In 1977, the Canadian-produced SCTV began as a 30-minute, edgy sketch comedy show born out of the Second City theatres. The show ran in syndication in the U.S. for several years. In 1981, it was picked up by NBC and moved to a 90-minute format. It ran for two years on NBC and was seen by millions of viewers each week. This first SCTV box set covers the first nine (Cycle 1 as it was referred to in Canada) 90-minute episodes and includes tons of special features.
 Editor's Note
An edgier version of SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE, the Canadian sketch comedy series SCTV premiered in 1977 and ran for three seasons in a half-hour format before being picked up by NBC and expanded to 90 minutes in 1981. Unusual for a sketch comedy series, SCTV's skits were tied together by the framing device of a fictional television network populated by feuding newscasters, dishonest talk show hosts, failed cabaret singers, fishing musicians, and other eccentric show biz types. In between were sketches of biting contemporary satire delivered by an inspired cast of future stars: Joe Flaherty, Eugene Levy, Andrea Martin, Rick Moranis, Catherine O'Hara, Dave Thomas, and the late-great John Candy. This collection includes the first nine 90-minute episodes from SCTV's first season on NBC, featuring classic skits such as "The Great White North," "Play It Again Bob," "Polynesiantown," "Indira," and more.
