 3 months. I had to ship that one back at my own expense as well. They promised to ship me a maxtor in replacement instead. Never happened. They sent me another freeagent. They told me to refuse to accept the product which I did but this caused so much confusion to their warranty division, I'm still without a hard drive as of now (december 28). Needless to say, I'm never buying another seagate or maxtor product for the rest of my life.

5 of 5 Seagate Agent Free Great! Saturday, October 25, 2008
A Customer from Hope, IN
Took it out of the box. Plugged it into the USB and have used it for many months. Recently, unplugged it, plugged it into an MacBook and transfered a bunch of data. It acts like a giant, USB flash drive. Has been plugged in all the time for 6 months with no problems. Bought another one for a MacBook. I think it is great and easy to use.

4 of 5 No Problems Monday, October 20, 2008
DRE from SHREVEPORT, LA
I bought this item about a month ago and it works like a charm. I wasnt sure about saving all of my pics and music on the hard drive, and I ask around and researched different hard drives. I bought this one because of the reviews and it seem that it was a good choice. It runs quiet, you barely notice it if you do not see it, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, IT DID NOT BUST MY POCKET. I plan to get the 1tb for my home recording studio later. "YOU GOT A NEW CUSTOMER"

5 of 5 Excellent!!! Easy Set Up, Works Perfect Monday, October 20, 2008
Larry from Cobb, CA
I couldn't be happier with this drive. Setup was as easy as installing the software and plugging it in. It backs up all my important data automatically at the time I set every night. Make sure you turn off the energy saving feature so it's not asleep when it's supposed to back up. It doesn't seem to know it needs to wake up to do the backup function otherwise. All the positive feedback on this device tell the story very well. Thanks everyone for turning me on to a great product.

1 of 5 Stay away from the Seagate FreeAgent model Monday, October 20, 2008
nicksgsr from Baltimore, Maryland
This is a piece of junk. I initially bought two for dual back-ups. My mistake. The first one failed on initial power-up (bad cheap transformer). The second unit failed in the second week with read errors after transferring 100GB. The replacement failed in the third week - after I had transferred 400 GB. Constant read errors with head recals. Data non-recoverable. Seagate support said they would get back to me - I'm still waiting. So much for offshore support. When they did work they were slow. So the failures cost me a lot of time and now I wouldn't trust them with any important data. Seagate usually makes solid products, but these were junk. Moved to dual WD 500 GB drives. Few dollars more, but no problems.

5 of 5 Amazing Tuesday, September 30, 2008
Susan from Catonsville Maryland
The unit arrived in 2 days from order date. I installed the external hard drive (no previous experience) in about 5 minutes including downloading the software (the directions were extemely simple, direct and concise). I downloaded a TON of digital pics and while it took 200 minutes, it was thousands of fat files. They are easy to access on the external drive. So, I am totally happy with this purchase, it was the cheapest price on the Net, and got here quickly.

5 of 5 like a charm Tuesday, September 30, 2008
A Customer from washington, d.c.
the customer who said you needed to tape the drive to your table or whatnot is whack!!! the base of the drive is very stable...so far i've encountered no problems backing-up my files or accessing them from the drive. no, it does not have an "on/off" switch, but i think that's just people being cry-babies...SO WHAT if it doesn't have a switch??! Is it really that troublesome to disconnect it manually from your USB or outlet? You need help.

3 of 5 Vista Issues Monday, September 29, 2008
Susan from Condon, Montana
Freeagent is Vista compatible IF you download a special windows upgrade packet. This isn't Freeagent's fault, but if you don't download the windows packet none of the devices you plug into your usb port are going to work properly. I'm not a computer person, just a person, so I had to get a technician to figure this out for me (extra expense). The written directions that come with the product are HORRIBLE! Some hard drives have an on off switch, which would be a lot less cumbersome than having to go through a three stage turn off procedure. I really don't know how to tell the darn thing is working other than when I reinsert the plug into the usb port an icon comes on for when I need to disconnect it. Also, the technician pointed out when you have to make a copy before you start working the program, you know the company is expecting it to fail!

5 of 5 Great Hard Drives Monday, September 15, 2008
Keith from GA
I bought 2 of these on sale last week. I've been watching them for some time. I installed one on my main PC as a backup and the included backup software couldn't have been easier to use. I can also backup my laptop through my wireless network. I installed the other one on my High Def Dish Network DVR to increase storage space. With the DVR, I had to disable the snooze mode of the FreeAgent. These drives are incredibly quiet and are working great for both applications.

5 of 5 No problems so far Saturday, September 13, 2008
A Customer from Boulder, CO
500 gigs for 88 bucks (in Summer 2008) is a pretty good deal. I partitioned the drive into two partitions, one as a bootable clone of my iMac, the other for archiving files. A couple weeks in, I can't find anything to complain about. OS X, Windows, and Linux are all happy with the archive partition, and the drive is doing everything I bought it to do. Seems to run pretty cool, though I don't leave it running all the time.

5 of 5 like a charm Friday, September 12, 2008
A Customer from washington dc
i was debating if getting this 500gig external or western digital's. so far it's working like a charm. it has a dim orangish vertical line indicating it's on. no it doesn't have an on/off switch, but i don't find it necessary. and no it doesn't move all over the place...it's quite stable on the base it's attached to. so backup program doesn't have many features, but it's pretty good and straightforward. in any case, u can create a folder inside the drive and save whatever it is u wanna save. for the price and warranty, it is a good deal...also, SeaGate's 1TB is also a good deal...

