How exactly could such as astoundingly well-crafted and adventurous vision like The Science of Sleep end up the throwaway curiosity that it is? To be sure, there's no lack of effort from writer/director Michel Gondry, ringleader of this particular reality-blurring carnival, who brings to bear all of his singular skills at drawing dreamscapes disturbingly close to the frame of our everyday lives. Gliding airily past the occasional narrative rough patch, Michel Gondry's The Science of Sleep is a beguiling romantic fantasy of extravagant imagination and whimsical good humor. The director/co-writer of the Oscar-winning Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) brings a childlike sense of playfulness to this loosely autobiographical collage of animation and live action starring the wonderful Gael Garcia Bernal (The Motorcycle Diaries) as Gondry's cinematic alter ego. Playing an introverted eccentric shuffling back and forth between his real and waking lives, the gifted and supernaturally handsome young Mexican actor holds The Science of Sleep together, even as it becomes increasingly clear that Gondry is more visual stylist than storyteller. - Tim Knight

No doubt highly personal and yet as effervescent as sparkling water, this fanciful dive into the imaginative world of an insecure young man, and his haphazard attempts to establish a connection with a female neighbor...Technically, the film is immaculate in an intimate, precious way.
