 Editor's Note
No spoof is left unturned in director and parody-meister David Zucker's SCARY MOVIE 4, the latest installment in the popular horror-cum-humor series. Among several returnees from previous films, Anna Faris reprises her role as Cindy Campbell, the eternally unlucky and hilariously clumsy heroine. In a send-up of 2004's THE GRUDGE, Campbell is assigned as full-time nurse to a mysterious old lady in a house haunted by the ghost of a small boy. In a takeoff of 2005's WAR OF THE WORLDS, next door lives Tom Ryan (Craig Bierko), a divorced dock worker somewhat in charge of his two kids, who is called into action as Alien TriPods (remove the "Tr" for a hint at the inspiration for their invention) seek to destroy Earth. The two meet and quickly fall in love. Joined by Cindy's ever-present sidekick, the flirtatious Brenda Meeks (Regina Hall), the protagonists must save the planet from aliens and solve the mystery of the ghostly boy. One of the stops along the way includes a sharp lampooning of THE VILLAGE, complete with appearances from SCARY MOVIE veterans Carmen Electra and Chris Elliot, and other cinematic spoofs, including BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN, MILLION DOLLAR BABY, and SAW. The satirical wit extends beyond the movies, containing personal jabs both self-inflicted (Charlie Sheen, Shaquille O'Neal, and Dr. Phil) and not (Mike Tyson, Michael Jackson, and George W. Bush). Ultimately, there is more than enough funniness to sate the SCARY MOVIE or slapstick comedy fan's appetite.

 | Scary Movie 4 - DVD By: Matt Paprocki - Blogcritics.org Reviews Published on: 3/20/2007 2:09 PM | You know, if you stop going to see these movies, they'll stop making them. Please? At best, the Scary Movie franchise can be labeled “weak.” Originally directed by the Wayans brothers, the series has shifted into the arms of spoof master David Zucker (Airplane!). This is hardly his finest moment.
As a parody, this fourth entry is enjoyable. Focusing on War of the Worlds, The Grudge, The Village, and finally Saw, the top sci-fi/horror films of the past few years are covered....read the full review |

| | Professional Reviews | Variety 7 of 10 "The even numbers don't favor the ""Scary Movie"" franchise. Inspiration ran dry for the Wayans Brothers in No. 2; now successors David Zucker & Co suffer gag fatigue following up their moderately improving efforts on the third installment. ""Scary Movie 4"" finds horror parody overshadowed by ho-hum groin blows, C-list celebrity cameos, slapstick child abuse, soon-to-be-forgotten hip-hop personalities, plus scatalogical and gay jokes; real laughs are few...Minus the closing credit crawl, and an epilogue sending up Tom Cruise's Katie-lovin' wigout on ""Oprah,"" ""4"" would scarcely nudge 75 minutes. Which is still about 70 minutes longer than it warrants. If Faris and Hall's comic chops are barely exercised here, time is still on their side; one hopes someday they'll get the stellar lead roles they deserve." - Dennis Harvey ReelViews 6 of 10 "Scary Movie 4 is better than Scary Movie 3. Writing that sentence falls into the category of damning with faint praise, because the experience of sitting through the third installment of the comedy series was as pleasant as spreading organic fertilizer on the hottest day of the summer. The sense of desperation that pervaded Scary Movie 3 is gone, and there are enough laughs in Scary Movie 4 to keep most viewers distracted for a majority of its skinny 80-minute running time. But, to go with the good, there's plenty of bad, and it comes in the form of countless gags that misfire, far too much flatulence and urine, and (God help us) a buck naked Leslie Nielsen. Admittedly, that scene certainly puts the ""scary"" in Scary Movie 4...It's a far cry from the hilarious, edgy antics of Scary Movie, but it has about as much going for it as the first sequel. It's a cash cow for its distributors (Dimension and Miramax), and doesn't have to make much at the box office to be a bona fide success. The quality is strictly direct-to-video, but that won't stop kids from flocking to see it. (The series received a ratings downgrade from R to PG-13 with Scary Movie 3.) It's okay for a few cheap laughs, but better suited for late-night cable viewing than even a matinee ticket purchase. If you decide to sit this one out, never fear - I am reasonably certain there will soon be a Scary Movie 5. There are some things that won't die, and this series is one of them." - James Berardinelli
