In 1906, Sheriff John LeBrun encounters Arthur Conan Doyle and a near-impossible murder at London's Sceptred Isle Club Sheriff John LeBrun of Jekyl Island, Georgia, travels to England to visit a friend, who introduces LeBrun to the "men's club"--hundreds of which exist in London--where men of certain specialized interests meet, often wielding great power behind closed doors. In the company of his new acquaintance, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Le Brun visits the Sceptred Isle Club, where they hear a number of muffled shots. A quick investigation reveals that several prominent men have been murdered in the normally locked gambling room--with no survivors and no sign of the culprit. Rubbing elbows with the famous and the infamous of the time, LeBrun faces a senseless murder and an impossible puzzle.