5 of 5 Seagate Free Agent 500GB External HDD Thursday, August 28, 2008
sunrise from East Hampton, NY
When I upgraded my 1998 Dell Dimension XPS D300 with two 120GB HDDs, new power supply, new motherboard with Athlon dual core processor and a dual layer dvd RW drive, the hard drives I chose were Seagate's because of their unquestioned reliability. Adding Seagate's Free Agent 500GB External HDD as a backup to both internal drives put the icing on the cake. The Free Agent is sleek in design and defrags with out a hitch to increase its speed. Purchasing Seagate's Free Agent 500GB External HDD was a no-brainer!

5 of 5 Great product for a great price! Wednesday, August 27, 2008
Raj Sarma from NY
This hard drive was a steal with the mail in rebate and I really like using it with my new iMac. The drive comes pre-formatted as an NTFS volume so it will need to be re-formatted in case you plan to use it as a backup drive for your Mac. This drive is extremely quiet and it sleeps and wakes up with your computer which is a really nice feature to save energy. I use it for my time machine backup and so far it has been working flawlessly. Additionally, I chose this over the WD My Book because this drive has a 5 year warranty as opposed to My Book's paltry one year warranty. Additionally, the drive has a very nice light in the front face which is very subtle and not in your face, this light "glows" during disk activity and isn't obtrusive even in a dark room.

5 of 5 Better than WD Wednesday, August 27, 2008
A Customer from Blaine, MN
I bought a Western Digital MyBook a few months ago and had problems from the start. This time I decided to purchase a Seagate hard drive because they are a MN based company and I like to keep money in my economy. I am pleased with the purchase so far (Only had it a few weeks). Set-up is easy and seems to transfer files faster than my old Western Digital. FYI: My Western Digital hard drive stopped working for no apparent reason, they replaced it and a week later that one stopped working. Got tired of spending money on a shoddy product.

4 of 5 good buy Tuesday, August 26, 2008
A Customer from Edison, NJ
I started using it from the day I got it shipped. This is my second Seagate product. I use it to backup my files in Windows Xp as well as my Suse machine.Works great with Suse Linux. Only constraint is, I cannot unmount the device directly from linux machine. I need to shutdowm my Linux m/c to stop the External Drive. Overall I would rate it is best in it's class as would recommend it to anyone.

5 of 5 Simple and Effective Tuesday, August 26, 2008
Buzzman from Columbus, OH
This drive is a breeze to use. Really worked as a plug-and-play item on my XP system. The backup software is easy to use. It's also very quiet. Only thing I don't like is the form factor, which doesn't support stacking.

4 of 5 Solid Dirve Tuesday, August 26, 2008
A Customer from Pa
This drive was a breeze to set up and get up and running. Seagate is known as the top Hard Drive Maunfactuer in the business. Very quite and barely visible in its vertical stand. Great value for under $100. The Software needs some improvement though. For what ever reason, the software does not see my home network, just the local machine that it is connected to. I since went on line and picked up some free back up software that does the trick.

5 of 5 Excellent Drive Has a few quarks Friday, August 22, 2008
A Customer from Pennsylvania
This drive is formatted NTFS which is a good thing. The NTFS permissions are set a bit abnormal. A file copied from one XP machine was not accessible on a different machine without tweaking the permissions on the folder it was saved in. The autoinstall feature of the backup software is a bit annoying, it pops up everytime I plug the drive in. I do not wish to use this software at the current time, but it trys to install anyway. Overall I like it and worst case I will backup the software and reformat NTFS if I cannot correct the NTFS permission issues I am experiencing.

2 of 5 No Good Tuesday, August 19, 2008
tanika from Philadelphia, pa
I have used it 3 times to back up files. It was unplugged for a while. I went to use it again to back up new pictures and video and it won't even show up on the computer. All of my files were backed up to this and now I can not retrieve any of my vacation pictures, videos and files. I don't know what to do. I even tried the trouble shooting suggested from the website with no results

5 of 5 quality product with free, speedy delivery Wednesday, August 13, 2008
Gregg from Waukesha, WI
No need to talk too much about a name-brand drive that has a 5 year warranty, and yet sells at a low cost. I will mention two unique features of this drive that may not be apparent: 1. It has no ON/OFF switch. But the drive is designed so that it really isn't needed. When you plug in the AC adapter to the wall and then to the drive, the the drive remains OFF. Only after you connect each end of the USB cable does the drive fire up. The included software will automatically put the drive to sleep after a user-specified period of time. 2. The drive stays cool. It appears to include lower and upper vents to allow natural convection. This may explain why the drive is packaged in a vertical position on a base. Oh, and thanks to Buy.com...the FREE SHIPPING got this unit to me IN LESS THAN 24 HOURS after ordering. Wow - who else does this?

5 of 5 Always reliable Wednesday, August 13, 2008
Rob from Pico Rivera, CA
I am a computer consultant and only use Seagate hard drives when I need 3.5" internal or external hard drives. I have seen many of the other manufacturers fail (both OEM and retail), but rarely do I see Seagates fail (and when I do it's usually after years of service).

5 of 5 Simple and easy Wednesday, July 16, 2008
cer from Pittsburgh, PA
To start off with I bought this from Buy.com at a good price. It arrived very quickly (as usual for Buy.com). It was a replacement for another external hard drive that had gone on the fritz after two years and was beyond the warrantee. In reading various reviews on other external hard drives there were several recommendations for buying a Seagate product which gives a 5 year warrantee. The start up was a breeze -- so easy that I hardly remember what I had to do. Everything seems to be functioning well. I am very satisfied and recommend going with a Seagate if you need an external hard drive.
