As people more used to comparing magnitudes in decimal base10 system, capacities of storage devices (hard drives, usb sticks, sd cards etc.) are marketed as 1 KB =(10^3)=1000(decimal) bytes rather than (2^10)=1024(binary) bytes. Its simpler to think of K=Thousand,M=Million,G=Billion,T=Trillion but this is only a progressively lower than actual estimate. So, 1.5 TB(decimal)= 1.5(*10^3^4) bytes =1.36TB(binary)=1.36*(2^10^4) bytes Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 What happened to the black cases? Monday, May 11, 2009 Jim Simon from Lenzburg, IL
This is my 2nd Seagate 1tb or greater external drive. So far so good, although I prefered the black cases with the cool yellow lights.... I back up all my DVD's directly to these drives, no problems... Backup and play my music from them too...
Can't beat the price and warranty... These are smaller than my old Calvary drives... Was this review helpful?

I have no complaints at all about the great product and great price. My only complaint regards the cheap-out packaging. The hard drive came in a large enough box, but there was only a poor excuse for packaging materials to keep it secure and stable in its box.
It is good you did not follow the herd and use the not-green styro packaging peanuts; kudos for that. Problem is, you only used a short length of brown paper; not enough to amount to good packaging.
So, a word to the wise. The box was dented and damaged on arrival...but the drive, itself, was well boxed from the factory, and thus was unharmed.
I agree with the reviewer who said don't use the encryption unless you need it on all files. It takes forever!
Overall great product, great price. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Buy.com Thursday, April 23, 2009 Johnny 5 from Ohio
I purchase a Seagate FreeAgent Desktop 1.5TB USB External Hard Drive off of buy.com and Received an email shortly after words. In the next 12 hours the item was pulled and shipped. I check the Fed EX tracking on it and it arrived at my door when expected. When I received it I was very happy with the box and packaging. I am using the Hard Drive today and had no problems with it. The only down side is 1.5 TB turns into 1.36 TB. I am very happy with the process over all. I feel very confident in saying "I would recremend anyone to purchase this off of buy.com" Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 Small and grindy! Thursday, April 23, 2009 A Customer from minneapolis, mn
Even though the capacity is large, the physical size is smaller than my old seagate external. I like the light on the fron that throbs when the drive is in use. Reminds me of old scifi flicks. One thing I dislike is the grindy noise that occasionally comes from the drive. It still works fine, though. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Nice quality-low in engery useage Thursday, April 16, 2009 TKT from San Jose CA
I'm pretty happy with this external drive. the main thing I like is that it's pretty quiet, no internal fans to make noise. Also the drive spins down when it's not in use. The white glowing led light is a nice touch. You can sit it vertical or horizontal, I choose the horizontal. don't trust myself tipping it over. that would be disastrous.
This drive comes preformatted in NTFS. So for us Mac users, you'll have to reformatted or buy the software which lets mac write to NTFS partitions. The case seems to snap together- no screws. I prefer having screws so I can replace it in the future if needed. No biggie. Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 Great product Monday, March 16, 2009 HTD from Albuquerque, NM
I've used this external hard drive for almost two weeks and have had no problems with it. It actually looks nicer in real life and functions well. It's very quiet when it's working and the transfer rate is fast, unless you are doing an encrypted backup then that takes a really long time. Unless you want to encrypt all the files you have, I would suggest not using the encrypted backup option because it takes forever to encrypt and decrypt a file. I didn't know this when I first used the external hard drive but learned soon afterward. :)
Also, I have not found the option where you can set up a password hint as mentioned in the manual. I'm not sure if that's a problem pertaining solely to this unit or if it's this product line. It's not a big deal to me, though, and that's the only thing that's given me any problems so you can see there's not much to worry about.
Overall I would suggest buying this product because it's a really good deal for the size and price of the hard drive. I was skeptical about the brand of the product and was going to buy a Western Digital external hard drive but I have to say that I'm very much impressed by this product so far. This drive is super quiet......I have it right next to me and it doesn't make a sound. Great drive for the price. I am completely happy and bought a second drive for future use. I did not install the software that is on the drive and it works fine. BE WARNED: the 1.5 TB turns into 1.36 TB. I wish it used less than 140 GBS..that's a lot of storage to lose. 5 of 5 Well worth the price! Wednesday, February 25, 2009 Happy Customer from Kaplan, LA
I reviewed previous comments before I bought it and decided to not install the manager software that came with it and it is working fine as drop-n-drag. I am very pleased with this purchase. Was this review helpful?

I have had this external drive for almost a month now and am very happy with it. It runs quietly and reliably and is very easy to set up. It has a nice design that fits in well with my computer set up.

5 of 5 Love it! Thursday, January 29, 2009 A Customer from Montrose, CO
This hard drive works great, was easy set up, and the auto back-up software is very easy. It was so painless to set up regular back-ups at a reasonable cost that I was wondering why I waited so long to do this! Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Great drive Monday, December 22, 2008 A Customer from Long Beach, CA
Received the drive three days after ordering it. Plugged it in and it worked flawlessly. It is smaller than I expected, quite a bit smaller than other external drives I have. It is sleek and elegant. So far so good! Was this review helpful?

Historically, family members and I have bought 4 400gb and 2 1TB Seagate HD's. Now I just bought this 1.5TB for myself to back up my pictures, music and data in 2 separate locations for safety. I've never had any problem in 4 years with the 400gb HD's, and love these new larger HD's. They just keep getting better and the 5 year warranty bodes well in my mind! Was this review helpful?

Unstable. If you want it to be available when you want it, then it is a not a good deal. You can get it to respond with some effort for back up. But it may fail you when you actually need it after starting your computer. Western Digital (My Book) never fails to respond to boots, always powers or shuts off during power up/down. This one, well it fails to respond at times and actually wants you to reformat, losing your data - don't do it! Just reboot the computer and hope you get it to respond. Was this review helpful?
