5 of 5 Not a perfect match for the 8300HD Tuesday, September 25, 2007 A Customer from Milwaukee, WI
The drive works well with my computers. However, I bought it to extend my recording time on the 8300HD and that can be problematic. Certainly not the fault of the drive but the Time Warner based 8300HD. When the drive is plugged into 8300HD, the cable TV picture freezes for several seconds. When the drive is off, the 8300HD works perfectly. I thought this info would be valuable for those thinking of using this external with a 8300HD.

my friends don't have eSATA PCI cards, so I can't connect my hard drive to their PCs. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Great except for Vista--for now Monday, July 30, 2007 John White from Islip NY
My 300G drive is terrific--compact, attractive, reliable. One word of caution. When my XP motherboard fried (cooling fan stopped working) and I replaced it, the new machine only came with Vista Home Premium. One of my many Vista complaints is that Seagate's [included and super-nice] Bounceback software as installed on the XP board doesn't work with Vista. The Bounceback people were nice enough to email a promise that they would let me know when their Vista version becomes available (and I will happily pay for it!). Meanwhile, I am stuck with Vista's clumsy and partly-hidden backup of Drive C onto this Seagate external. Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 Best in its class Sunday, July 01, 2007 Marcus from Queens, NY
A very robust, quiet, visually-appealing, space-saving, high performance, nicely-priced product. I have had mine for over 5 months and I'm impressed and satisfied with it overall.
A small con about the Seagate product is that the hard drive spin-up takes a bit longer than some other drives I've worked with, which could result in a brief pause in your system during spin-up if your system is idle and the drive goes into some kind of sleep/inactivity mode. 5 of 5 so far so good Wednesday, June 27, 2007 A Customer from california
i use this for doing DV video editing in Final Cut Pro on a
Mac G5 running OS X 10.4.10. so far, it's performing without a
hick up. speed is good. no dropped frames. good response.
the large capacity is also a plus. i opted for the 500GB
version(vs the 300GB one) cuz it's a bit better value. and
when doing video, you might run into a situation where you just
need that extra space.
the main reason i got this is because of the eSATA interface.
for video editing, this is the best way to go. you can get by
with USB 2.0 or 1394a/b, but using eSATA keeps things simple,
cuz SATA is the native i/o protocol of most drives these days,
so there's no conversion; you won't have the problems that the
extra layer in the i/o stack could pose, from having the USB/1394
integration.
this particular model has *only* eSATA - no supplemental USB
or 1394 interfaces as many others have. this keeps the price
down. the price here is a good bargain.
installation was easy. it just worked right away. i didn't
use the provided eSATA PCI host adapter, though, because i
already had a Wiebetech TC-PCI-4S adapter. so i don't know
how well the provided card works.
another note in video editing in general. you don't want to
fuss with poor performing drives. working on a project, it's
a major pain to have to fight dropped frames or poor playback
reliability. getting the right storage is critical. so far,
this drive has fit the bill.

5 of 5 Best external drive ever! Tuesday, June 26, 2007 Andrew from Frederick,MD
I had the FreeAgent Pro from Seagate and what a piece of crap. This drive is so much better. I am now able to backup 30 GB in less than 10 minutes. Some of my old USB drives would take hours. The FreeAgent Pro was ok but the design would over heat if you are backing up large amounts of data. This Seagate drive comes with PCI card which can be installed if you dont have ESata on the backup of your machine. I used the PCI card and it is great. The drive is almost silent but it does have small fans but it better than overheating. Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 Works Great with SA8300HD! Friday, June 22, 2007 A Customer from SD, CA
I used the Seagate 500GD eSATA external hard drive to connect to my Scientific Atlanta 8300HD Passport (Ver 2.6.002 TWC SD) to extend my recording time. Installation was very easy! It runs alittle hot, so place it in a well ventilated area. If you plan to place it flat, it is a good idea to have a mouse pad to insulate the noise. I've used it for a under a month now and haven't had any performance issues. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Fast & Quiet Wednesday, June 20, 2007 WSZsr from Round Rock, Tx
I needed an external eSata hard drive to increase the capacity of my SA 8300HD DVR. I tried the Western Digital but it was not recognized by the DVR. The Seagate was recognized immediately and is very quiet.
Highly recommended! Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 great drive - own 2 Monday, June 04, 2007 Hb861 from New York, NY
I use the 300GB eSata drive as an add-on for my Explorer 8300HD PVR from Comcast - just plug and play and reboot the explorer and voila you have an additional 25 hours of HD recordings!
I use the 500GB as a backup drive for important data - the enclosed eSata pci card works great and is easy to install under Win XP (will try Vista shortly). Transfer rates are close to my internal drive Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Great value!! Thursday, May 31, 2007 Matthew from Johnstown, PA
I purchased this external HDD for $148.99 with free shipping, excellent deal!! I purchased it to used as additional storage for our Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300HD DVR and it works perfectly. The best part is, it comes with an eSATA-eSATA cable AND a PCI SATA card to be used in a desktop computer if so desired. The unit looks nice, silver and black blends in with the bulk of our A/V equipment. Small footprint, very quiet, doesn't get very warm, but I do have it in a well ventilated area. Recommended. 5 of 5 Quiet and Fast Tuesday, May 29, 2007 A Customer from Atlanta, GA
I was looking for an additional drive to store video. This drive is fast enough with the eSata interface to capture video to directly which I don't think would work with a USB interface. It is absolutely silent and seems to run without giving off much heat. I haven't used the software since I don't use it for backups. So far I've been very pleased with it's performance. 4 of 5 Faster than USB or Firewire Sunday, May 27, 2007 Bob_H2O from Huntington Beach, CA.
Already own a Seagate 300 USB/Firewire external drive, needed to add additional storage for everyday use. Went with new Seagate eSATA 500 drive. What a difference, easy to install, very fast transfer rates, and no delays in startup of drive when idle or inital use of drive. Great price, fast drive, and easy to install.
