In the third installment of the Swishahouse Records compilation series, DJ Michael "5000" Watts brings together a thick line-up of Dirty South rhyme-sayers including Paul Wall, Archie Lee, Cootabang, Z-Ro, Willie D, Trouble, and Scarface. The most dominant voice on the album has to be Screwed Click mainstay Lil Keke, though, who appears on nearly every track and tears them down, Houston-style.
Swishahouse may be the label where Paul Wall, Mike Jones, Slim Thug, and Chamillionaire were developed, but they're also the kings of screwed and chopped and have released numerous bootleg mixtapes, most of the helmed by the man in charge here, DJ Michael "5000" Watts. No matter how many times the Swishahouse brand showed up in Wall and Jones' videos, the screwed and chopped remixes -- bootlegs and legit -- have always been what the fans remember, even if "Still Tippin'" -- the Mike Jones smash hit that's responsible for the Asylum/Swishahouse relationship -- showed up originally on The Day Hell Broke Loose, Vol. 2. While Volume 3 of Watts' not screwed, not chopped series lacks a potential smash hit like "Still Tippin'," it is better built than most compilations, and for fans of that dirty Houston sound, it's a necessary acquisition. After the intro -- with Watts letting a massive belch out during his usual "hit us up at the website" spiel -- the comp comes on strong with "Swervin'," a cold-rolling banger featuring Lil' Keke, Archie Lee, and Coota Bang. From here it's hypnotic thugging with Dipset guest Juelz Santana ("On What We On"), Webbie with one of his best performances yet ("How Hustler's Do It"), and the legendary Scarface reworking his Geto Boys hit "Damn It Feels Good to Be a Gangsta" ("Gangsta"). Misplaced in the relentless first half, the fair and soft Paul Wall track "So Fly" muddles up the hard flow and would be better next to Z-Ro's poignant "Truth Be Told," which introduces the album's chilled-out fourth quarter. It helps if you're a Lil' Keke fan since he's all over the album, and while this gutter release might not be for everyone, The Day Hell Broke Loose, Vol. 3 epitomizes the hard-grinding sound of Swishahouse and proves they have a lot to offer past tripped-out bootlegs. ~ David Jeffries
